Build Quality

The build quality is rather disappointing for me. When you first open the box, the phone looks small and is very attractive. When you pick it up, it feels surprisingly light but it makes it feel cheap. Running your fingers around the phone only helps to increase the feeling of "cheapness". The phone slides up and down with a click but is a little loose in the fully up or down positions. When in the up position, the keys are revealed and have a nice blue backlight to them. They may look nice but the keypad is a bit disappointing. The keys are small and I don't like the sound the make when pressed. (Not the sound from the speaker, the actual sound of the key). The directional keys also serve as shortcuts on the home screen. Right is for sms, left is for games, down is for call lists and pressing up makes the phone verbally announce the time.

The Screen

I didn't expect much from the screen since its a mono chrome OLED but its actually quite nice. There are these color bars at the bottom much like the color dots on the LG VX6000. The screen is easy to look at although I haven't taken it outside yet. It is also of decent size and best of all its an OLED which means no backlight so better battery life.

The Rest

Once I started playing with the phone, I began to like it. It has nice menus that are easy to navigate. The phone comes with a variety of ringtones that are semi loud but can't beat the moto e398 or nokia 7610. It would have been nice if there was a dedicated ringtone speaker. Some of the ringtones surprised me as there is the Eminem without me midi pre-installed. The phone also has several games that are kinda crappy, but do the job when you are bored. Once you go throughout the menu, you are surprised to find that there really isn't much on the phone. I was going through settings and really found nothing that surprised me or grabbed my interest. I was liking the phone so far until I decided to do a test call to the phone. I got my Nokia and dialed my number. The phone began to vibrate and ring. I picked it up and slid it open to answer my call and to my surprise it was still ringing. THERE IS NO ACTIVE SLIDE ON THIS PHONE!!! I had to hit the call button to answer it. I couldn't believe it so I went throughout the menu several times and found nothing. I have to say I am rather disappointed that you cannot slide-to-answer. Why would they not include this? At least you can operate the phone while it is closed. (That includes answering a call).

I cannot comment on battery life because I just got the phone. Also, it gets full reception in my house just like my nokia and moto.

Pros

-Small
-Good Looking
-Nice Screen
-Use while closed
-Decent earpiece quality
-Nice screen

Cons

-Cheap feeling
-No speakerphone or dedicated ringtone speaker
-Small keys
-No active slide
-Lack of features

For pics and video of the phone, visit my moblog. Sorry they can't be of better quality but I only have my 7610 around.

yeah, that really really made me mad. Also to update, the screen is hard to see in sunlight. You might want to consider looking at the CS6 as well because it has a color screen but its an stn screen which doesn't do well in light either. I also cannot get tzones working

Posted by: n3985

I can't find any place for the CS6. And if the phone is like you say it is, I'd rather get the cheap one to play around with.

Posted by: braindead5400

I got the S6 from capitol paging in LA. He says he can get me a DA6 as well which is a swivel screen camera phone they make. He sells on ebay as capitolpaging. Ask him if he could get a cs6. There is also an auction for a CS6 but its in australia.

Posted by: n3985

I saw his auction and the AU one....but there are many sellers selling the S6 but have little feedback and almost none with previous phone sales.

Posted by: braindead5400

i noticed that too but I got it from capitolpaging with no problems. He owns a store in LA

So how is the receptionon the phone(other than in your house)? The antenna looks like it came from an old SE. And any PC Sync software for uploading ringtones? Or infrared? And what kind of ringtones does it support? TIA

Posted by: braindead5400

I'll comment on reception tomorrow but it doesn have PC Sync but I do not know where to get the cable. there is no IR/bluetooth and it uses the 40 voice yamaha mmf ringtones as well as standard midi's

One last thing, do you happen to know his reserve price on eBay?

Posted by: braindead5400

i paid 175

So I took the phone out yesterday. Number one problem is the display is unreadable in sunlight. I could barely see a thing trying to walk down the street. I was taking the train to work so I wouldn't have to pay for parking so I got to test it in the Randolf street tunnel. The phone held a Tmobile signal longer than any other phone I've had. We had almost reached the platform when it finally lost it. I got off the train and it picked it up again but then quickly lost it. The next test was at work where I don't get a signal because i'm in the middle of a huge building. Here is where I had a slight problem. Usually, if you hold the phone up, you can get a signal. Thats what I do with my nokia and moto. The S6 takes more time to find the signal so you'll end up waiting longer but it does find it. I tried to place a call and it was succesful. I kept trying to see if they would all go through and a few ended up not going through or were dropped but that happens with my other phone too, so it isn't that bad

so this is the first phone with an external OLED? hmm well i hope they improve the quality cuz what you said about not being able to read in sunlight is a big problem...the tech. is promising though...hope more manufacturers go with it

Posted by: altec18

how much did u get the phone for ????

Posted by: BMWFilms

Amoi is taiwanese or korean??

Posted by: n3985

Amoi = Chinese

Posted by: BMWFilms

ah ok...the OLED main screen thing is cool though...GO CHINA lolz

Posted by: braindead5400

its not the first phone with an OLED though, the LG vx6000 has one and the Samsung e700/e715 have it

Posted by: BMWFilms

they have external OLEDS though, yours is internal so it is the first then right?

Posted by: braindead5400

well, technically (i think) but since its a slide phone it only has one screen. It is the only phone I've heard of with a primary OLED screen though. Looks really nice even though its not color its just too bad you can see it in sunlight

Posted by: braindead5400

just an update. I found out today that the phone isn't too durable. I happened to have tripped over my cousin who tripped running in the rain and totally screwed the front of the phone. The grey piece in front of the earpiece broke off and the black face of the phone got really deeply scratched. I'm not very found of the phone anymore anyway. I'm waiting to get the Amoi DA6 which is a rotating screen camera phone.

i just won my s6 and so far what i hear is not bad! one thing i am confused about, i remember that oled was supposed to be amazing in the sunlight? also i like the size and weight and the fact that its a slide. the only thing is that it is not a colour screen. but the only thing i wonder about is they say u can download pics on it, i bought mine off ebay and the guy has a pic of the phone with a womens face on it? so i am confused? can i put an actual picture on the display? and are the keys really metal. btw i guess i got a good deal i paid $102-50 usd including ship and headset! so i guess for that price it should be good?

here is the phone with the womens picture, is this a trick?

how can the screen support a pic?

this is from the amoi website:

Metal keys with sapphire blue backlight?!

Posted by: braindead5400

it can have pics because its a greyscale display, tho I've never put my own on it. I'm holding the phone now, there is no way these keys are metal, if they are then its a really really cheap metal, they look and feel like plastic
