Bluetooth adapters

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: WapHappy

So far i have tried the AmbiCom bluetooth dongle.

i have the com ports all set up and SPP (serial port protocol) devices are paired and are visible with AmbiCom's bluetooth Neighborhood.

using it with PC suite, the mRouter and nokia connection manager still says: "Media Type is not Supported.."

I'm using WinXP SP1 with all the patches and updates. Same as Ambicom software.

Please list your USB bluetooth that have worked for you.

thanks!

Centrios Bluetooth USB Adapter

got it from radioshack

got it to work with my 3650 using xp

Posted by: snoboardin

i use d-link dbt-120 .. works great for me. never had a problem!

Posted by: WapHappy

thanks for the comments. i forgot to add if you have gotten them to work with PC suite AND WinXP AND Nokia 6600?

and if its not too much to ask what your procedure was to get pc suite to finally see the n6600. Frankly, i've tried everything.

been searching and reading all the forums in regards to bluetooth connectivity problems with pc suite/n6600. nothing concrete

Posted by: snoboardin

it works with windows xp and my n-gage .. not the 6600 though..

Posted by: ducey

I'm using a TDK USB bluetooth dongle with windows XP and a nokia 6600

Posted by: Dutchman

I use the Belkin and Win XP Pro. The Belkin is a popular choice that can be picked up at your local CompUSA.

Posted by: WapHappy

Thanks, i'll look for either the TDK or belkin when i'm near a compusa or bestbuy.

lets keep this thread going so it may benefit others with a list of "known" adapters that have worked.

Posted by: xgambit

i have an epox one thats worked with win2000 and xp, using a t68m, t68i, t616, s56, 3650, n-gage, and 2 ipaq models.

Posted by: TDBearCT

I'm using the Trendware USB dongle, comes with the latest Widcomm drivers and works great. It's also $17 after rebates up to the end of the year.

I had a Belkin (Tecom) version 1, it died on me unexpectedly a few weeks ago.

Posted by: sonic_cd

msi bt usb adapter works with 7650,6600 and n-gage...
pc suite that works:
7650/3650
n-gage
6600 unknown

I'm using a class 1 Bluetooth Dongle from X-micro for my Nokia 6600

website here:
http://www.x-micro.com/donglec1.htm

Works perfectly with the Nokia PC Suite and it's cheap too!

Here is info from Peppe's website on "Everything Bluetooth." this is mostly aimed at PPC's, but is does have step by step guide for installing the desktop stuff and links for the best drivers.

http://home.comcast.net/~spam-target/

I currently recommend anyone buying a bluetooth dongle try to get a Belkin F8T001 Version 2, or any other class 1 (100m range) dongle that comes with or has updates to Widcomm 1.4.x.x drivers.

The driver version that most companies support and that ships with most dongles is 1.2.2.16. There is a 1.3.2.7 Stack that is much simpler to use, it adds support for network bridging, which can be used instead of ICS if you have windows XP, and will allow someone to not have to move their router in order to get bluetooth network access working.
I highly recommend you download a 1.3.2.7 driver from the section on the right, "Download 1.3.2.7." If your device is not listed try a few 1.3.2.7 drivers one will typically work. The 1.3.2.7 driver will uninstall the old driver through a wizard follow the directions and it should go smoothly.

The setup i currently use: Encore BT3030 dongle (not the one currently on their site, but actually a tecom Bt3030). 1.3.2.7 drivers from bluewireless. Windows XP Pro. Wired connection to a netgear wired Router connected to a cable modem. I have the wired connection bridged to the bluetooth connection.

Tman, YOU ARE THE MAN!!

i tossed out the ambicom junk installed and tried the Widcomm software and drivers. (setting a restore point of course)

it works!! after some fidgiting with settings and serial com ports, PC suite came about and connected to the paired device.

many thanks.

you can add "Ambicom USB dongle" to the list. as it works but only with the widcomm software.

I've been reading this thread and just ordered a Belkin F8T001 Version 2 from Amazon. Seems like it will do everything and uses the latest drivers. Hopefully it will work well with the Nokia 3650.

I would have picked one up in town but we no longer have a CompUSA, Gateway Country or any computer store for that matter. They all left!

I've used a DBT-120 from DLink and had good luck.

Best and most painless was DEFINATLY using the Logitech Bluetooth Mouse and Bluetooth Hub. They sent it to me a week ago and it's been reliable as all get out, and their software is fantastic.

Plus, to pair a new device, you just press a button and it walks you through the whole process. In addition, Logitech provides fantastic documentation and support -- and they know what PC Suite is and how to set it up!

