Testing P900 --> P910 Upgrade: Need Help!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Global Mobility

I will be testing the reliability of the P900 to P910 firmware upgrade, and need some help from P900 owners out there.

Disclaimer: This software "upgrade" is NOT endorsed by SEMC, and WILL technically void your existing product warranty.

Now since that part is out of the way, you can find more details on the help that I need by clicking the link below.

P900 to P910 Upgrade Beta Testers Needed

Please do NOT PM about how much I charge for this service, as I do not yet feel comfortable enough to charge for this type of service yet.

Also, do NOT send me your P900 that you depend on for mission critical work. I will take no responsibility for lost data, and lost productivity due to the upgrade.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you can participate in our test program for the P900.

Thank you,

Now there's a price I DEFINITELY can't beat!

Today, I tested the HBH-30, HBH-35, HBH-65, and HBH-600 headsets, and they all failed to connect to the P900 after the modification.

I tested two bluetooth enabled Pocket PC's and 2 laptops using different bluetooth stacks (Widcomm/Nokia), and all failed to connect to the modified P900 at this time.

Given the problems listed above, I will refrain from calling this an "upgrade" but, rather a "modification." Bluetooth functions on the P900 are very important for many that purchased this device. Crippling this function in any cannot be considered an "upgrade."

SE have created this whitepaper document available on the SE developer site which lists the differences between the P900 and P910i

one difference of note is a "new bluetooth chipset and microcode"

is it possible that this is why you guys are having this bluetooth problem?

Posted by: anlog

Run a checksum on the original P900 R5D bluetooth file, and the one named "P910a Bluetooth".

I believe it is the same file. The P910's native Bluetooth image won't work on the P900, because it uses a different chipset. The new version of Symbian/UIQ uses Bluetooth calls that are definitely conflicting with the older chipset.

anlog,

You're correct. I didn't even bother flashing the bluetooth chip, and left it alone with the original P900 bluetooth code on my personal P900. Also, the bluetooth hardware might be different on both devices as the P910 finally supports the bluetooth "handsfree" profile where the P900 does not.

I guess the best we can hope for is a new release from the ZenithTeam, that supports the current bluetooth hardware of the P900. It remains doubtful, however.

I have an HP Tablet PC and upgraded the microcode on it to support bluetooth 1.2. Hopefully, it is possible to upgrade the P900 in a similar manner.

I think this is as stable as we're gonna get it. Our last hope is that these pre-release revisions have BT problems, and another conversion "kit" with the production release will fix the issue. Who knows...

It appears that people are even having problems with the HBH headsets on REAL P910i's.

Check this .

Of course, he may also be running the pre-release firmware.

Bengalboy has two "production" P910i's that he is selling. Maybe he can test his BT headsets with it and post the results...

Finally, fijbert mentioned that there was a recall of some sort for the P910i's. Perhaps he can shed some light on the subject...

I have been using my BlueSpoon Digital on my current P910i....it works perfectly.. No issues, no problems. Occasionally it loses connection but requires only reconnection via the P910i or pressing the Digital's accept button...

Organizer is R1A30
Bluetooth is R2C

R2C... So it's definitely a new BT chip in the P910. Darn...

R1A30... Conversion is using R1A17 (P910a), though there could be some revision discrepancies between the "i" and "a" models...

We need to get a conversion set put together with the production P910i firmware release. I'm going to fire off a message to Lead right now...

yea true, R5D is latest on p900, for bluetooth.

There might be good news on the way with regards to the bluetooth problems. The person that actually released the modified firmware files has stated that the bluetooth chips on the P900 and P910 are the same, and that the problem is within the GDFS of the P910a firmware.

People do not seem to have as much of a problem with their bluetooth connections on the P910i, and therefore the GDFS might have been corrected in that version. We will all have to wait and see.

But, now there is some hope of a true "upgrade."

Posted by: anlog

Lead stated that the firmwares are the same, not the chipsets. SE states the chipsets are different.

Production P910's are shipping with BT firmware version R2C, and the P900's latest is R5D.

I think Lead meant that the firmwares were interchangeable.

In addition, if he is releasing a GDFS patch for the BT issue, then it is not even related to the BT firmware at all. The GDFS is stored in the AVR chip.

@analog

This ebay seller claims his P900 upgrade with P910 firmware includes working BT - what do you think

I sent the seller an email and he claimed that the BT works!

He is LYING...

(I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE FOR THE CROSS-POSTING, BUT I THINK THIS IS IMPORTANT)

I have some disheartening news about the Bluetooth problems associated with the conversion. Lead (the main programmer of Fighter) developed the conversion files on a prototype P910a, which was using the P900's Bluetooth chip (IRMA). Production P910's ship with a Blueberry chip, which uses a totally different firmware.

So, his original statement that the BT firmwares were interchangeable might be wrong after all. Hopefully he will be looking into this ASAP, because this conversion has obviously become a huge deal, worldwide...

hmmm... sounds like more info is needed, which we'll get when "Lead" gets done with his analysis.

In the meantime, has anyone tried the Nextlink products, specifically the digital bluespoon?

I wish that developer luck in his attempts to solve the BT problem. but hey, this is what happens when you are fussy :P

The registration on the site does not work !!
I would like to test the upgrade on my P900, cuz
it would be just great to have MS PRO support.

How can I get the upgrade?

Thanks
