Upgrading T68m firmware

I've had this t68m for about a year and a half now. I stopped using it after about 6 months because of the really slow navigation and idiotic UI (can't add phone number to phone book from the home screen).
Lately I've seen posts on craigslist offerring to upgrade my phone for $15-30. Will an upgrade fix the aforementioned complaints? What's a fair price?

r8a would increase the speed of the phone a bit
