HELP!!! GD55 doesn't "have service"!!!

Hi everyone...
My friend just sent me a Panasonic GD55 phone from China. I tried it with a Rogers sim card and the screen shows it is searching for service, but after a while, it shows "NO SERVICE". I am going to try Fido today... But what if Fido doesn't work either??? 
Is there something wrong with my phone? Or do I have to switch the band or something??? (because it is from China to Canada...)

did u change the band from 900/1800 to 1900?

change the band and it should be fine. I don't think the phone was on the 1900 network since it would have been pointless. they would get "no sevice" over there.
