p910 screen quality vs. Pocket PC PDA

Hey , I was just wondering since the SE 910i supposedly has a 256k TFT , it should look better than a 65k TFT found on most other devices , including PDA's. Right? Or is this a case of overhype? Can't seem to find a clear concensus on this. I'm asking because I am , basically , a day away from buying the Sony. Unfortunatly sight unseen in person , ergo the question. Thanx to anyone who can help in this delicate pre-purchase moment.

Cheers!

I can tell you that the P910 screen is better than the screen on the P900.

When making a decision to buy the P910 (or P900) you need to think about your requirements. The P910 is a really good communications device (voice, SMS, email, Opera) and average PDA and probably, now anyway, a less than average multimedia device (poor camera but good MP3 player, which does sound good). You need to think of the P910 as a complete package of s/w, h/w and design (many input methods, flip, jog dial, etc). Also the P910 has a new multiconnection BT capability and the battery lasts a long time (relatively). If you have one or two specific requirements (games and watching videos) you should probably look elsewhere. But if you want an all round device that does most things well and a device with a really good battery life then you should go for the P910.

Hey Pdajah , well , I fit that bill. It will be my main phone , no landline , my only e-mail access and internet. I very much like the long battery life. Pro's and con's , pro's and con's ....

@pdajah: u mentioned if watching videos etc is a criteria to look elsewhere but the other pda type have a screen of 65k (16 bit) only so is there something i'm missing ?

I don't have a PPC but I do have a Clie Th55, which has both BT & WiFi and a 320x480 screen (better than PPC!). The P910 screen has a similar brightness and the 262k colours makes the displayed items look just a little more solid and sharp. The P910 has a really good integration of phone and PDA, hardware and software. When the flip is closed you can use a combinaiton of the jog dial and the menu button to perform many looks ups and change settings without have to open the flip and search out the stylus etc. The real killer features, for me, of the P910 is the 64MB user flash memory, 32MB of RAM (I can load all my apps in user memory and store data on the Duo Pro) and the BT that support multiple connections (so you can use a BT GPS and BT headset at the same time). I started all the apps on my P910 (including many Epocware and Symbianware apps and Mobipocket and Wayfinder) and I still had 19MB od RAM left!

@wevek

My comments are based on comparison reviews others have undertaken in the quality of video playback; many members at Esato have used both the P900 and XDAII and have claimed the video is better (resolution and colour depth are not the only factors, speed of rendering is also important for smooth video) but on a comparison of all the freatures many Esato members have choosen the P900.

I really can't differentiate the colors between my PPC and P910. There's a matter of brilliance found in some devices that tricks the mind into thinking resolution is actually better. Prior to getting the P910 I did find a lot of clarity in my Foma handset. However, it still didn't 'wow' me. Let alone I have a handset where the outside 'preview' screen was 265k which most phones struggle to get on their main screens. With the P910 I really don't harp on the clarity. I guess if I were to be picky it would be looking at the sharpness of the icons. It's kinda like the subtle differences that an HD tv set brings when it appears to hence the content it displays. I can't make any of those comparisons between the P910 and PPCs. The differences are just too negligible.

Hmmm I think 65K's are fine for a handheld device don't you? I've used my iPAQ before and now my P900 and the screen is perfectly fine. Unless I was thinking of doing some heavy image editting on my tiny phone I would think about a higher colour monitor, but I think it's more of a marketing catch than anything else. Oh I guess it can be also a mine's better than yours case...haha. Now if this new screen makes outside viewing even better, then I'd go for that! Looking at the new Sony camcorders' LCD panel with the backlight off is so easy to see the image on the screen. Why can't they make the same in a mobile? Take care guys!

Just got my P910i (at only £449 I might add) and thought the colours were not what I expected of a 262K screen. Ran Sman and it indicats only 65K

Are SE trying a fast one on us?? I seem to recall the whitepaper saying that 262K is ONLY supported when viewing fullscreen pictures.

Oh and why enhance the clock icon to look as if the hands work when it still don't
