Comprehensive MIDway Walkthrough/Guide

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: AnalogTiger

Ok guys & gals, here's my attempt at a MIDway walkthrough.

Note: MIDway is a Windows application used to transfer Java games and apps to Motorola GSM phones using a serial or USB data cable.

- This walkthrough makes several assumptions.

1. That you have a Motorola phone with the Java App Loader enabled in your Java Settings Menu.
(If not, then you need to STOP and use PST, or P2KMAN + seem editing to enable it)
Note: SEEM 0032_0001 - Offset 43 - Bit 0 value=1 to enable, 0 to disable)-->See HERE and HERE for more information.

2. You have a USB data cable designed specifically for Motorola phones and have successfully used it to connect to Motorola Phone tools, p2kman or PST. In other words, the USB drivers should be installed and working properly. (Serial cable users: This walkthrough was written specifically for USB cable owners but the steps to use MIDway with your cable are nearly identical)

3. You should be running Windows XP or 2000, and know how to use it. While the steps for older versions of Windows are VERY similar, I intend to have screenshots below & I do not have screens for those operating systems, but the similarities should be close enough for you to find the necessary information.

4. You have the MIDway program downloaded and ready to execute. (Version 2.8 in this case)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before beginning, your PC and phone should be powered on, and your data cable should be connected to your phone only, but
DO NOT , I REPEAT DO NOT connect the usb cable to the PC at this time. Only connect the larger end to the phone.

STEP 1:
On your phone press the Menu button, and navigate to Settings, then Java Settings, then highlight the Java App Loader option(should be at the top)
and select it. You should then see a screen that says Insert cable Now

Insert the other end of the USB cable into your pc now. After you do this, you should see a brief screen on the phone that says 'Jal link is active...',
then it should return back to the Java Settings Screen. If not, then you have USB driver issues that need to be resolved before proceeding.

STEP 2:
On your PC, open the control panel, then open the Phone and Modem options applet and click the Modems Tab at the top.

At this point your screen should look something like this:
.

IMPORTANT: Take note of the Com port number listed (COM 3 in this example). This information is also located in the device manager under
Motorola USB modem properties, Advanced tab, Advanced Port settings button.

Once you've made a note (mental or otherwise) of the com port number, close the control panel and the Phone & Modem options applet.

STEP 3:

At this point you should run the Midway program from wherever you have it stored on your particular pc.
Once opened, your screen should look like the one below:

.

Note: If you receive an error that states "Cannot open serial port! Would you like to change MIDway settings,"click 'YES' and skip ahead to STEP 5

STEP 4:

Click on File, then Settings as I did in the screen capture below.

STEP 5:

Once done that will bring you to the screen below:
At this point you should change the COM port to match what was listed earlier in the control panel.
Hopefully you remember it or wrote it down. In addition, the baud rate should be set to 115200 and the AT command
box should be left blank. Once you've confirmed these settings click the 'OK' button and move along to STEP 6:
.

STEP 6:

Click on the 'Open JAD' button on the program, circled in red below:

Browse to the location on your PC where you have your JAVA game or App stored. (MIDway is designed to only look for files
with an extension of .JAD, so if you only have files with a .JAR extention then you need a program such as jadmaker
or jadgen to make a JAD file in order for MIDway to recognize it )

Once you've highlighted the one you want to transfer to the phone, click on the Open button as shown below.

STEP 7:

Once you've done that, you will see the screen below, click on the 'Send JAD' button that's circled in red.

After you click this button, the screen on your PHONE should then change and show details on the game/app
you chose (Name, Size, Version & Vendor).
NOTE: If you receive a TIMED OUT error ,then verify your COM port is set correctly by returning to STEP 4

Assuming that the communications between the phone & pc are normal, your options at the bottom of the phone's screen
should be CANCEL or DOWNLD. Press Download and the transfer should begin.
This may take some time depending on the size of the game/app in question, but the phone should show a download progress meter.

Once the transfer is done you should see a screen that says "Download Complete", then another that says "installing.."

At this point, the game or app will either install successfully, fail or give an error message stating "Application installed but may have limited functionality"
In those cases the game should still run, but parts of game may not function, such as sound or the controls (This varies depending entirely on the game/app in question)

The phone should then prompt if you want to run the game/app or not.
If you DO, I recommend you close MIDway on the PC first, then disconnect the cable from phone & pc and enjoy your new game.

