how to wipe all data?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,
I recently migrated from my 7280 to an IPAq 4355...
I need to wipe all data from the 7280 and can't din otu how. I have tried to search here or even on www.blackberry.com to no avail. The reset I perform seems to be a soft reset which only reboots the machine.
Anyone?
Thanks,
Nick

Also means find out how - before having breakfast!

Sorry to see you go. Be sure to charge your iPaq several times a day

Easiest way to wipe out a BlackBerry: set a password on the 7280 - go into Options / Security.

Enter the password incorrectly 10 times. Twice the BB will ask you to type the word "blackberry" to make sure you really want to do this. After the 10th time, all cusotmer data will be erased.

Actually no need to charge the IPAQ as much as you suggested - it is the 4355 and runs on a 1600 mAH and can go 3-4 days of hard usage with a strong backlight setting/bluetooth and wifi useage and still be ok. But thanks for the tip!

If I do this password thing - will it give the new owner trouble when they take the unit over and want to begin using it?

Well, good luck anyway Keep the charger handy

The new owner should have no problem at all. All of the system software remains untouched - just the customer data is wiped out.

Thanks NJ - it worked fine:-)

Don't know why you keep on about the charging... this is one IPAQ with a great battery life. I have had several other IPAQ's and reurned the last two due to poor battery life.
Are you familiar with the 43XX series? It has a nice keyboard - as nice as the BB's IMO, bluetooth and wifi, and the battery as I have said is tremendous.
Anhow - thanks again!

I gave up on iPaqs a while ago; we've standardized on the BlackBerry. I'll probably pick one up just to play with it. Thanks for the comments - I'll check on out.

There is a RIM utility called "Programmer" that will wipe a handheld. I think you need to get it directly from RIM, but if you really want it, I have a copy...

Thanks for the offer. I did what NJ suggested and it worked fine so I don't really have a need for it since I'll be selling it in a couple of days.
Thanks though:-)

Careful - Programmer only works with the C++ devices (800 and 900 series). You need a different program called Javaloader if you want to wipe out the entire contents of the J2ME (phone) BlackBerrys.

And the password deal is the quickest way to wipe out customer data. Programmer/Javaloader is great if you want to wipe out everything on the BB.

Thanks for the heads up, I did not know that, as I have never had to wipe a java device...

I own both an iPaq, and a Blackberry. Blackberry gets about 85% use with the iPaq for remaining 15%. I have the model 4155, the one without keyboard. Its battery life is better than the average iPaq (even with smaller battery than yours). The iPaq is better for multimedia stuff like digital photos and movies, but the Blackberry can't be beat yet for always-on wireless Internet.

The iPaq and Blackberry are pretty different tools, with some amount of overlap.

Hi there,

i have a 7510 and it is only showing 5 MB left of sapce. I don't know what is taking up all that space. Will the reset trick fix that for me? Thanks!

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

That 5MB of free space is about right. Resetting it (NOT DELETING ANYTHING) will free up some space, but as you load programs (browser, apps) it will eat it up. That 5MB is right.

Another method:

Options -> Security -> Thumbwheel click -> Wipe Handheld

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

That appears to be a new feature; in a completely non scientific study, I found that on some newer BlackBerrys, but not on some older ones. Again, not a scientific study and I haven't had time to determine a pattern.

Good catch!

Can you send me a copy of the rim programmer so i can wipe my blackberry? my email is grc1014@hotmail.com

Alwasy been my favorite and alot faster!

Mark Rejhon - the other method Options -> Security -> Thumbwheel click -> Wipe Handheld - doesn't show up under options > security
on a 7280.

Cingular told me the password thing would mess with the sim card. I need to give this blackberry to someone else in our office and would really really like to wipe it

Best to use javaloader.exe -usb wipe

I've done the password thing before w/ a Rogers sim card in a BlackBerry and another time w/ a Cingular sim card in the BlackBerry and my sim cards were always fine afterwards. Entering the wrong password until the handheld wipes itself shouldn't affect the sim card at all.

Synncere is correct and the Cingular rep. you spoke to was wrong (big surprise there, eh)?
