se 44 slider - VERY poor reception?

i recently purchased a kyocera se 44 slider. nice phone, but since i live on the fringe of cell coverage, i decided to try an external antenna for my car. i went to my cell retailer and picked up the antenna they suggested (3db passive gain, which had the "correct" connector). i plugged it in and was happy to see nearly full signal everywhere i went after that. the problem arose after unplugging the antenna. now, when i'm only using the phones internal antenna, i now have trouble getting 1 - 2 bars of service in areas wherei used to have full signal strength at all times (very near the cell tower). and worse yet, in areas where i had say 3 - 4 bars before, my phone is SEARCHING... this is extremely frustrating, as i cannot always have the external antenna plugged in. is there anything i can do to fix this problem, or am i completely hosed? any suggestions/help would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks.