----------
Personal Note: For some bizarre & paranoid reason, I always feel the need to shut the phone off, and restart it at this point.
I probably have Microsoft to thank for this superstition, but restarting make me feel like everything is saved & configured properly and the universe is back in balance.
----------

If you choose not to play the game and select 'NO,' you can then select another game or app to transfer by going back to step STEP 6

I hope this walkthrough turns out to be useful for someone, because it took a long time and its WAY past my bedtime

Enjoy, Peace and keep the to a minimum.

Remember, we were all newbies at one point.

nice walkthrough! very detailed. hope it gets made a sticky, might help out all the noobs quite alot! good work

Posted by: AnalogTiger

Thanks. I spent quite a bit of time on it, so I hope it wasn't a pointless effort.

Incredible post! Helped me out a ton!

Posted by: GetAwayFromU

I know this to be true of the V80, but you can send Java Apps also through Bluetooth. You still the Data Cable though to activate Java Settings and Java App Loader. After doing that, open your Phone's Services in "My Bluetooth Places" and you can then simply drag (once paired) the JAR file to Motorola V80 OBEX Object Push. No need for the JAG file. Your phone will prompt you to accept the file and once done transferring, it will ask for you to install. I would recommend this for ONLY java apps that you know are compatible with your phone. No biggie if its not, the install will just fail. But what a pain.

Posted by: AnalogTiger

Quite right GetAwayFromU , people with bluetooth phones wouldn't need to bother with the MIDway program at all. Perhaps I should make a comprehensive bluetooth guide now.

Although I like prefer bluetooth, But this is a Great walkthrough use USB cable

This needs to be stickied and renamed "How to get games onto your Vxxx, Exxx phone."

Thank you for this tutorial!!!

Great guide, after numerous attempts with other guides at getting Midway to not Time Out, I finally got it to work using this guide.

Cheers

Posted by: motov511user

what an awesome guide! props to tiger.

question: on the v551, under java settings, i don't see the "java app loader"... could it be called something else or is that just it?

the reason i ask is because i've never done a seem edit, although i've been wanting to so desperately, but my p2kman does not detect the phone. MPT works great, so im not sure what exactly is the problem.

When I initially wrote up this guide, I made the assumption that anyone using MIDway would've already enabled the "java app loader" on their phone prior to starting the game/app upload process. At the time, I didn't want to bother including steps on how to enable it because the task at hand was already daunting enough.

In the near future, I plan to write up a new "SUPER" game guide that includes the above MIDway guide, an additional bluetooth OBEX game transfer guide, and also includes steps and pics on HOW to enable the java menu using the more popular apps such as PST, p2kseem, motorola-tool, MSS, etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the time being, i'm posting below just one of the many methods available to enable this java loader:

-I posted these steps in another thread to help someone get this option enabled, and thought it might be useful to add them to THIS thread since many people trying to use MIDway soon discover they have no java app loader option on their phone.

First of all, download the p2kseem program here and unrar (decompress) it.
(If the link is not active at some point in the future it will be up to you to locate it)

Once again, I must make one assumption, and that is that you've gotten p2kmanager to successfully connect to your phone. This program uses those same drivers as p2kmanager, but they are NOT included with the file I linked to above, so they should be installed prior to starting THIS process.

Once you've started this program, please follow the steps below.

1. Make sure phone reads as CONNECTED at the bottom left in the status bar.
2. At the the bottom right, under the LOAD section type in 0032 and 0001, then press the <Load from Phone> button

-----------------------------------------------
Important Note: As a precaution, after you initially load the 0032_0001 seem, or any other SEEM from the phone, you may want to save that to your PC for backup purposes in case you ever want to go back to the original, or in case you do something wrong during the edit.
After loading the SEEM, just click the <Save to File> button to save to your computer's hard drive.
-----------------------------------------------

3. In the main window, find and click offset 43 (It shows which is currently selected in the 'byte details" section below the main white window.)
4. Check the bit 0 box (the first one), then click the <Save to Phone> button

You should restart your phone at this point, and then check your java menu to see if java app loader is now available. Assuming you were successful, follow the MIDway guide located above.

See XLR8's SEEM Map for more goodies you can enable/disable.

thany you very much....thats the one thing i was missing..... works great now......
more fun with the v600 !

