So today I went to that digitallife thing in the city, walkin around i looked on the floor and found this phone (Audiovox SMT 5600) the smart phone for AT&T, i believe its some sort or test model when i power the phone on it says " TEST ONLY NOT FOR SALE" with the numbers 1.0.40.7. Now it is possible to use this phone? I'd like to give it to my g/f she has verizonwireless... I see verizon uses audiovox phone, so maybe the phone just needs some software update? I did a search and couldnt find any real answers... sorry for the long post.

Verizon uses CDMA technology. The SMT 5600 is a GSM phone.

So, it will not work with Verizon service anytime in the near future. Maybe by 2007.

Want to sell it? PM me.

This is probably the hottest phone out there right now...so definitely NOT worthless. Sell it to the poster or put it on E-Bay. You should get a pretty good price, I would think. I got one last week from Orange in Europe, and love it, though the US service plan (ATT Wireless) seem to suck.

the European c500 has the 900 band instead of the 850 band...and if you cant use the 800 band on attws...its bound to suck...its not att's fault.

fduvall, where in Europe did you buy it and was it unlocked ?
I have family there, they may buy me one if I am able to use it here in the US.

Thanks in advance.

You found it on the floor floor, like someone had dropped it or lost it?

You may be able to sell it but whoever buys it will clearly see it's a protoype and not production. Further, whoever dropped it/lost it can report it stolen (the IMEI) to ATTWS and you'll have a hard time activating it...

I was at the DigitalLife expo too and I know they weren't selling anything so you didn't buy it...also there was no Audiovox or ATTWireless booth either so I'm almost sure this belongs to someone.

I didn't say I bought it, if you read what I posted I said I found it on the floor near att's display...I guess someone tried to rip it off or whatever the case is. There is no SIM in this phone, and it says FOR TEST USE ONLY when its powered on. I chatted with ATT rep on attwireless.com and she told me the phone just needs to be reconfigured, she said it was demo model. No the phone doesn't belong to anyone cause there was no contacts or anything like that besides there was no SIM and it says FOR TEST USE ONLY as I stated earlier. I'll be selling it for $200 firm if not ill just get it reconfigured then buy the charger and hold it down.

Orange UK has set me up with 30 days of free service, so I have been roaming for the past two weeks in France and the US. I have been connected to Cingular and AT&T Wireless here in San Francisco, so everything seems to be working ok. Is there something that I should be aware of if I activate this phone on a US carrier next month? I understand that AT&T Wireless is the only US carrier currently selling the phone, but will that matter to me if I already own the US model? I travel to Europe a lot, so I need a GSM phone. I currently use Sprint, but can't use the CDMA phones abroad. Wondering if anyone has any answers or advice. Cheers,

FDuvall

You're just limited in the states because you are missing the 850mhz band that most of AT&T Wireless is on in the states but they also have 1900mhz towers as well so that would be why you still get signal... just don't get locked inside a brick building or in a basement and you should be fine on the 1.9ghz band...

Apparently we can't unlock the SMT 5600 yet. Keep checking http://www.c500-unlock.com/ for updates. They should crack it in the next few weeks (I hope).