Rock!

Posted by: Darla

I just got a PenBlue USB Dongle. I had the Belkin before but when I first got it they did not have the drivers to support the 3650 so I got rid of it.

Posted by: eywleung

I just got a DLink DBT-120 today, works the first time I connect, plus it's on sale for CDN$39. I am extremely happy with it!

Posted by: potatoho

I have an HTQ-BD01 dongle and it "works" on this Windows XP notebook, but it sure is flaky. Seems that I have to reinstall the driver nearly every time I plug it in, because it doesn't detect it properly. Once it gets going, it works fine. I think maybe my dongle is not 100%.

That sounds great, but their web site suggests it won't work with the 6600 and PC Suite:

But the .pdf file seems to say it does. Now to wait until the price settles down a bit!

The same dongle only works in one direction for me, PC-to-phone and that's perfect. However, phone-to-PC results in Unable to connect messages. The setup is the same, 6600, XP, Widcomm 1.3.2.7. Did you have any similar problems while installing it that you could overcome?

I can confirm the phone to PC connection errors. I'm currently using the same driver version on Windows XP SP1 (and SP2 MS Official BETA).... However I don't know if it's the X-micro BT dongle or the Nokia 6600, or perhaps Windows XP that has problems connecting from phone to PC.. I just utilize the pc suite when transferring a file from the phone to my PC... Honestly I have yet to find out how to successfully use the Bluetooth Exchange Folder....

I already know the BT connection problems prior to my buying the dongle - but not specifically to the X-micro dongle because I just took my chances on getting this x-micro dongle. As long as the PC-phone works I'm ok with that... of course I'm hoping that

Since I was already aware of the problems that may arise installing a BT dongle on a Windows XP machine and the Nokia PC Suite for 6600, I just made sure that I followed the instructions provided in the forum and was successful during the initial installation...

Posted by: neomorphin

I have a pen blue, and it works kinda. I can connect to my n-gage, but pc suite never recognizes the phone. I can transfer images using the bluetooth network folder, but really want to use pc suite. Any ideas?

I try to avoid PC suite as much as I can, it's a real pain in the neck. I don't even have it installed on my desktop machine, only on the notebook where I used infrared before buying the Bluetooth dongle. In addition to being slow and clumsy, I also often have problems with it not connecting to the phone after the notebook hibernated or slept, a system reboot is often required. To move files between the phone and the PC, I prefer plain built-in infrared over PC Suite any time but Bluetooth would be better.

Posted by: Moderator HF 4

Post your Bluetooth (BT) adapter models. Links to downloading updated sw (obviously no warez) and related support pages and other info.

The idea is to create a master list of BT adapters that appear to work well or which ones DON'T! But let's try to keep it on the positive with ones that DO work for the most part.

Posted by: Moderator HF 4

I'll start it off with

PenBlue by Mavintec

Ebay is a good place to start. I regularly see them available for $20 or less shipped.

This adapter works well with XP SP2 and the m-Router by Intuwave to manage that connection (does what My Bluetooth Places did previously.

Posted by: newtechfreak

3Com USB bluetooth adapter....found one on ebay for less than $30 plus shipping.

Works perfectly with its own drivers and software, but no support with Win XP and no PC Suite- mrouter recognises it, but the PC Suite refuses to. Dont know why.
Now with SP2 it works occasionally with the PC Suite.

Posted by: SpiralSlash

I've got a real gem of a BT adapter - a noname adapter called the "Blue USB wireless connector". It's model number is Y-210. I can't find any mention of the manufacturer, and the mini CD the drivers are included on has drivers for at least 10 other devices and no identification which is which.

The adapter uses drivers from Windigo Systems, and I haven't been able to get mRouter or the PC Suite to recognize it. Only XTNDConnect Blue Manager, the program that came with it, can transfer files back and forth.

I'd recommend staying away from this adapter.

Posted by: Blazers4ever

I use a Linksys USB BT adapter (model USBBT100). It retails for $49.99 and works great pairing PC Suite with Nokia bluetooth phones. Includes software and auto-installing drivers.

Posted by: Malaco0219

Billington Bluetooth Adapter, mini version, works great, but never could link well with p800, as i never got it to send things from my computer to my p800. Works perfectly with my 3650, didnt try my 6600 yet.

A extended version with an antenna is also available, providing mroe range, and can be found on their website.

Posted by: angel_wing0

^ i post here to agree with marco...actually tried it with my 6600, it works fine too

Posted by: Cirtess

I'm using a Belkin F8T001 adapter. Works wonderfully w/ its own software/driver. No probs connecting to pc suite. Overall a great product.

