MPX220 a Cingular Only deal.

I just talked to the AT&T Store Manager here at the Denver location and she informed me that the MPX220 is a Cingular Only phone, and that AT&T WILL NOT have it untill after the merger in November.

This is a real bummer. I hope it's not true, but it really sounds that way.

××××.

If anyone can corrrect me on this please do so as I would love to have this phone.

I can assure you this is incorrect. If you look at the product lineup we have accumulated over the last few months, each product with the exception of the OGO is in line with Cingular's product lineup. The merger is still thick as mud, so there is definately no concrete merger date. Secondly, they have not even begun to figure out how the operability between the two wireless giants will work. All of that is going to happen after the clean room is all worked out and the FCC approves.

Maybe they will have some of the issues that have been mentioned in this forum resolved by then. This may not be a bad thing after all

For now, my MPx200 is working just fine!

If that's the case, then why would Motorola's website list ATTWS as the launch carrier for the bluetooth promo? My rep also said it would be out "shortly".

I was told that the merger wouldn't be complete until early 2005 at best!

My friends still have their jobs at AT&T till November I believe.

The only problem is that the Bluetooth Promo expires on October 29th so us AT&T folks may be out of luck!

My Girlfriend works at ATTWS and told me that the MPX220 will be on sale at her store on Nov. 3rd.
Sucks if you want to take Motorola up on the free Bluetooth headset offer.

In looking at the promotion email and the experience from the V710.....it will be available on-line thru ATT before the end of the month.

This is not gospel but why would the screw over ATT when Cingular is not even listed as a vendor on that corp email?

It just does not make sense.......

That is a very good point!

Yep, I know. I dont know why they would list the promo as AT&T and then do a Cingular Only delivery, it makes no sense. But when have you known Motorolla and AT&T to make sense... Guess it is just wait and see. Will be keeping my eyes on the boards here.

I agree too. I don't understand why Motorola would be blasting out emails to thousands with ATTWS logo pasted on it saying it will be here real soon. If it was 'Cingular only' why doesn't Motorola say Motorola/Cingular?

This whole MPX220 scenario follow exactly the roll-out of the V710.

Moto posted through email (just as they did now) that the phone will be available on-line at Verizon and it also gave the exclusive to Radio Shack as a vendor before the corp Verizon stores got it.

I know this is alittle different in that there are 2 providers that are in question but the pattern is very similar.

I can pretty much safely say that ATT will have this phone available on-line and most likely in the corp stores by the end of the month. Motorola is notorious for slow roll-outs but they have yet to shoot themselves in the foot with a published announcement and not come through.

Then again....what do I know?....I am just a Smartphone junkie waiting for my latest fix

The bluetooth promo doesn't expire on the 29th. It says it expires on the 29th or until the first 1000 headsets are awarded.

My AT&T rep talked to the Moto rep today and gave me an answer of "sometime this month".

I am thinking the Nov. 3rd date is reasonable.

I'm a T-mobile user now so I'm not familiar with Cingular or ATT. What is the big difference on whether people sign-up for the cingular phones sold via BB now or wait for the ATt released phones? Since both will be the same company in a month or 2.

I figured I will sign-up for the cingular phones via BB and since I get a ATT corp discount via my job I will get some type of dicsount when the join.

I called a rep. they told me that new phones released will have a 66mhz chip installated instead of the 33mhz chip so the phones will work on both networks ( ATT & Cingular). She figured that the new phones being released now will have the newer chip and will not have any problems during the network merger..

Not sure about the 66 vs 33mhz thing but the quad band is the key thing to determine the coverage area. I could be wrong but I thought T-MO, ATTWS and Cingular had roaming agreements so that shouldn't be an issue.

I guess this may vary from person to person.

For me, I want to wait until ATT releases the MPX220 for the following reasons.

- I am already an ATT customer and I will not be activating a new line.
- I don't want to pay $350 + $150 (no activation) for the phone when I can get it cheaper from ATT. My ATT price should be much lower since I get a company discount and the phone will be locked to ATT. If the price isn't lower, customers would simply buy the unlocked BB version.
- The ATT phone may have a different ROM potentially fixing problems that some people are reporting. Of course it could be the exact opposite as well...
- If I buy it from ATT, I will have 30 days to evaluate the phone. If I don't like it, it can be returned with no questions asked.

Whether the phone will work on Cingular and ATT isn't really an issue. The Cingular phone is unlocked and will work on both networks right out of the box. The ATT phone will be locked to ATT, but will work with Cingular after the merger.
