unlock SK2?

Hi,

Is there anyway we could unlock the sidekick 2 to be able to use it with another network ?

Thanks

I'm sure there is, but that other network would have to have a gateway to the danger server as well. Otherwise you would not be able to utilize any of the data services. I would guess that text messages and voice calls would still work fine.

With the Sidekick, having a GPRS connection is not enough -- it utilizes the Danger proxy server to format web pages, send and receive AIM messages, push email to your device, etc. As far as I know, T-Mobile is the only network that has a gateway to the Danger server at this time.

I asked danger about unlocking a sk2 and bringing it to canada for fido however they said its not possible

thanks Eric for answering to both my questions.
NOw I understand better what you meant.
I added the sidekick plan to my account.

Somehow I think it must be possible to use the browser and AIM with just the gprs connection, I think there must some paramater to set.

One of the reasons why the Sidekick is as cheap as it is, but does as much as it does, is that it does not have the powerful processor that exists in many Pocket PC's and other Smartphones. In the case of the Sidekick, most of the processing is actually done by Danger's server, and then the "prepared" data is then sent to the Sidekick to only be displayed by the device.

For example, the Sidekick web browser actually does very little. It sends the request to Danger's server. Danger's server actually goes out and retrieves the web page data, reformats it for the small screen, and then sends the finished product back to your Sidekick to be displayed. This is why the proxy server is needed. If the Sidekick were to actually have the processing power and ability to do all this itself, it would cost much more than it does -- It probably would be in the price range of the iPaq Pocket PC or a Treo.

well said!

hehe..

just a hint to those web devs out there..
i recommend using tables for sites that you want to be able to view on your sidekick,.

the danger proxies seem to handle reformating table based sites much easier, and also i recommend using percentages when specifying cell or row or table dimensions..
