Oh my.. GD88 USB Data Cable Blues.. Can anyone help me?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok, so here's the deal.. I bought a cheapie USB Data cable off of fleabay; and the seller isn't returning any e-mails I send him.

The cable came with two CDs that he burnt himself, each CD has a bunch of ringtones etc.. plus a handful of USB Drivers. From what I can tell this is the Prolific USB To serial adapter. However when I plug in the cable to the USB port, it detects it as a USB Data cable.. It then asks for a driver, I point it to the driver and I get (every time) "This location does not contain information about the hardware you are trying to install". This includes with the latest drivers off of the Prolific website.

I also tried the MA cable drivers, that didn't work either. Same problem.

I tested this on my laptop as well (Both are running XP Pro, my home PC is SP2, the laptop is SP1); and it wouldn't work there either. Can someone help me? Windows picks up it's a USB Data Cable, I just cannot get it to recognize the driver file(s)... Very very very confused here and need your help!

Hrmm that's what I thought.. silence. It's near impossible trying to figure this out without the guy helping me who sold it to me (and who isn't replying...).. Here's a picture of the cable/package, anyone recognize it?

Install the driver before you plug in the cable. That works.

I got the cable too but the packaging looks diff from yours. But from your desc it seems they are the same cable. Anyway, when I plug it in with the phone connected, my laptop complains power surged and stopped the usb host. The cable doesn't work well with my powered USB hub though.

Luckly, I have two other desktop PCs. It doesn't work with my older P3-450, same problem as laptop. It works with the P3-650 however.

Also be caution that the cable generates a lot of heat like burned, it's normal but you can tell its low quality.

You could help me with a question I have then.

The cable and soft ware are install correctly but I can only upload and download to the phone book or scheduler. If i upload images to the phone no probs but if I try to download them nothing.

The images are in the data folder, should they be somewhere else?

Posted by: kareshi

I could download the images without problem. Oh now I pay attention to your topic.. the cable I had problem with was the X70 USB cable. For GD88 I bought a serial cable. However, I think if you are able to upload/download phonebook, there's no reason why you can't download the images. What error did you get?

Posted by: chalky6666

I didnt get an error, it just flashed up the pc-phone communicating box but nothing comes down, are my images in the correct file "data" if I upload they go to recieved.

I didn't really try the GD88 with the software. I only used the cable to do firmware upgrade. Why don't you try to move the files to the Received folder and see if it helps??

Posted by: chalky6666

Which was going to be another Q, how do I know what firm ware I have and there is a newer version?

Posted by: kareshi

If you do a bit of search, i think *#9999# can check the current firmware. The latest one is A56 I think.

Posted by: chalky6666

Looks like i'm on A21, now what, where do I get 56 and what do i do with it when I get it.

I IMed you and no dice. As for the driver first, yeah I tried to run the setup and it ran; but the driver isn't the right one. When I plug in the phone/cable it looks for "New Hardware"; I tried all sorts of drivers, no luck.

Anyone help? It has to be the same packaging, different packaging = different manufacturer unfortunately.
