makeindex questions

I just have a couple makeindex questions to be sure I don't mess up my phone.

I've been using bitpim to overwrite images and ringers that I downloaded free from telus. Now, I would like to try makeindex.

Say I want to upload an image named superman.png:
I save download_img.txt from my phone, run "makeindex -h 8900 -i superman.png", and I'll get a new file named download_img.txt which is a NEW file.
Do I just overwrite the download_img.txt file on my phone with this NEW file, without renaming it? or should i just remove the .new extension?

So download_snd.txt is for ringers, download_img.txt is for wallpapers, but what about download_img2.txt?

Thanks for your time.

Remove .new and overwrite the existing one on your phone

Whats the procedure for adding multiple images to download_img.txt with makeindex?

Not sure... I'd make a new index file for the first image, and then remove the .new and use that as the starting point for the next one and then keep going and going...

That is the correct procedure. I wrote the application this way so you always have the original file to revert to in case you messed something up.

But in that case how does the index file end up containing multiple images if its being overwritten each time?

?

Alright... maybe it's the stress at work getting to me today, but I'm going to be a bit contrite answering this question.

Can you think of a scenario that would allow you to successfully add the next index to the new file? Lets think about this for no more than 30 seconds...

Makeindex takes download_snd.txt as an input file. It uses this file to create a file called download_snd.txt.new in order to preserve the input file incase the end user does something stupid and has to restore the initial file. Now, it's not rocket science to figure out what to do at this point. You must rename, or delete the original download_snd.txt and then rename the file that makeindex created for you to download_snd.txt .

It's a simple process, however, it forces the end user to think about what they are doing, and it also makes it very difficult for them to blame me if their handset gets screwed up, because if the backup gets destroyed or lost, it's their own fault.

Appreciate your help. I seem to have overlooked the fact it uses the input file.

Honestly guys, I've always just added images to my phone (brew/shared/images), rebooted and the download_img.txt would always rebuild its self. I do this with my 8900 and my girl friends 8600 and it works every time. You have to reboot though or your new images will not show up. Beware though, DO NOT do this with ring tones. The download_snd.txt WILL NOT rebuild its self and you will lock your self out of your user/sound/ringer dir.

Oops, sorry. I didn't mean to post this twice.

The Telus version of the 8900 does not have the brew directory structure. Furthermore, some of the operation is significantly different. The biggest difference that comes to mind is that it's a J2ME handset, as opposed to a BREW handset.

With all of the computer minded people, and I am sure some with programing expertise that browse this forum, why can't someone come up with a way to do away with the d**n Brew and install Java and then we could just download wallpaper and ringtones off of the net like I used to do with my Nokia.

I had to change because Cingular does not have coverage in my area and I didn't know what I was getting into with Brew.