Posted by: TriBand81

Using a Konnect BT Adapter running with WIDCOMM drivers. Got it free with my Plantronics BT M3000 for 79 pounds when I still lived in London.

Works great, can hardly wait to see how it interacts with XP SP2.

MSI Pc2Pc Bluetooth Transceiving Key

Got it for about US$ 20 from a computer shop. Had no trouble installing and using it on winxp sp1. Was able to install it on win 98se, but was unable to get it recognized by Nokia PC suite.

So not recommended if u have win98se, but highly recommended for winxp.

Posted by: friedbrains

yup, MSI works like a charm for 6600 (and 6230 as well)

Posted by: newtechfreak

Can someone post about which BT adapters work with the N6600 and the PC Suite....? Pls include that in your posts, it would help people like me decide abt which BT adapter to get next

Posted by: GadgetVirtuoso

I have got the Pen Blue and liked it enough to buy another for another PC. Been using it with three phones at our house without any real problems and it was even easier with SP2 and m-Router (not the Nokia one) thanks to Mod HF4's suggestion there. We've been using it with a 3600, two 3650s and a T68i.

Posted by: BoB-O Wireless

It would be nice to know which adapters work automagically with XPSP2 *and* work well with 6600/3650 PCSuite.

Posted by: Trekker

the one i posted works great with Nokia PC suite. Am downloading SP2 right now, will update if find any issues

Posted by: sanyo4900

I got a Belkin BT USB Adaptor F8T030 and it works great. But recently I DL'ed PC Suite and it wouldnt work. So I DL'ed the new service pack 2 and it seems too work but when i try to import my contacts it crashs. other than that i sent my images and sound clips too my phone

*edit btw this is for my Nokia 6600

Posted by: nivw

ZUB6100 (100 meter version)
connects fine to my 6600 using m-router 3.0.
I use the supplied widcomm cd drivers, on win 2000.

I use a D-Link DBT-120 on my Power Mac G4...Running OS X 10.3.5 with iSync 1.5, I have NO problems, and I can sync anything, including all the new celly's (Nokia 6620). I bought it for $45 the first time and I let my brother's have it (Nokia 3600 and Nokia 3620). I bought another one for me @ $30. Waiting for it now

Posted by: Doctor OJ

Got the Belkin F8T001 using Nokia 6620

Installed the software and it works like a charm, I believe it is one of the adapters with the longest range, box says 100 meters, but I get about 20 meters through 3 walls. Since I have not tried one of the other 10 meter devices I don't know if it really does make it work at a greater range or if the phone is limited by the 10 meter standard. Maybe somebody could shed some light on that.

Have tried it on varies PCs. Without SP2 it needs the software installed first and works great with instant file transfer to "bluetooth exchange folders" in My Documents. On PC's running SP2 it recognizes the device plug and play, does not even need to install the software drivers. However in this case it does not allow instant transfer of files with the SP2 bluetooth interface you have to click on receive files on the pc before you can send it from the phone.

Nokia pc suite works great with it, just remember that if you intalled PC suite before you got your bluetooth device, than you have to reinstall it, so it can recognize the drivers.

I Had first bought the Iomega bluetooth but I returned it hoping this one was completely plug and play on XP sp1, so I could just take it with me and use it on any pc without installing drivers but I guess none of them are that compatible, and I was really satisfied with the range and small size of this one. So unless someone points out one that is completely plug and play and needs no drivers, and is still compatible with nokia pc suite, than please let me know.

TDK BT users with SP2 here is help...

Posted by: lakshyt

what do ya'll think bout this BT adapter...i can get it for a pretty cheap price... $30 CDN...

http://www.byteccusa.com/product/network/BT-301U%20.htm

as opposed to anything else thats branded which is almost double the price of this with less features... like the D-Link DBT-120 which is $60 and only 10 meters in range!

Posted by: GadgetVirtuoso

The range of the adapter only matter if you're going to connect it with other devices with the same range. BT phones only have a range of 10m, so anything else the BT adapter is capable of won't matter when connecting to your phone.

Posted by: lakshyt

aite...but what do u think of the cheap bluetooth adapter...its onlt $30 CDN..i like the price very much!

Don't know anything about that one. I've got two PenBlue's that work well at our house.

Posted by: nemik

i have the cheapest most generic dongle i could find on ebay 2 years ago. microtune (never heard of it), but it uses the WIDCOMM drivers. it works like a charm.

guys, unless you're looking for super range, don't look at brand names, just get the cheapest that you can or a design you like. they're all the same.
i prefer WIDCOMM based ones though over anything else.