When I originally typed up this guide and said to connect the LARGER end first prior to Step 1,
I had the previous generation of Motorola phones in mind, so the cable I was referring to looked like this one:

---------------------------------------
Update : for users of phones with the mini-b usb connection (V3,180, v220, etc)

Owners of the mini usb phones should do the opposite and connect the smaller end first.
(This minor discrepancy was pointed out by another hofo reader , so if this caused some confusion for anyone, then I apologize! ) (NOT!! )

You guys are amazing.. i can't believe the wealth of knowledge that lies within here! .. Just got a v3 and am just unlocking things left and right now thanks to this site and the ppl here..

Starting with getting some cool games on there currently..

Thanks a bunch!!

I flexed my v400 to v600. After I reinstalled the games and tried to run them, my phone gave me an error message. They were all purchased from Cingular if that helps. Are games for v400 not compatable for v600? Thanks.

Analog Tiger - what a great walkthru! Thanks for all your hard work and time!

I wonder if you could help me out here... I get to the point where my phone's screen shows all the details as you say and the option to CANCEL or DOWNLD. When I press DOWNLD, I immediately get an error msg on my phone screen
"Invalid File"
"Failed"
Then it goes back to my Java Settings screen. On my Midway screen on my PC, I get [ok] for everything apart from the last line -
"Transmitting data blocks [00001] [Failed]"

Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong, or is it (as I hope) the game at fault, rather than my Phone/PC set-up?

Posted by: 420angel

I can get the Jad file on my phone, and download appears, but when I go to download the app, I recieve this message:
Opening JAD file.............[OK]
Connecting the phone.........[OK]
Transmitting data blocks.....[OK]
Completing transmission......[OK]

Opening JAR file.............[FAILED]

JAR downloading failed.

whats the deal, can anyone help???

Posted by: shyboywv

I have a question for anyone that can help.... I"ve only been able to get one game to download to my phone. I follow the guide exactly. It will actually go through the downloading process but when the downloading is complete I get the error message that it's not the right file type.

Posted by: turtlepwrz

hello,

i also having same issue.
running v300. after transfer game to fone shows installing...then it shows invalid file. after then the game is gone.

I have remade JAD files test other games from same company and still same problem.

The only change on the fone is that i DL a game from cell-carrier for mooola...can they be spyware...causing these games to be rejected?

Midway is fine does not say Invalid file or anything...its fone.

What can be this??
thank you

Posted by: sirfelix

I know Midway will upload games to my phone, but how do I get the games from my V180 back to my PC or from one V180 to another V180? Anyone?

Posted by: turtlepwrz

Hey,

All you gotta do is find a/the jad file, open it after copying to PC to see if that is ur game.....then copy.

this is wut i do now with saved games and high scores...copy the rms file, they will be j2meXX.jad etc.

first install is j2me0, second is j2me1, so on......find out by opening the jad file. copy to PC remember then rename.

goodluck.

Posted by: sirfelix

Whoa turtlepwrz, Slow down!

I haven't loaded Midway yet. Are you saying that Midway can view/copy files off the phone? If not what software are you using to do this?
Thx

Posted by: caront

Use p2kman (or one in its family).

You'll see the file structure, look for the files named j2me0.jar, j2me1.jar, etc. and download the one you want.

If you download the .jad, it will tell you what program is exactly - so you can verify. To do so, use the .jad in MIDway - the original name of the Java app/game should appear in the screen.

At least in my E398 the apps/games are numbered in the same order in which they are listed on the phone. But note that according to this rule the SECOND one in the list would be j2me1.jar, NOT j2me2.jar.

If you get both the j2meXX.jar and its .jad, and rename the former to whatever you want, just remember to create a new .jad. Or just use Bluetooth to transfer the .jar.

Hope this helps a little.
c.

OK, had some errors and I'll go over them here, but will say that I was successful in getting games off a Cingular V180 and loading them onto a T-Mobile V180.

Here goes... I installed PST 7.11 and the patch to enable the app loader, then I installed Midway and tested it with a game I already had on my PC. Worked well.

I then used a program called P2kmanPST to view the files on my T-Mobile V180 phone. Trying to download a file off my phone got me this error every other attempt: "UNSUPPORTED/INVALID PARAMETER FOR OPCODE Fail: cannot open file"
So I had to click download twice to get the save as window to pop up.

