Panasonic x66 several questions

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello

I just got my Panasonic x66 two weeks ago, and now, after browsing many web sites, i have some questions.

I have read that this phone should be able to download games. Yet, neither via GPRS (unsupported content) nor via IrDA (invalid infrared data) this seems to work. The phone came with five games installed, all of which can not be deleted. Any idea?

How can i find out which software version is it?

Is it possible to change a language pack? I live in Thailand, also bought the phone here, but it does not support thai language... seems to be an european model (german, english, french and spanish). I don't need thai menu, but i want to be able to read thai SMS!

Is it normal that the screen is so "greenish"..? Wallpapers and taken pictures just look un-natural on the phone, but if downloaded to PC, they look good. The screen looks like has too much "green". Setting contrast does not really change that, it just becomes more faded or darker.

How much memory is this phone supposed to have??? Review-Websites state "4 MB" but mine got only 1.7 MB... also the manual says "1.7 MB".

Is it anyhow (maybe via some software?) possible to create a new sub-folder in "Pictures" to store those used for caller ID (i uploaded many 70x70 pixel jpg's for this purpose) away from those taken by the cam? Twice already i accidentally deleted a caller ID picture! Or, can they be "protected" like in my other phone, a Sanyo?

Finally, where can i find a software/driver, that enables me to use this phone as a GPRS modem via IrDA? Panasonic's website does not offer it, and thei'r data-connection assistant software seems not to support either the x66 or IrDA.

Many thanks in advance for your help

Kindest regards.....

Hello

Thank you very much for that, it did work! So my phone has software

GAX66A34

Hmm lots of info I guess the actual version is "A34".... further, i found that there is a bug in this software, i think it's got to be the software.....

When i make a call (dial out), the other end is inaudible weak, even the volume is set to "4". When i hang up, and dial that same number again, it will be loud.

Now, when i dial a number NOT in the phonebook (!!!), it will be weak as well, but here pressing the right side of the 4-way button does increase the volume, the display says still "4" but it gets louder in three steps.

Incoming calls are always loud......

Also, is there any chance of getting rid of the seemingly permanent GPRS connection? That icon for "GPRS active" is always on the display, even when i set the browser to a different profile (other network, or a CSD profile), it still stays there. I suspect that this is the reason why i just can't get more than three days of pure standby (no calls, no data, no camera, not even opening the flip!) out of the battery. I think that is very lousy a battery life. Talktime tough is ok, having talked for a consecutive hour doesn't seem to empty the battery.

To understand, i use this phone as a "backup", just in case my CDMA would let me down, and also i use it ocassionally for GPRS, because the CDMA allows only limited wap access. Talking with this Panasonic happened so far only for testing purposes.

I would appreciate any information - but it seems that the x66 is not very popular?

Kind regards....

HI, I believe that it was my reply that got deleted... but I wasn't able to look at your reply either!?

Anyway, sorry for the wrong info regarding checking the version number, I got confused...

A34 seems to be the latest version so far...

Regarding loudness, I can only think of something I experienced before... that both the speakerphone and handset volume are the same, so if you change one, it affects the other.

GPRS indicator will always turns on if it finds a network supporting GPRS.

X66 was a 'little' popular at the time of its release because of its small size, but then it was 'thick' and that it doesn't have Bluetooth. Then, it doesn't even support clips for MMS, and WAV ringtone formats. You can't even use your recorded sound for a ringtone.

I loved my X66... but I had to sell it, unfortunately.

Hello again

Ya, i love this phone particular because it is "thick"... it sort of looks chubby And that design really gets me. This x66 is only the second phone in my life i bought ONLY because of it's looks! The first was a Ericsson t20, also a short, thick one... chubby

About that volume thing, i just tested it... speakerphone was set to "4" as well.... But that is something i can live with, not a big problem since i use that phone for backup and GPRS only anyway....

About the MMS stuff... what "clips" do you mean? I can receive animated stuff.... sure not real video clips tough.

And ringtones... ya, shame that recorded voice can not be used, but i think there's software available that can convert mp3 or wav files to mmf? Because i found that this x66 does support that kind of ringsound that includes voices ("true tones"), i have downloaded several of those and they work fine. Funny thing is that neither the manual nor the advertising for this phone mentiones this capability....

About bluetooth, i really don't need that. I seldom use a handsfree, and transferring pictures and sounds from/to the PC works like a dream via IR.... if only Panasonic would have a driver to use this phone as a modem over GPRS!

But it's ok, it is just a cute little phone and i LOVE it

Kindest regards.....

Yeah, I meant video clips...

It does support MMF... I learned converting one format to another when I had this phone...

It's a cute little phone, and I loved it... the reason I had to sell it was because... it was dual-band and I was going to another country that doesn't support it.

I miss that phone!

I have the x60 which is Europe's equivalent of the x66.
I have noticed the volume to be woeful when phoning people - my partner whispers on the phone too I'm sure so hearing her when walking down a road is next to impossible even when the volume is on 4

When I dial out, the volume ALWAYS defaults to 3 and I have to increase the volume. When anyone phones me, it defaults to 4 but I cant increase volume further... bit of a problem really, as my old Nokias all remembered the volume setting, as does my partner's Samsung E710 and her old GX10i.

Likewise though, I have no ideas how to solve it (I also bought the phone for its looks - I think its great!)