Posted by: friedbrains

^ 2nd that, widcomm is cool, a lot better than that shi*ty Microsoft BT on SP2...

Posted by: lakshyt

i just bought a generic bluetooth adapter 2 days ago for 30 bucks... working pretty good... i installed SP2 cuz i hard it supported bluetooth better...and it did..i am using the SP2 drivers... which i think are okay...better than the software and ×××× that came on the cd..i think

btw... whats widcomm?

widcomm is a company that provides BT driver, 1 of the best BT driver, much better than SP2... if u r just after transfering files with ur BT then the SP2 will suffice, however if u want ot use Nokia PC Suite and if you have BT headset and u want to use it too with ur PC, then SP2 will not be enough...

Widcomm either comes with your adapter or it doesn't. If you don't have Widcomm software with your device it probably doesn't you can't use it, because the device itself also has a signature that the software on the PC reads to see if it's allowed to use it or not. To complicate it Widcomm SW from one company won't work either another Widcomm release from another company.

id like to add, each BT has a built-in hardware address, like the MAC address in the NIC, widcomm will look into this, and the software must support it... widcomm is very particular with their sw license...

Posted by: drwoo123

can anyone point me to a walkthrough explaining how to connect BT on 6600 to a PC. I installed, and it usually takes a bit of playing around for them to connect.

I have a TRENDware TBW-101UB Bluetooth USB Adapter.

link

like i said they eventually connect - but it takes fiddling and somehow just happens - what im looking for is a stepwise approach rather than waiting for them to discover each other.

thanks in advance.

if its been asked - my apologies - i searched but couldnt find.

Posted by: DeLoReAnMcLaReN

I use a Belkin F8T003... before I installed Windows XP SP2, I had SP1, and the adaptor's software worked like pure hell! It would constantly freeze, go non-respondant, and magically afterwards disappear from the taskbar! Belkin told me to call Nokia after I had called them, I was mad at them for telling me that besides the fact that they only had bluetooth support for the Nokia 3650 (????). Once I installed SP2, I reinstalled the adaptor's drivers and they started working under Microsoft's program- it works very stable now and I actually trust it to work. I just wish microsoft had OBEX initialization from the computer, and not just "receive a file".

Greetings all, first post here.

I was contemplating on buying the Logitech MX900 bluetooth keyboard+mouse combo with its native bluetooth dongle included into the mouse charger.

Now I recently bought a Nokia N-Gage QD (which rocks ) and was wondering if anyone knew if the two devices answered well to one another?

I don't have a bluetooth dongle on my pc so far and since I wanted to change my keyboard and mouse, I thought this could be a good combo idea.

Anyone got toughts on it or saw reviews on that topic?

Thanks guys,

-The Blue Baron

BTW: Is the Logitech MX900 a Widcomm compliant device??

Posted by: 80085

i purchased this BT USB dongle from ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...me=STRK:MEWN:IT

just received it today, and i had issues installing the software. it's WIDCOMM software, version 1.4.3 build 4. i've got SP2, and the dongle works fine as just plug and play. but after reading this, sounds like the WIDCOMM drivers are some of the best out there.

here's where my problem is. during installation, my taskbar disappears. then it finishes, and it's like my explorer and desktop aren't functional. my desktop shortcuts are all gone, my taskbar is still missing. i can't even logoff without hitting control+alt+delete. so after doing that, and signing back in, everything looks fine again. now there's a "my bluetooth places" icon on my desktop, but it goes nowhere. it's supposed to open up with a windows explorer type interface, it shows pics in the install booklet.

anyone encounter this yet?

my device doesnt come with widcomm drivers.i am able to transfer files using nokia pc suite but i doesnt seem to be able to connect using remote S60.does this mean that i need to get another device or the remote S60 not supported with 7610?

oh remote S60 is the symbian application by mobileways. it can allow you to control your hp from your pc. try it!

has anyone tried it on a 7610? i cant seem to be able to use it

Posted by: friedbrains

ah, OK, maybe you should check if there is already a software upgrade for the remote s60 and also u need to find out which BT profile it uses for connection since if you are not using widcom driver and if you are using SP2 BT drivers, be aware that SP2 does not have OBEX

Posted by: MikeDirnt78

hey friedbrains. thanks for the replies. what is the obex used for? can you tell examples when is obex needed?

Thanks.

You have to follow the instructions for installing the drivers for XP SP2 precisely (posted on dlink.com)

Hey guys. This is my first post here. I have a bluetooth question that a few of you touched on.

