Would you buy a car from a RICE show?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: rip

Would you guys buy a car that's been done up from a car show, let say to use as a daily drive especially in winters?

i.e this one person did a 91 Supra that he bought scrap for $5000cdn then resold for ~$11,000 after a show...he gets his parts from Japan refurb of course...he has a 96 Civic that's going to have a Prelude engine in it...his father owns a car parts dealership so with his dad and his sponsers he practically doesn't front any money other than the shell itself. Sorry i wish i had pics
but would you guys consider something like that?...i think that's a good deal for a shell that's been built back up especially if it's in show form?!

Well would or wouldn't you?

i'm going to go on your expert opinions...thanks.

I personally wouldnt. I'm ust not into rice cars AND i would like to buy the car for $5k and then put my own 6k in mods on it.

My dad's leasing company is connected with their motoring company and they do styling and mods and what not.. so i could also get parts at cost ..

maybe when i get my BMW

I would never buy a car that you know has had mods on it. You don't know what this person has been doing to this car nor do you know the quality of the mods that have taken place over the stock ones.

Just a rule of thumb, when buying used you should look for stock and find a car that you would think has not been abused.

On this case how do you know you are not going to be buying a car that has been raced around and beat to the ground. For all you know you could be buying a new motor next month. I'm not saying that any used car will be bad and I am not saying that used show cars are going to be bad but if you are looking to buy a used car your best bet is to look else where. If you don't want problems keep your eye in the direction of older people that seem to maintenance their car on a regular basis. Otherwise you could end up buying something worse than an old Hyundai.

I am going out on a limb but I think most votes will be "no" on your question.

Posted by: JwY

i agree with skylinepilot
i'd get it stock as possible

Posted by: Nokarola

I would say no, the car has been modified for the previous owners driving habits.

Posted by: WoNGsTeR

like skylinepilot says.. no..

it will save you headaches later on... if your getting used try to get it all stock....

if its just minor changes like spoiler or rims and stuff thats no prob.. but if he's done engine mods and other performance then.. not a good idea...

Posted by: sneakerpimp

hell no. are you kidding me? riced out cars are worth less than stock. plus half of the time they're trailer 8itches anyhow. the only "modified" car i would by is JDM one.

your friend with the prelude motor in a 96 civic is making a big mistake. he's going to have to fabricate his own mounts for the bay plus his car WILL be front-heavy. H-series into EF/EG/EK is one of the most NON-recommended swaps.

I've read your post a few times and I still find the way you worded it very confusing.

Did you at any point in your post describe the car you are interested in purchasing? Or were you all stating other examples? In which case, it seems like you are just wasting everyone's time.

There are those rare times when purchasing a modified vehicle at a low price would be worth while, but you would have to clearly explain to us the details inorder for us to give you a more qualified opinion about it. But at the present moment, your post does not seem to make much sense.

thank you mawti always helpful..you're still angry at me for that "fat joke?" which you said you were:rolleyes2

btw thanks for the answers so far guys...he apparently gets his engines from Japan, refubs of course and he's been doing it for awhile now...his dad owns Japan Imports, i don't know if this qualifies him as an expert? i'll try and get a pic(s) of a finished product later in the year or when he's done and provide full specs on which ever car he has finished.

^ What ever do you mean? Sorry, I'm having trouble understanding you again, rip. Actually, it may be my fault. My very limit brain power may not have been sufficeint to understand the words you write correctly.

Can any memeber OTHER THAN RIP, please explain/list the details of the specific car he is intrested in purchasing from his initial post?

I just want to see if my reading comprehension skills are really that bad. Come on, help me out mates. This is a good chance to make mawti look stupid. I'll even start you off:

"mawti you idiot, rip clearly describes the details/conditions of the specific car he is intersted in purchasing when he says ______________________"

Posted by: [bisheadking]

I wouldn't, it doesn't matter what it looks like on the outside, it's what's on the inside that counts, right rip?

