Modifying a T637 - any expertise appreciated.

I just upgraded to a SE T637 with AT&T's GSM service. Two things I'd like to modify if possible:

1. Change the text that appears on the screen. Currently it says "AT&T Wireless" across the top. I'd like to find a way to either replace or modify the preset text with something more personalized. Other phones I've had in the past allowed me to choose some of the text on the display.

2. This phone has two buttons dedicated to mMode (WAP)...the button on the side marked "online" and the upper right key on the front (that one I'm guessing was assigned by AT&T). I'd like to reassign one or both to other features which I use more frequently, i.e. IR/bluetooth transfer, the settings menu, etc. I don't plan on using the mMode service much so having two buttons dedicated to it is overkill.

Can anyone tell me if these mods are possible, and if so, how to do them?

you'd have to remove the AT&T branding in order to get the normal softkey (which is a drop list for turning on/off silent, bluetooth, IR, Post Note, Status, and lock keys)

On an SE phone? Probably on a Nokia that you did that. As far as I know, the text you refer to cannot be removed nor changed.

The only way I know of that allows you to unbrand your phone is to replace the firmware with something else, such as a generic SE T637's.

a mod for the online button which I've done...go to your wap bookmarks and make a new one with the address "mailto:" without the quotes, then set it as your homepage. Now, when you hit the online button it will take you to a blank text message "write new" screen. So that at least brings the mMode count down to one.

The way I did it, I use T-Mobile, but I use an AT&T phone. I clicked on "mMode" and it said "Your request for a service could not be fulfilled. Please try again...etc." and I clicked "More". Then I went down to bookmarks.

The hack is a nice one.

Question: What do you have your left softkey set to? Is it possible to change it, because mine is "Calls".

i think my right one is "calls" while my left is "mMode" but i'm on vacation and i don't have it w/me so i'll check when i get back 2mrw. Merry Christmas.

Yes, you can change the "AT&T Wireless" operator name to something else. Don't listen to anyone who says that you cannot. It is a VERY hard process, but it is possible. I have also unbranded my T637 to change the Mmode button to a "More" button. Here are some pictures:

Sorry for the quality of the last two pictures, LCD screen + crappy digital camera = hard to take pictures.

The only problem is that the length of the name you want to change it to, has to have the same amount of characters as the original name. ie: Cingular = 8 Characters, AT&T Wireless = 13.