I currently have a 6600. Before I installed XP Service pack 2, I had no problems with my bluetooth. Now that SP2 is installed, I can't connect to my PC with my phone. I must go to the PC, tell it to "receive a file", then send a file. from my phone. (I used to be able to just send files, and it would automatically allow me to connect and send.) This allows me to send only one file at a time, which is a huge pain. I used to be able to "Mark all" files, then, send to -> bluetooth. This would transfer all files. I have set up the partnership and everything.

Also, I now have 2 bluetooth icons in my systray. I believe that one is the windows bluetooth icon, and the other is my bluetooth software's icon, the bluetooth unit i use is by linksys.

I notice you guys mentioned PC suite. Is this an application that could possibly remedy this? Is there a specific set of drivers to install? I currently have the drivers installed that came on CD, as well as some type of driver that Sp2 provided. I wish I could get back the ability to send multiple files with one click from my phone. Thats what I love about it. I really don't want to get an MMC card reader. I love leaving the card in the phone, and transferring files.

Any help you can provide is much appreciated!

The two BT icons indicate that you have two drivers installed and they are probably conflicting with each other. You should only have one BT icon in the System Tray.
In Device Manager you also should see only one device.
Visit the BT Adapter's manufacturer's Web Sit and download specific drivers for XP SP2 and follow the installation instructions precisely.
I got my DLink BT120 to work with XP SP2 and Nokia PC Suite after following the instructions exactly.
Nokia PC Suite has some very nice features - you can also back up all data on the phone and its memory card.

Thanks for the info. I downloaded PC Suite and this did the trick. Everything works, and its much easier to use.

You were correct, PC Suite gave me the option of selecting one bluetooth driver. Once I selected the correct one, it worked. 2 simultaneously were causing a conflict.

I purchased the d-link. nokia tech support said that d-link and belkin are compatible with pcsuite. although i mentioned that i have windows xp and that if hotkey2 was installed, i might have a problem.

I have Billionton Bluetooth Adapter 100m.
Why you should buy this Bluetooth Device.

1)It rocks man it works rockingly on my PC on WIN2000.WIth Nokia PC Suite it connects flawlessly.

1)It is tough man.I haved dropped this adapter 10 to 12 times then also it works flawlessly.

2)Range is also good.Effectively cover my house in its range. In open air i dont know but in the room it have been effectively covered the range of 20-30 through two walls (Depend how much power in the Phone is left and Model)

3)And the Main question what will be th eprice of this Product it currently its cost around Rs.1200 Means 20 Bucks

I liked its profile means when you are connected to the Net by Phone(Now i am connected). You can transfer file from Phone to PC or PC to Phone using
Nokia PC Suite.

i've got a belkin bt adapter and has worked with every bt phone that i've used.

whenever i select and send multiple files at once, it works with my desktop pc [winxp pro sp1] but if i use my adapter with any other pc or laptop, i can only send one file at a time. i have paired and set as authorized in all cases but will only work on my desktop. quite strange.

Posted by: angel_wing0

i dont think they are not needed anymore nowadays...since more new laptops have bt now

I use something call "Blue Soleil" bt dongle. It was 5 shipped. Its from a site in hong kong but reliable nonetheless. Speed was a bit slower then the USB DK2 cable.

friedbrains,

I just bought yesterday, the MSI BToes 2.0 EDR gongle and I haven't had a problem installing it on my laptop. One must read the instruction file that came with the software fully because it have many features to offer.

Posted by: friedbrains

^ thanks for all the advice, but i just dont have the time now to work on this...

for some reason as well, my bt drivers are not listed on the "Add/Remove Programs" of the Control Panel, which could have been easier, hence i cant just remvoe them that easy, i think i have to goto the registry...

but then i think i have already replaced my widcomm drivers with the latest windows bt stack, which by the way is working great (i was very surprised), anyways i still have my old MSI BToes with BT 1.1 and it still works great, its just that it wont support multiple connection (reason why i want to replace it)

Posted by: angel_wing0

used the BT on my LG T1...works great

Posted by: friedbrains

Ok, many of you have probably see or has this BT dongle

Now some of you have probably bought this because it has an "Antenna" which means better coverage compared to those dongles that don not have an antenna. Well we have been had, because what looks like an "Antenna" is not an antenna at all. See the picture below, when I opened the dongle.

That thing which looks like a piece of spaghetti is the "inside" antenna, and is the only antenna of this BT dongle. It does not connect to the "outside" antenna, and that so called antenna is just a piece of plastic.