Once I got the jar and jad files on my PC I used Midway to check which was what. I got errors similar to:
Parsing error at line 10
Parsing error at line 11
Parsing error at line 12

So I switch to the Cingular V180 and downloaded all the games off it. Midway read these but when trying to load to the T-mobile V180 I got this:
Opening JAD file.............[OK]
Connecting the phone.........[OK]
Transmitting data blocks.....[OK]
Completing transmission......[OK]

Opening JAR file.............[FAILED]

JAR downloading failed.

Now, what I did next was weird. I had to rename the jar files and then use JADgen to make a jad file. Then everything loaded to the T-mobile fine.

Now questions:
1. Why did the T-mobile downloads give me Parsing errors and the Cingular downloads did not?
2. I noticed that the new games on my T-Mobile phone don't have unique icons. There were other game files listed other then the jad and jar files in the Cingular phone, should I have downloaded/uploaded those as well, what are they for?

Thanks to everyone for their help. To newbies: Sometimes these programs take time to load or appear or can take several tries to get stuff to work. Be patient.

Posted by: turtlepwrz

yo

i think the icons needs the png file.
now i saving only rms files for games saves.

with the downloaded games chk the jad file.

in my roger downloads i see jads have variables in them for vendor, sms-codes, delete-y-n, port;xxx, stuff thats just scary b/c they have roger in it etc.

i always use jadgen and get new jad for the jar files before uploading in to phone.

But, does anyone know how to change the java system heapsize?
I'd like to increase it.

I'm glad this guide has actually helped people. At this point however, I believe the p2ktools program has surpassed MIDway as the best method for installing games onto a moto. As a result of this fact, I won't be updating this thread any longer.

Your Welcome.

Posted by: caront

But note that in general, after deleting an app/game, the next time you load another one, it will take the same spot in the ordered list of apps/games as the one you just deleted. E.g. you have 5 and you delete the 3rd one; now only 4 are shown in the list. The next one you load will be inserted _again_ in the 3rd place, so that, so that apps that were initially in >=4th place, remain in the same position.
Suppose you have an app that you'd like to have in the first place in the list no matter how many games you put there, but currently is number 3 out of 3. I believe you can try to play with aaall the file names through p2kman or alike (can you do that with deBrander? - haven't got the time to explore yet, not much time lately). But a sure bet if you still keep the original .jar files (or you feel comfortable backing them up from the phone) is removing everything and re-installing in the SAME order you want them to show up. Sounds silly but that's life.
Probably deBrander allows you to do this more efficiently or there is some p2k soft that won't get you confused and will be quicker. I did this a looong time ago and didn't try alternatives.
Any addition on this, could probably help (such a link that I may have missed).
Cheers, c.

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Is it really that serious the order of the games in which they show .. HELL YEAH .... But hey im just a bored electronics guy who likes toys ....

Posted by: caront

I know, may sound dumb. But sometimes you want to open your Java, and just click once to launch your favourite "application"... For work, for instance...
Or one may have an OCD for Order. Probably I need to do yoga, to center myself, don't you think?

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

No .. It makes perfect sense .. Yur phone should be your way .

Posted by: Mr. Focker

Hello,

I read your guide and followed with it through but I'm getting problem.

This is what MIDway shows:

Opening JAD file.............[OK]
Connecting the phone.........[OK]
Transmitting data blocks.....[OK]
Completing transmission......[OK]

Opening JAR file.............[OK]
Connecting the phone.........[OK]
Transmitting data blocks.....[OK]
Completing transmission......[OK]

Downloading completed.

This is what happens on my phone after it reaches 100%:
"File Invalid"

Then it gets back to the Java Setting screen...

I'm confused. I used JADmaker to create the jad from the jar that I downloaded.

Thanks.

Posted by: turtlepwrz

Mr.Focker,

i had the same problem w/v300.

i tried everything b/c i think setup related.
This happen to file download from flashget JARs to same file.
One day I cleared my phone, re-did seems, everything=nothing worked.

I re-download the file by windows regular, save, click, etc and the file installed.

if not then it maybe not for your phone, but 100% then invalid file....i think file corrupt somewhere..just a bit.
terto

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Ok turtlepwrz and Mr Focker ... try using the old reliable program JaDgen to make your files .... Some times u have to go back to the oldies ...