In his original post it seems like he is looking to get a civic with a Prelude swap (I am not sure the relevance of him mentioning a supra, I guess he was just showing the guy has sold cars before).

When I first read through it I admit it was a bit hard to understand, I didn't see him list anything specific on characteristics of the car other than the fact it is going to be a modded vehicle with a motor swap. Nowhere does he mention a price, appearance of body or interior (although that may be modified as well), mileage on the rebuilt engine or anything specific you would want to know in making a deal. So if you are looking for specifics, he didn't mention them and that would be his loss... I would say don't worry about it.

When I responded, I honestly just skimmed his post and it seemed plain enough that he's just asking if he should even bother with car that has been to shows and is modified. Thats the basic idea I got and I gave him back my basic idea on buying cars and staying away from ANY used cars that are modded.

So, Rip: If I am not mistaken by the quote above, I think Mawti wants a little more info so he can help. I didn't see specific details as well, so please list what you can. It's a '96 civic correct? Hatchback? Coupe? Sedan? How much are they going to sell it to you? What mods are exactly on the car? I know the motors rebuilt but are there any details you can give? What other information do you have? Again, Mawti is just trying to help... just tell us what you got to work with.

Mawti, I differ from you... I have little regard for the facts you seek and draw the same conclusion I already have, I would say "no" to a modified car. Obviously there can be different circumstances, but we'll just have to wait and see what rip has to say.

Have fun guys

Yes, that was my question, the rest were basic examples of his past works and to qualify his general skills. I have never bought a used car, so i kept my question very "general".

And just so I can hear it exactly from you: There is no exact car you have in mind, correct?

If you do have a car in mind (either now or later), please describe.

Yes rip. If you have a specific car you want us to give our 'expert opinion' on, please first help us out by describing the details of it more clearly. If not, stop wasting our time.

Agreed, see, when people think about "sponsors" they tend to forget just how expensive modding is. Even w/ sponsors, before you win a show, you have to shell out cash to get the car done up nicely. And, you have to be worth the effort, i.e., paid for some mods solely by yourself.

What that means of course, if that folks will go the cheapest mod route and then just paint eveything, or shine it up to cover it up. Even w/ engine swaps, depending on the cars, you might have to swap trannies, ecus, etc. It is not just a drop in thing. And, if you do not know much about that, you can easily be fooled by bad frankenstein jobs.

I would buy a car that is as stock as possible. Even changing rims has a signifcant effect.

The furtherest I would go is tint, but even then, folks go the cheapo route.

karib, I wouldn't even bother trying to write a knowledgeable reponse for this thread. It's obviously a loaded question. Just look at the thread title. "Would you buy a car from a RICE show?"
If someone was serious about purchasing a car, they obviously wounldn't use a derogatory term such as "rice" to describe it. (And this person has already admitted there not even being any actual car he is interested in purchasing).

It is akin to asking "Would you enjoy being VISCIOUSLY raped?" Using the word "RICE" shows this peson can already anticipated what everyone's natural response to his question would be--so why did this person bother to even ask it?

That is the question I do not have the answer to. Perhaps he was trying to impress us all by sharing about his "connections" to an 'import tuner' of some sort. Perhaps he was trying to act all 'with the car scene' by using words as such as "rice" to demean said import cars. Perhaps he is a person just seeking attention. I really do not know.

The point is, this thread is a huge waste of time, written by some moron who is a huge waste of space himself. I know this shite may be tolerated in The Lounge, but it surely isn't tolerated here in the Car Forum. So Mr. Chen, please just get the fxxx out of this forum if you are going to post rubbish like this again.

I was thinking the same thing. When first reading the title and not opening the thread I might assume that this might be some sort of topic on a person/people getting ripped off when buying a car from a "RICE show." After reading the the first post I felt comfortable assuming that Rip thought about buying a show car but decided that might not be such a good idea and just wanted are reassurance to point himself away from that direction. But I completely agree with how you put it (including your rape example), the thread title alone sounds a bit demeaning to import shows so I don't think Rip was too interested in purchasing an import show car anyways.
