yeah its a shame

its the only major fault on an otherwise perfect phone

Great review I like the new style on your reviews and as I thought the resolution is not enough to such a big display

Regards and again really good work

Posted by: Donkey

I just wish the display has more lines to show a clearer picture. But since I am not going to renew my T-Mobile contract, I don't want to have a 1900 only phone that I cannot use with Cingular's 850. However, a nice looking phone tho.

Posted by: luskao

I don't like one thing about this review...is the size comparisasion(I think is wrong typed...)people will know the size of the model compairing or having in your hands because thats people are looking for...real pictures. Like mob review that they have a section called live pictures...

Also one thing I liked is the skin colour creator...and also I like the review's conclusion.

Regards

Actually the video recording limit isn't 30 seconds

Go to Menu - Messages - Message setup - MMS setup - User settings, scroll down to 'Size indication'. Set all three to '000 kB' and the parameter behind to 'Lim'. Now go to video camera mode select Options - Settings and make sure 'Recording time' is set to 'MMS compatib'. You will now have 1 minute and 15 seconds video recording

There is more

I can now record 15 minutes on my S65
It depends on available memory on the phone.

One thing to note is that the counter only displays 3 digits, so when it says for example '1:22' it might mean '11:22'

Posted by: tiger33

wow

GREAT TIP

i got 14mins now :-)

Posted by: luskao

Hey Tiger33 i think is good to tell you too what is not so good...

I like a lot the e398 review because of the size compare. And when I'll finish my exams we will talk about translating if you are interested...

Regards an I will tell you if I find any mistake or something to improve...

;-)

okay cool with me

Posted by: Histery

i'm confused,
th S65 doesn't have mp3 functionality, but the cx65 does?

strange...
"mp3 functionality is not supported" : user guide S65
"in addition it supports mp3-playlists and the configuration of your ringtones" : user guide CX 65

isn't it the way, the S65 is better then the CX65??
(ok except camera, where S65 has a resolution 1280*960 and the CX65 only 640*480, but anyway)

Posted by: molna

None of them supports MP3.

Hopefully the last correction regarding the video recording noe :
Even though it says 8 minutes, 20 minutes etc, you're only able to recorde around 2 minutes and 5 seconds. Then the phone will either crash, go back to standby or automatically save the recording (mine goes back to standby).

So, max 2 minutes video recording then

Posted by: Histery

@molna
but why does the CX65 support MP3-Playlists if it cannont play mp3 music??

Posted by: molna

Is it in the official User Guide?

probably just a mixup with som future 65-series phone not yet presented

Posted by: Histery

yeeah, it'S in the original user guide pdf.
I only found german ones, so if you understand german, see this:
CX65 User Guide
and go to Page 114 last sentence

And also see this:
S65 User Guide
there is nothing in it about mp3

Posted by: tiger33

i just tested out the flash adapter and it works GREAT ;-)

worth the extra bit

tiger, couple of questions for you:

--can you play videos full-screen on the phone? what formats does it support?

--does it show photos full-screen? can you zoom in like the v600?

if i remember correctly then yes it does show videos full screen but no FF or RW

photos are full - screen (remember its a 1.3megapixel camera) and u can zoom in and rotate phones, basically u can do whatever u want with the photos

Just got my S65 four days ago.

I really like its looks, weight, and feel. Signal strength is great. Menu navigation and themes/skins are cool. Don't care much for mp3, so not an issue for me.

However one feature that really disappoints me is the photo quality taken from its 1.3-megapixel camera. I also own a Sharp GX30 phone which has a 1.1-megapixel CCD camera, and the picture quality is really excellent. The S65 can't even come close. I think the camera in the S65 is of the CMOS type, which would explain the poor picture quality. I have also seen pictures taken from the Nokia 7610's 1-megapixel camera, and the quality is slightly better than the S65. The 7610 also uses the CMOS-type camera.

Another negative point is its poor battery life. One full charge only lasts me about 1.5 days, and I make only a few calls a day and don't even use the camera. Got around this by carrying a backup battery.

But I am still happy my spanking new S65, and can live with its shortcomings.

now that is odd i've not charged it for four days now ?

as for the camera the only problem is the richness of the colours but its quality is alot sharper than the other phones out there.

The big problem with the camera is that its only as good as the person using it, unlike other camera phones such as the sharp which u can just click and get a good pic. With the Siemens u really need to make changes to the white balance, brightness then take the picture..

i would still rate the camera highly if u know how to get the best out of it, thats why i gave it a good score in the review.

Posted by: alfa 156

can you be sure that the poor quality pictures are due to software not due to hardware? ok if its software a new firmware can maybe fix the problem but if the problem is in the hardware...then....ooooopsssss

well the latest software does improve the picture somewhat

but remember the problem is only indoors so i think it could be hardware at the end of the day

personally i didnt get the phone for the camera i got it and reviewed it for its other features such as 1.2 bluetooth and memory slot etc (But the camera is useful at times)

my tip is that if u do get the phone then u MUST GET THE FLASH ADAPTER TOO!!

the flash really helps even in middle light conditions

Posted by: longj49

I have the latest firmware, and the phone is in perfect working order.

You should see the quality of pictures taken by the Sharp GX30, then you can realize the S65 camera's shortcomings, indoors or outdoors, with or without flash.

Maybe I'll try to take some pictures from both my S65 and GX30 under the same environments and post them here. Pictures speak louder than words afterall.

I really like the S65 anyway because of its excellent phone functions and performance, and not because of its camera.

after having a good play around with the GX30 i now completely agree with u

and the problem seems hardware so cant be changed any more using firmware

please do that
thank you!

Here are some pictures taken this morning:

From my Sharp GX32 1.1-megapixel CCD Camera:

From my Siemens S65 1.3-megapixel CMOS Camera:

The difference in image quality from both cameras can plainly be seen. All pictures are unretouched in any way. Settings for both cameras were set for maximum image quality. The photos of the car were taken with the sun just over at the upper left-hand corner, therefore the slight glare.

I must emphasize that the Sharp GX32 has a CCD camera whereas the Siemens S65 has only a CMOS camera. The GX32 is selling for almost twice the price of the S65, partly because of the cost of the CCD camera. We must keep this in perspective when trying to compare the two phones.

When compared to other 0.3-megapixel CMOS cameraphones, the Siemens S65 still stands out. The signal reception of the S65 is much better than the GX32.

With the GX32 and the S65, I feel I have the best of both worlds.

Siemens S66 won't be any different than the already released S65 except the supported GSM bands:

S65 --> GSM 900/1800/1900
S66 --> GSM 850/1800/1900

I hope providers and Siemens USA will do better job on the firmware this time than they did on the 56-series phones. The S66 just makes it more attractive to N.A. consumers by supporting 2 GSM N.A. bands and 1 Euro where the S65 supports 2 GSM Euro bands and 1 N.A.

BTW, I found news acticles online but didn't see/find an official announcement from Siemens USA or on Siemens' International site either??