Posted by: dariwari

thx for this great help!!

Posted by: Mr. Focker

thanks for the replies.

I found out that it wasn't my fault nor the softwares' fault. It was the file I downloaded. I downloaded different jar files from different places and did the exact process and it worked like a charm.

YAY, it worked for you. Glad to see you prove yourself correct with the guide's guide. For me I re-downloaded from the same place VIA other method.

I am also using JADgen.exe...I just make a temp DIR, and drag'n'drop the jar files on to JADgen.exe and here make jad. no need to open and input path.

I using - jadgen - p2kman -p2kseem -motoKIT -p2kcommander- PST 7.11-MPT 3.11 (can never upgrade ??)-XLR8's hexing file -motoTool-

I just went pretty fast through the forum here and I found alot of help...thanks, but I still get the timeout problem thing from Midway 2.8 after setting the proper COM ports...any suggestions...also the part that says..

On your phone press the Menu button, and navigate to Settings, then Java Settings, then highlight the Java App Loader option(should be at the top)
and select it. You should then see a screen that says Insert cable Now

I can't find that option so I never get that question ...any clue how to get it working here...thanks guys

I read your page...well :rolleyes2 most of it...impressive, and I got a whole bunch of programs off of it and I presume it will come in handy someday, but my questions is still the same, how can i get rid of the time expired thing i get with midway? is there anything direct and easier than 1000 word article...it's for a V551 moto by the way, not a V3 as most or all of the articles i read.

Posted by: AnalogTiger

amirnabilkamel, have you enabled the Java app loader menu on your phone? This menu option is not visible by default and has to be enabled first before MIDway will work. If you haven't enabled it, the MIDway program will NEVER work!

Back in Post #25 of this thread I gave directions on how to use the p2kseem program to enable it. The original download link for that program now appears to be dead, but it can also be downloaded from motomodders.net . That website also has the p2ktools program which I feel is an easier method of loading games than using the MIDway program. btw, the steps for enabling this menu on the v551 is exactly the same as the v3.

You can also buy a bluetooth dongle for your pc and then you can transfer the games wirelessly, and that method doesn't require a java app loader menu OR the midway program.

Posted by: amirnabilkamel

well I think what you say is good, but i get a windows protection error problem when i click load from phone after i input the values...i got another program called seemplayer..is this any good

under the vxxx seem i can see a function for the 0032_0001 at the top, can that do? if it can how can i do it from there

Thanks alot for your help you guys, i really appreciate it...

Amira...

Here is a tip u may like.

-Before u make changes to your phones seems/files have a copy of the ones u will be touching.
-Dont load directly from the phone.
-turn off AUTO LOCK, since u will reboot over and over.
-make a txt file w/notepad and save the original seem/file in a DIR(date_whatsdone).....in the txt file make a note of what u did/why

IE:
I use p2kman, and p2kseem. along w/ HoFo guides
-I make a DIR w/ name...(v300_datacounter) and place a txt of what is being changed/how/sometimes copy a section from guides.
-Use p2kman to copy all the seems, files from phone to PC
-Then ZIP that DIR up...so I can use the current files & zip as backup
-Use p2kseem (any seems app) to edit file copied, then save.
-Load back on to phone w/ p2kman.
-Files I delete from phone first b4 uploading the new file.

>Using MobiKIT 1.06, i make a backup of my entire phone (w/o games) every month. And use PST/MPT to backup contacts/datebook monthly.

hope this helps...i learn the hardway about keeping backup b4 modding.

I am currently running into a problem I have not had before. I have Java app loader on my phone and have installed games with it and midway up to now. I am currently having problems with getting games now on my phone. Now I am running into the problem of jar download failed. Java app loader runs fine, midway loads fine and I select download on my phone and then download failed comes up. Can anyone advise me on steps to take. I have rebooted my computer, shut the phone down and restarted, shut down midway and still nothing happens. Thanks.

Posted by: Lord Farkward

maybe the jad file is corrupted or that the game is just not compatible.

Posted by: shadow63

No these are games I have actually installed on my phone. I deleted them off to try others and now I am trying to put them back on. It is frustrating. I know my cable is good because my Mobile Phone Tools works great on putting wallpapers and ringtones on the phone.

