Verizon Phone Firmware

Does anyone know what exactly Verizon does when they upgrade the firmware on one of their phones? It strikes me that it should be possible to either rip the firmware off of one of the phones, make some tweaks, then send it back on, or get a copy of the firmware from somewhere else, and use that instead. I think it could be immensely useful for fixing various complaints people have about the phones, for example the Audiovox 8xxx phones. For example, if firmware from one of the other providers that offers the same phone (from an employee, perhaps - any takers?), it could be possible to fix any number of problems. I doubt the connectors could be very different from one of the data cables, the difficulty to me seems to be in getting the firmware itself, and what to do with it once you have it. Does anyone know anything about this process, what might be possible to do, or some huge flaw in my logic, that would render the idea completely useless? I'm at a bit of a loss, and haven't been able to find much information on the subject.
Thanks.
