Fijbert's P910i Review: Ten is a magical number

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: fijbert

Well, it's finally here!! I cant believe it.. all this hype..
I didnt go to the bathrooms waiting for the Delivery guy to get to the door... he even said I was overly excited for receiving a package.. I was like "this isnt just a package.. it's a package of dreams.. this is the P910!!"
guy was like "this kid is cracked out" but I didnt care.. I had my beloved P910i
I opened the DHL bag and what do I see? a Nokia Bag

seems that my sister has a sense of humour.. she wanted to scare me
so I slip the box out and to my surprise, I see the beautiful SE NOT Type Approved Sticker:

the box includes the usual
the manual:

2 CDs:

PC Suite, and Applications:
the applications present are as follows:

Adobe® Photoshop® Album software
AppForge Booster®.NET
AvantGo®
DateMate 2004
Handy Day 2004
Handy Expense
HP Runestone
iGo QuickPoint
IM+
Media Viewer
MetrO
Mobipocket Reader
Opera 6.0 for Sony Ericsson
Photo Editor
Promyzer
SplashID
SplashPhoto
Wayfinder Mobile Navigator™
WorldMate Professional

and finally: the rest of the stuff...

So, the million dollar question (or in this case, 10$) is: is this phone worth upgrading to?
If you are a P900 user.. no
otherwise, yeah!

the only difference that is visible is the obvious keypad, the colors r much nicer, and the extra space which is very nice

the box comes just like the P900 and the software is the exact same.. It comes with QuickOffice built in

The Phone Came Branded

picture taken with the cam:

it still sux!

The P900 compared to the P910

The Px series

Overall, the P910i gives the P900 a nice ××× spanking (as shown below):

the keypad is sturdy unlike the P900's
u can actually just hold on to the keyboard and type with it and not worry about the P9...

The rest of the phone is so similar to the P900 it is not worth going into detail about...
in short, I am disappointed with the phone and sony ericsson
they pulled a nokia...
change a lil something and market it as a new phone

Also, I tried putting the keypad of the P910 on the P900.. it doesnt work
there r more connectors on the P910i's keypad.. so for all those thinking of just buying the keypad.. forget it
I took pictures of it, but I forgot them on fobile's phone

P910, 7610 and Treo

P910 and Checkman's Hot 7610

Posted by: 100thMonkey

too bad all in all

Posted by: 100thMonkey

any improvements in the sync software? like catagories and recurring appointments

Posted by: fijbert

I didnt hv a chance to try that out yet
I only BTed my contacts from P900 to P910i.. and so far so good
compatibility works perfectly

Posted by: Bengalboy

Thanks for the preview Fijbert You want me to show you how to turn your camera on Macro???

Posted by: eyesonly6587

nice review, but yea, the marco mode would made the pics more clearer tho

but thanks for the pics

Posted by: fijbert

took the pix with my P900
I had lent out all my other phones

Posted by: jayesh

Hi fijbert could u kindly test the rf on the 910i .I hope its better than the p900 which while being adequate is no match for the k700i and nokias. I find the p900 rf a trifle annoying .

Posted by: fijbert

well, from what I've seen so far, carrying both phones on me on the same network.. they hv the same RF
the phone is exactly the same
I saw no difference in any point!

Posted by: ItsPat

Is the OS any different?

Posted by: fijbert

same
except mine is Voda
so basically I hv some extra voda stuff
but minus that, it is the exact same phone...

Posted by: nemik

thanks for the review! no need to upgrade is good news. i love my p900 more and more with each passing day.

Posted by: wolwol

bad boy....am waitin for my s700!

Posted by: 100thMonkey

Fij,

how it to use the keypad, how about banding in the screen?

Posted by: fijbert

banding the screen?

well using the keypad is actually simple, but I wld much rather use the on screen keyboard.. simply becuz I hv grown used to it, and I am much faster with it
if u hv fat fingers, there is no way u can type on the P910i
my fingers, slender as they r, I need to be careful on the keys I press
I am able to type fast, but I make a typo here and there.. I guess I need to get used to it
it does feel comfortable.. it is a very useful keyboard.. but if ur already good at the virtual keyboard, then this thing is like a prop...