Posted by: Lord Farkward

try the other method described in my n00b guide.

Posted by: shadow63

Ok and thanks for the advice

Posted by: StefanoPolo

has anyway got this walkthrough to work with a v710, because i seem to get an error in the widway screen when i try to send it to the phone

Posted by: AnalogTiger

I believe the last time I checked the V710 uses BREW games, not java games so MIDway and this entire guide doesn't apply to your phone, sorry.
Feel free to join the GSM universe when your current contract is up. Do you hear me now?!

thank you thank you.... was the easiest ever after reading your guide... the unplugging cable part was my error...

Your walkthrough was extremely helpful and very comprehensive, so thank you very much. I downloaded PST and Midway and got everything working on my phone. I connected my phone, had the right com ports, and then opened Midway. Then when I opened the .jad file had it sent to my phone, I clicked "download" All of a sudden the download failed. The message on Midway was that "Opening JAR file...... [FAILED]" and JAR downloading failed. Can you help explain to me what this means and how to fix this problem? Thank you so much! Feel free to e-mail me at my personal address:

Thank you.

That could mean several things. It could mean that the jad contains incorrect data, and you might need to recreate it using one of the jad tools such as jadgen or jadmaker. The game (jar) could be damaged/corrupt in some way. Is this happening on just one particular game/app? Have you tried installing others? and what phone model do you have?

Posted by: monkeyshare

Hi,

Could anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial/guide for editing java games? What I'm looking to do is edit the assigned keys from a game on my V551 so that it works properly on my GF's V505. Has anyone done this?

Posted by: StellaCaelum5

I have the Razr V3 phone. I was actually trying to download all the games from a CD that I purchased on ebay. The cd's full of all sorts of cool things to put on my phone. I found some of the files to download successfully, but then the windows are small and kind of hard to see and pan out across the whole screen. From what I noticed, when I open the game on Midway, if the "suite JAR file" says "[gamename].jar" it'll download. But if it looks like a hyperlink then it won't connect. So yeah. The CD came with like over 500 games on it, and I have 10 on my phone. So I guess I'm pretty set to go. But still, I'd like to know what's going on. Thanks!

Posted by: shadow63

This is a great guide and I have used it to enable my java apploader and use Midway. Now I seem to have run into a problem I have not encountered before. Up to this point I have never had any problems with my V551. I enabled java apploader, used PST, P2Kman, mobile phone tools and Midway without any problems. Yesterday I downloaded a game to my V551 and it installed without any problems. When I started to play the game my phone wanted me to power down and restart, which I did. When I went back to play the game it said the same thing. I knew I had powered down so I cleared the screen and proceeded to play the game. Which sucked by the way and I ended up deleting it off of the phone. Every since then I have had nothing but problems with any of the apps recognizing my phone. I have worked several hours trying to reinstall the usb drivers and reinstalling the apps and disenabling java apploader and then reenabling java apploader. As of right now my computer will recognize my V551. But my java apploader will not come up as jal link active or when it does it will not connect to midway, or it times out within a few seconds. The bells sound when I connect my phone to the comptuer so I know it recognizes it. The motorola modem shows under device manager. PST, P2kman do work. My mobile phone tools will not work and now it seems like my java apploader will not work. I have a laptop and desktop computer and mobile phone tools will not work on either of them and neither will midway. I am thinking of doing a master clear if that is my only option. But that is a last resort. Can anyone please advise me of any other options to try. I would greatly appreciate it.

I also have a V400 and my computer recognizes it and I have enabled java apploader with PST and mobile phone tools recognizes the phone. I had some problems first getting midway to work but it ended up finally working and I downloaded a game to the V400. I am just confused as to why now my V551 which I had no problems is now having problems with midway and java apploader.

As of right now nothing is working for the V551. This is what comes up.
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. The location of the device is shown in bold type (nothing is shown in the box). Recommendation: Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, replace the device.

Help will would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ok shadow ... Lets take this 1 step at a time ... When you connect yout v551 what shows in your hardware table ... ( start - control panel - system - hardware - device manager ) . Open that screen and then connect phone ... if you still get device not reconized restart phone and try from there if no good message back n we try something else mate ....

