Swap question!!!

I went to Nextel service center for upgrade my firmware and they mentioned swap the phone. I wasn't clear about what he was talking about, and what does swap means in this case?

they give you a new/refurbished phone and send yours in to be serviced.

is this for temporarily or I will use their phones for the rest of my life. then what kinda phones they will probably send me, the same one (might have the same problems) or different one
