What can you currently do using Radio Shack's #19 cable with the Audiovox 8610?

At the moment, just adding custom ringtones. But I'd like to get to a point of being able to send Outlook appointments to the phone... maybe even download contacts/phone #s.

Do you by any chance know which MSM chip that the 8610 is, and also now that I have download CMX Studio 3.0, how do I make it compress my MP3s? I have five of them and each is less than 300 k right now.

Nope, I don't know what chip the 8610 has. But I just use the default settings of CMX Studio and the ringtones are just fine... and small. 130K MP3 file compressed down to 24K.

Also, what is the allowed capacity for ringtones on the 8610? I have reduced them all down to less than 160 k altogether. Is that alright?

Max ringtone size is 100k, length is 19 seconds. I've never tried uploading a file larger than 100k, so I don't know what will happen. If you use a ringtone that is smaller than 100k but longer than 19 seconds the phone will only play the first 19 seconds and then stop.

I don't use CMX studio anymore. I found that I can make better sounding ringtones by using regular MP3 files. 24 kbps CBR, 16KHz, mono format works great. You can use your audio editor to make it sound just right, save as an MP3, and just upload it directly (without the .mp3 extension). 19 seconds in that format is only 56k. I've also found if you do a bit of dynamic compression, you'll get a lot more volume out of your superphonics. And of course you get the best results when your source is a never-compressed wave or a very high bitrate MP3, otherwise it just sounds like sh*t.

CMX studio is really good (IMHO) for creating multimedia ringtones with pictures, animations, multiple audio tracks, etc., but for simple ringtones I think it's overkill.

But of course, to each their own. Try it and use whatever works best for you.

Do you know if multimedia ringtones are supported on the 8610?

I believe they are, though I can't say with 100% certainty. You are able to download animated ringtones from VM, so I can only assume there is some functionality for it.

BTW -- you've said you can import mp3s directly into CMX. How? I guess a better question is which version of CMX are you using? I have version 3.34 and it doesn't allow importing of mp3s.

Hey, i agree with willywanker on using standard mp3 files to make superphonic ringtones (though i first changed the file extention to .mid when i renamed the mp3), i was completely confused by using CMX to try to make superphonic ringtones, since i didn't know how to import mp3 files into it, plus the overall process was perplexing. I also wonder how its possible to import the mp3 file into CMX.

Anyways, since i'm a new member to this board, and I originally found out how to get THIS far on tweaking my phone through HowardForums, i would like to show my appreciation for everyone's tips & info. THANKS!

Now, if only we could figure out how to get backgrounds onto the 8610 that would be great!