Posted by: shadow63

Nothing shows in the hardware table when I connect the V551. I have restarted the phone and reconnected...nothing, I have changed the different usb ports I use on the computer.....nothing. I get a pop up from the computer saying usb device not recognized and I click on it and it will not give any information. It is just so odd that all of a sudden I am having problems with the desktop and laptop computer reading my phone. I do not have a virus, checked that already. I thought that maybe something with the phone messed up the computer. But at the time all this happened I was using my laptop. Never had a problem out of it up till then. Thanks for your help.

The jar file may be damaged. Have you tried to install others, and if so, do you get the same error on all of them?

Almost sounds as if you modded your cell and your mahchine doesnt wish to reconize it . Unless you are using incorrect cable or cable is bad. Those are the only situations I have seen that error message under.

Remember, we were all newbies at one point.

i did every thing according to the tutorial got the java enabled after a whole day then when i start the MIDway_2_8 the jads load but its keeps saying Opening JAD file.............[OK]
Connecting the phone.........[TIMER EXPIRED]

Downloading canceled. i checked my drivers okay its the right com port restarted im really stuck i have motorola v3 razor but i cant get games on it helpp??

Open up bluetooth, click view near by devices (i do not know the exact step, im not on a bluetooth capable computer right now) when it picks up your phone highlight it, (click on it once) then there should be and options tab on the left side that reads "View available services" or "Discover Services".

One your computer finiiales the services available on your phone, Drag and Drop the file onto your Obex icon. Please watch your phone to see if it asks you to accept the transfer

:-p
Good luck

for the Razor ANY Mini Usb cable will work fine. They usually come with a Digicamera or most electronic devices (Mps players)

Or you can go down to the shaq (Radioshack) and get one :-D

When you connect your phone to the computer, MPT will install the Modem Driver. (i think thats what its called) To Check, attach your phone to the PC and install any drivers it asks for it should only ask for the Modem Driver. After it has installed Click Start->My Computer, right click Manage, go to Manage. Then to Device Manager. Look and check if your Phone is listed.

If it is, open P2ktools. When you open p2ktools your computer will start to try to connect to the phone, and will begin to ask you for all the drivers.
Click the option that allows you to select the location of the drivers.

(as you said you have downloaded the drivers)

direct the wizard into the folder you have saved the drivers in. Then click Next and install all the neccasry drivers.

After you installed all drivers, close p2ktools, and reopen it, it should correctly connect to your phone. Though the bottom left hand corner might still say "disconnected" as long as the "light" is green you are connected.

Hope that helps.
(btw does any one know how to change out user names or do we have to make a new account?)

The problem I run into with using midway is that when i get to the app loader part in my phone it says to plug in the cable, well when i plug in my cable it changes the ring style to LOUD as opposed to Vibe and ring. It doesnt just change it once though it changes to loud then it says that it is connected and then it changes the profile to LOUD again and that forces the phone to get out of the Java app loader... Any ideas guys of what i could do to fix that?

GREAT tutorial! Much better than another (though pretty similar) one I found elsewhere.

My problem is, with a lot of the games I have, I either get on my phone screen:

Failed
Invalid File

or when MIDway goes to open the .jar file it fails out.

Other games install beautifully.

Are there any tools to troubleshoot such issues? I know my way around java quite well, so I figured out that the message I get on my phone screen saying "Invalid File" is simply cause the .jar file doesn't have a manifest (why would someone package a jar without one?). As far as MIDway not being able to open .jar files, you've got me stumped.

Anything to solve each problem? I've got some great games here I'd love to get up and running, but my phone and/or software are hating all over them.

Once again, great tut, and thanks to anyone who offers up some help.

BTW: This is on a Pink RAZR V3 (not V3c, i, x, etc, just plain ole' boring V3).

All games dont work on all phones. Also a jar creator you can try and change a game from 1 phone type to another. A simple program that works fine is JADgen.

I have a RAZR v3... I am trying to enable JAVA APP LOADER in seem SEEM 0032_0001 but I have no Offset 43.... I am a little lost...