Posted by: 100thMonkey

are the keys raised so that you can stike them or are they flush so you have to press down?

banding is when the color makes bands because the screen doesn't have the capacity to make sufficient contrasts

Posted by: fijbert

well the keyboard keys r just like the P900's OK key
slightly out

the screen doesnt band.. like I said, the phone is a carbon copy of the P900

Posted by: sonyclie77

@fijbert,

Very nice and short review! Thanks mate. Just curious, I haven't owned a P900 before, so are those apps you mentioned like Handy Day, Splash Photo and others demo versions?

Thanks!

Posted by: checkman

well, i definately wasnt satisfied. Fij came over and we played with the p910, i found NO DIFFRENCES between the p900 and the 910 (functionality wise), other than the qwerty keypad. i hope when its relased its the same price as a p900, cause if they make it more expensive, people are going to be dissapointed.

Posted by: C20LET

Sorry to hear that you"re disappointed...but probably the most useful upgrade is the jump from 16MB to 64MB RAM is it not? Have you enough contacts to load or other apps that might make you more aware of the increase in memory? Large contact lists take a bit to load in the P900....hoping it might be better in the 910....

Posted by: clarkkentva

Which memory stick does it support Duo or Duo Pro?

Posted by: DoubleVision19

Specs shows "Duo Pro"...Max is 1GB

Posted by: fobile

fij, post the pics of the keypad. i just emailed them to you. you can all see what we mean by "more connections". There are more pads on the 910 than on the 900. anyways, fij should post the pics soon. i took them with a v600, so please accept my apologies.

f0b

Posted by: fijbert

Thx to Fobile for taking these hot shot pix with his V600 :P

Posted by: fijbert

The apps r demos as far as what I've tried on it so far
as for loading times, yeah.. things r much faster.. I mean, the hot swap even is a lil faster

I'm sure the Voda apps r slowing the phone down tho...

Posted by: fobile

if the screen is a 265 or 262 or wtvr....do you think it possible to replace a P900 65k lcd ith a P910 LCD? I'm inclined to try....fij, lets try today?

Posted by: fijbert

yeah sure
why not
I can always hold u responsible for destroying the Prototype
we'll post pictures
the mad scientist at work

Posted by: fobile

we successfully swapped the LCDs. fij is currently using a 265k lcd in his P900...lucky homo. Anyways, it lives and it went smoothly. I took pics with my V80 but they are tiny little P'sOS. Sorry.

Posted by: fobile

1st person on this planet to have a P900 with a 265k LCD. ×××× Straight nikka.

Posted by: oferlaor

yeah, but the p900 will only show 64K colors on the 262K screen...

Is there really a substantial improvement in screen quality (particularly when outside in the sunlight)?

Posted by: oferlaor

yeah, but the p900 will only show 64K colors on the 262K screen...

Is there really a substantial improvement in screen quality (particularly when outside in the sunlight)?

Posted by: sdsviet

so wtih even the swap is the p900 showing only the 64k when the lcd is capable of 262k quality?

Posted by: fijbert

there is no noticeable change..
it was completely pointless

Posted by: sdsviet

can u play a video clip on both p900 and p910 side by side to see if there is a difference.

Posted by: Cheech

Hmmm......give an idea on response times with the viewer and other apps that were s-l-o-w on the P900. I want to know what difference that extra 48MB makes and is there a bigger memory for running apps?

Those pics didn't look too sad, probably looked better on the P910 screen. Oh and how's the speaker???

Posted by: SupraTT

Is it possible to use your backup from P900 and use the restore funktion to get the backup info to P910?

Posted by: symbiatico

Fijbert,

How's multi-tasking on the P910? Is it any different from the P900?

One serious weakness the P900 suffers from is how the most important onganizer apps (Messaging, Calendar, Contacts, and Jotter) default to their starting point if you so much as switch to any other app for a second. Only the built-in SE PIM apps seem to suffer from this silly amnesiac behavior. I really hope SE fixed this by now; it's totally unacceptable on a class leading device.

