lg l1200 data cable drivers

Just bought a data cable for the lg l1200. It is a straight usb cable without the serial converter. When I plug the phone into the computer I get an error message (from windows)saying that an unkown usb device has been connected but is malfunctioning. The drivers that came with the cable seem to have loaded correctly, but no device shows up in any of the hardware tables. I have tried all of the various drivers suggested here, including LG's site, but none work?.