Posted by: sremick

Having used several ways to load games, including MIDway and P2Ktools, I'd like to re-emphasize to people reading this thread that the P2Ktools method is far easier and less-prone to issues than using MIDway. You should consider this thread to be dated information, now superseded by better methods.

hi good ppl can ne help me 2 put game son me phone by using bluetooth and where can i download the games 4 free

Posted by: bodobiya

hi, thanks a lot for such a great write up! its awsome!
i have a realli big issue though, where can i get MIDAY from?! thanks guys...
also in order to enable the java loader, as directed,
Quote:
1. That you have a Motorola phone with the Java App Loader enabled in your Java Settings Menu.
(If not, then you need to STOP and use PST, or P2KMAN + seem editing to enable it)
Note: SEEM 0032_0001 - Offset 43 - Bit 0 value=1 to enable, 0 to disable)-->See HERE and HERE for more information.
i would need to have Bytes (h) and record for offset 43. Could somebody please give me the bytes and record?! its realli appreciated!

i thought P2K was used to do the seem editings, all you could pretty much do with it is changing the codes around, how can you load games?! thats interesting... specially since i know how to use that and not the MIDWAY.

i would like for someone to tell me in detail how to transfer applications from the pc to my v3i motorola razr. please need help. reply to tommieboy_chick@hotmail.com

Hi all,

i've been developing applications for j2me enabled phones and found Midway "debug log" feature amazing.

I've used it for the V550 Motorola's phone, but now im using a Nokia 6230.

Does Midway work for cell phones other than Motorola (i've tried a bit without result)? Or does anyone know if there is a similar application for the Nokia's phones?

thanks in advance.

Posted by: ekbk2000

I have a bluetooth dongle but no cable and like to transfer games to my a630. Is there easy guide to do this or any good links that explain? When I coonect phone with bluetooth dongle, I only see 2 folders(audio and pictures)
Please advice. Thanks in advance

It's me again. I recently had replaced my phone and again I am having trouble connecting to p2kman of P2kTools. The modem is listed in the device manager. Do I need to set my phonea certain way? I have tried with my conenction set to 'Data/fax connection' and 'Memory Card'. Nothing seems to work.

It keeps saying "[TIMER EXPIRED]" in Midway, and I've done everything correct. I've remade the JAD files a few times too. I'm trying to add Metal Slug and Counter Strike.

What's wrong?

Posted by: .user.

Hmm my bad. I think I just needed to restart computer for drivers to be completely installed so Midway would work correctly.

BTW, an easier way to unlock "Java App Loader" which I used is:
Quote:
Opcode to enable java uploader function.

This one credit to member Sirios

Press "Menu"-key and IMMEDIATELY type 048263*

You will see some requests to enter data:

Opcode- enter 47 and press OK
Field1- 50
Field2- 1
Field3- 67
Field4- 1
Field5(D)- 247

After that on display will appear Results F1:0

Re boot your fone and it's done

p2k is a lot easier ..... But you must have it running correctly and reconizing phone in p2k-mode. then you click kjava ... next click refresh to see whats already installed. Now you click install and direct program to your directory with game you plan to install. Once finish restart the phone. Now thats easiest way to install apps.

I've been using Midway to install Java apps to my Motorola PEBL. It's straightforward and easy to setup. The only annoying part for me is having to disconnect and reconnect the USB cable when establishing the connection to Midway using the Java App Loader on the phone. Apart from that, no problems with Midway. However, I envy my friend's SE k750i ease of copying a J2ME jar file into the phone using infrared and the application is installed.

As stated many times in this thread already, using MIDway is one of the harder ways to put Java apps/games on your phone. It was long-ago surpassed by various other methods available now, such as P2KTools and bluetooth.

This thread needs to die. It should be closed. The fact that people keep posting to it is just proof that its persistent activeness is giving a false-message to newbies that MIDway is the best/standard method. It is not. This thread is simply outdated and like a bad rash won't go away.

p2k didn't even work for me. But you're right because MIDway ****ed up my phone tools and now I can't access my phone with Phone Tools.

Do me a favor ....
1.) Make sure phone is diconnected from computer
2.) Turn phone off and then back on
3.) Verify that your cable had no bubbles or bulbs in it
4.) If it does pPLEASE get a different cable before you continue.
5.) Reboot Machine
6.) Once machine is up open SYSTEM ( I hope you can do that)
7.) Goto HARDWARE
8.) Goto Device Manager
9.) Connect phone and watch Device Manager Screen Open up
10.) Did you get either a Modem or a Motorola Device added ?????
11.) Dont respond until all those stpes are done...
