I am trying to get a Nokia 5190 to work with my activated Cingualr sim that works fine in my Motorola t720. Phone is supposedly unlocked? When I insert my sim the phone gives no error but won't show any signal strength (ie) no bars. When I dial a number it takes a few seconds and then says no network available. Cingular reps give conflicting information. One says phone broke. Other rep says nokia 5190 will not work with cingular network? I am in 1900 mz area. zip 72703. Thanks

I used a 5190 in a 1900 Mz area (CA) Sounds like it's broken. If you want to pick up another older Nokia a 3390 would be comparable.

Sorry for not adding anything really usefull, but...

I currently use a 5190 here in CA. Works great, as it has for over 2 years. It's my first phone, and I'll use it until the day I die or the day it dies, whichever comes first.

... Or until Cingular decides to change the control channels to 850Mhz, which may or may not happen after the merger with AT&T.

Yeah...that's my biggest concern; I can't seem to get a definate answer. IIRC, I read somewhere that T-Mobile will be taking over 1900Mhz licenses here in CA. If that's true, then I will have to get a new phone. At least this won't be happening overnight.

why are you sure you are in a 1900 area? According to Wireless Advisor, Cingular has licenses for both 800 and 1900 in your area. Therefore, they might only be using GSM on 800 - or 800 control channels, as others have stated. Just get a 850/1900 phone.

Thanks for the tips.. Erub is correct... I am in 850mhz area.. not 1900. Anyone need a refurbished 5190 ??

Oh, Cingular, why won't you enable 1900mhz control channels?

This is why the snazzy unlocked T-Mobile phones won't work in a lot of markets, unfortunately, mine included.

I have a 5190 and I pay $21.95 a month for 100 mins. They sent all the warnings, and then the threats of lost service. I still get good service and although it says I roam on every call I dont pay for roaming. It seems to be a tic on my account that says "Legacy" account. Got it in '97. They tried but I challanged and in Bellsouth, (the name on the bottom of my 5190), cingular, at&t, SBC, PACBELL, or whatever name there was or is, they still put ethics first,,, you just gotta let them know you care.

This is a huge thread "bump" from 2004.

Well the Nokia 5190 will not work with any of the 64K SIM or newer ones due to its memory allocation.

The same goes for the Nokia 6190 and non-EONS Nokia 1100.

So if you have a 32K SIM or older then yes, you'd be fine using that 1900Mhz only 5190. Just don't plan on thinking you can still use it if you have a 64K or newer SIM card.