Posted by: fijbert

actually the increases in RAM allowed me to run so much without any sort of lag

Posted by: sdsviet

that's wat i like to hear. more ram = less lag.

Posted by: Cheech

That's one + point but how about screen update say when viewing stuf like pics and video??? Oh and is the viewer any faster?

Posted by: DON2003

can I fit a P910i casing on the P900?

if yes, I will wait for it to replace the case on my P900,

any comment?

Posted by: sdsviet

hmm that i not sure but i bet fjibert would know the answer to that. if there were hardware changes in the p910 then it might be a no but if not then i dont see a reason why it wouldnt fit.

why do u have 3 post of the same thing harleydog. click submit once only. hehe . yea i saw this last time with the topics b4 too.

Posted by: fijbert

@Cheech
honnestly, I dont see any quality difference between the screens
I'm sure Checkman and Fobile would back me up on this...
the movie that came with the phone (entitled picnic) sucked wad

@Don
in theory u cld fit the P910i's case on it... but what for? for the color? cuz if u expect to get the keypad to work, it wont
I tried already

@HarleyDog
the e-mail client, as far as my use was concerned looked exactly like the P900's

the only difference in the software was in the control panel, they added one extra features which is close to pointless
a MIDlet manager of some sort
and the built in web browser has a "Full Screen Mode" (still running R3 on my P900.. so dunno if the newer versions hv it)
I cant say more about the web browser as it refuses to use my GPRS connection to deal with internet surfing... so I just used opera...

sorry for making u guys wait..

Posted by: Harleydog

So in conclusion is it worth purchasing the P910 or not, in your opinion of course?

Posted by: symbiatico

Thanks a lot, Fijbert. Your insight is very appreciated.

Yes, the increase in RAM alone is the single most important upgrade for me. It's quite annoying to have apps quit in the background when others are used. A specific example is Opera and Picture; they don't seem to go together very well.

I would appreciate an answer to my initial question: If you switch among the main built-in apps, do they always default to their starting point?

Examples:

If you open an SMS, go to Contacts, then return to your SMS, are you sent back to the Messages starting point?

If you open the Contacts app, select someone's entry for editing, then switch to the Phone log to copy a number. Does the Contacts app keep at that number's entry or do you go back to the beginning?

Thanks in advance.

Posted by: jsalicru

Haha, i just have to say that I think its pretty funny that you guys all have big dollar phones but NO GOOD CAMERA!!!

It sucks to hear that they are about the same. It would have been nice if the P900 got a screen that looks as nice as the S700s, where you can really see the difference.

It would have been nice to swap cases so that the P900 can receive that mild, fresh upgrade.

Posted by: fijbert

personally, if u hv a P900, I dont see the point of going the extra mile unless u wanted the extra space for ur DUO
the keyboard sux too much to be worth an upgrade
checkman and fobile both agreed with me on this point

@symbiatico
just like P900, starting point
but again, this is a prototype.. maybe they will change it in the final release

Posted by: symbiatico

Quote:

Sad, isn't it

The Nokia Series 60 phones fair much better in this area. Third party apps on the P900 also don't default if you switch apps. I was hopeful SE will address this with a firmware update, but I'm beginning to have serious doubts.

On a far better note, more RAM is good! But really, it's what I desperately needed on the P900. Oh well, I'll just wait for the p1000.

Posted by: sdsviet

i have to say i wasnt very fond of the keyboard in the first place when i saw it. it didnt look practical at all. i dont know how the SE design team got that thru with the upstairs guys. wat im really going on was the upgraded ram and duo support. i would have loved the nice camera. but waited for the p1000 is gonna be a ×××× long time i say. it was hard enough for me to wait for the p910. i'll sell my p900 and risk spending a couple extra hundred bucks for wat i need. even though those bastards SE folks coulda made it better. i'll be piss if i buy this p910 and then find out SE put out a p1000 for christmas.

ps. YAY THIS IS MY 500 POST!!!!!!

