I am totally new to WAP, and I don't even really understand it yet. I read the FAQ, but it already assumes that you know what WAP is all about.

Can someone please summarize WAP for me?

Here is what I would like to be able to do:
I would like to be able to access some Internet resources (email, news, stock quotes mostly) from my Verizon Wireless phone for free (no charges or airtime usage). Is that what all the "free WAP" postings here are all about?

I am about to buy a new phone. Which phones are good for the free WAP "workarounds"? I am considering the vx4500 at the moment.
