ALLTEL - LG LX5450 Users

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Alltel LG LX5450 users seem to comprise the "redheaded stepchild orphans" of the LG Cell Phone Community.

No free games or applications to install to play with (except what you "rent" to use on your phone from ALLTEL). No easy way to get at our camera phone graphics. No easy way to get Ringtones or Custom graphics onto our phones (yeah - the beach scenes are nice .... but I want to see my OWN family's beach pictures, my OWN girlfriend in her bikini and not some grinning goblin-child in a snorkel mask everytime I start my phone!).

Since the ALLTEL LX5450s seem to have labotomized by ALLTEL and the only version of BITPM that works seems to be the Special Edition 0.62 that was enhanced to work with the VX6000 ..... I decided to start this discussion thread aimed at ALLTEL LX540 users specifically to share information. Thank you ALLTEL for sucking the fun out of our phones ....

My first warning to new LG LX5450 users - although the official LG data cable for the LX5450 works fine - the LG PC SYNC software is junk. You can't download your photos with it - you can just work with your phone-address book and calendar. No background or ringtone customization. Why? Because Alltel wants you to *pay* to get your photos (via emailing them to you), ringtones, and backgrounds. The LG PC SYNC software, which couldn't find an LG phone connected to your computer if it used 2 hands and a roadmap, is pretty much worthless. Use the specialized BITPM 0.62 that goozie11 tweaked to work with the LG VX6000 instead of the LG PC SYNC official software. I have found that the official untweaked BITPM 0.62 version all the way up to 0.7.15 simply do not work with the ALLTEL versions of the LX5450. If someone has found out a way to make 0.7.15 work with the ALLTEL LX5450s .... please post.

I've been using the .7 releases of bitpim up to .7.17 with no problems at all on my Alltel 5450. I followed setup instructions from on this board.

You are right, the software that comes with the phone is ××××××××. I was able to make the BitPim program work, with a little bit of effort. Here are the steps I took:

Step 1) Install the drivers on the PC Link CD, install the software too, it doesn't matter. Reboot if needed.

Step 2) Install the latest development version of BitPim. Make sure any old version is completely uninstalled first, you may have to remove the BitPim directory from "Program Files" manually first.

Step 3) Run BitPim, under the settings make sure the port is on "auto", have no fear, it detects almost instantly, unlink the stupid bundled software.

Step 4) Make sure your phone is plugged in. Go to "Get Data", if it fails to auto-detect your phone simply unplug the USB and re-plug it in, try again - it should work now.

Step 5) You can get pictures from your phone by getting wallpaper, you can find some interesting things using the File Browser (still havent figured it all out yet, just got the phone yesterday).

So the lesson is don't be afraid to reboot, keep the port on auto, make sure BitPim is completely uninstalled before re-installing, and unplug and replug the USB if BitPim fails auto detect.

On a side note, I found a setting in the phone to increase your baud rate, the manual says it should be good for USB and should make transfering those pictures a lot faster.

Some things I am still working on:

a) Finding and uploading free (or hacked?) BREW apps to the phone. If anyone knows how AXCESS works please let me know.

b) Can I use Java apps on the phone? Is there an intermediate BREW app that can run the Java apps? TagTag.com has lots of free java apps.

c) MP3s? There is only 50mb+ on the phone, but might be nice to have some better ringtones.

-----------------
NOTE

Bitpim is much better than "PC Link", but still has limitations:

a) when uploading music it doesn't recognize mp3s as a valid format, I have yet trying to upload one using the file browser.

b) When adding a Wallpaper it automatically converts JPEGs to BMPs, make sure if you use this method to rescale and crop the images (to 120x131?) using an editor like Photoshop. The quality will be much better, I am using the shroom pic from digital blasphemy as my wallpaper and it looks great.

Posted too soon - that last link is awesome, I will try it when I get home and report back on how the apps upload goes.

Yes. A lot of posts. Not much information. Mainly people who don't know how to use BitPM and third party data cables.

I did get the latest version of BitPM to work without much problem on my own.

As far as Java games on your Alltel for free - just not going to happen folks. Alltel's version of the 5450 has been customized, the apps have to have their AXCESS security wrapper on them. Either buy or do without. What a ripoff - but that's Alltel for you.

At this point the 5450 is very old technology. So I guess it's time for us to move on to the new technology and tell Alltel "thanks" for screwing up what would have been a pretty decent phone.