Posted by: Cheech

Well the keyboard is just I suppose an idea that was knocked about in the SE R&D when they thought about using the back of the flip!

It's not bad for the size but i'd of liked to use the stylus for typing as the on-screen one, useful if your doing a large document and need screen space.

Shame about the video playback, it's time for a more powerful chipset.

BTW anyone heard of the new High Speed Memory Sticks coming out? I wonder if they work with the P910

Posted by: anlog

Does the P910 support the Bluetooth handsfree profile? It'd be nice to pair it in enhanced mode with my Jabra, or finally use it with the BT system in my car...

Please let us know!

Posted by: motomax

I am from Italy, I have a final release of the P910 but with english only.
I would like to have the t9 in italian too.
You think is possible?
Can you help me?

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards

Moto mi puoi dire se il P910 final release che hai indicato di avere ha il Rim Blackberry Cliente per posta eletronica. Mi piacerebbe anche sentire un'altro parere su questo telefono, la tastiera qwerty, etc.

Grazie

Posted by: Cheech

Go Here and select the right firmware version your P900 has. (Edit/system Information/Organiser:CXCxxxxxx xxxxx)

Err, don't know if it works with the P910 actually. SE should have a version up for that soon.

No word on Bluetooth handsfree profile support?

Posted by: Cheech

Just looked at the SE global support FAQ and to answer your quiery here's a quote

Quote:
The Bluetooth handsfree profile has a low power consuming “sniff" mode.

Oh and motomax, this might help you further!

Quote:
How do I change language?
When you start your phone for the first time, you must select a language. Once a language has been selected, unused languages are deleted in order to conserve storage space.
To change language in your phone, go to Applications > Control Panel > Other > Language selection. If the language you wish to use is not present in the list, use the Download Language application included on the Sony Ericsson PC Suite CD to change language. Additional languages are also available for downloading under Software in the navigation menu.

Posted by: anlog

If it really has the handsfree profile I'll be buying the P910a FOR SURE.

Screw the S700 and it's inability to use custom MP3 ring/SMS tones...

Posted by: Cheech

I don't want that S700 either as I can't go back to using buttons after UIQ. Got a Megapixel camera so no interest in it's abilities. Really I just want to continue with SE 'P' series as it does all I need without being a PC like ppc phones try!

Wifi would of been nice but I can wait and besides to be honest apart from home, I can't connect anyhow. It's an evolution that just get's better with every phone and after the P910 there just has to be a major upgrade, both software and hardware which adds the stuff we most want!

Posted by: hohoho24

How about get both of them?

Posted by: Cheech

Well I have a GX30 which is pretty good for pictures. Money is the REAL issue.

For those who have not seen it yet (posted in another thread a while ago), here is the P910 manual (it may take a while to download on a slow connection).

Posted by: clarkkentva

"The Bluetooth handsfree profile has a low power consuming “sniff" mode."

This is posted on the Sony Ericsson website as one of the differences between the P900 and the P910.

What the heck does this mean? Can some one explain what they are talking about?

Thanks.

Posted by: Cheech

At a guess, it probably only searches for a headset then when it pairs, maybe only connects if there is a call made or received. Sort of saving power over whatever handfree does now.

Posted by: anlog

The P900 supports the Bluetooth headset profile, but not the Bluetooth handsfree profile. Without the handsfree profile, you cannot use most Bluetooth car kits, and can't pair with a Jabra BT250 in enhanced mode, etc.

SE should have been a little more clear and said the following:

1. YES, the P910 supports the Bluetooth handsfree profile.
2. The Bluetooth handsfree profile in the P910 has a power saving feature that "sniffs" for the headset every so often.

I'd agree with you. It's not that big an upgrade if you are a P900 user. But alas, I'm not. So I'm definitely getting it when it reaches our shores.

Posted by: Cheech

But my P900 is getting tatty and the battery ain't what it used to be. The keyboard is a bit of a gimmick sure but it's not a bad effort making use of the empty space on the flip. I'm not that good with the virtual keyboard so maybe it'll be better for me?
