Audiovox 8900 drivers for mac

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Forgive me if this question has already been asked...
(I've tried doing a search on this, but I cann't find anything on this)

I have an audiovox 8900 phone, from verizon, and a couple months ago, I bought the data cable and software from one of the verizon stores. I was using my phone as a modem for my desktop PC.

Let's fast forward to yesterday...
I went out and bought an imac, which is pretty ×××× cool!
But besides all that, I have the data cable, but not the software. (Which I think was for Windows anyways)

So, my question is:
- Where can I get drivers for my mac to use my 8900 as a modem.
(I don't wanna get a highspeed connection until we move out of our apartment in a couple months)

- Also, does anyone else have the software that came with the "verizon" data cable, did they have software (drivers) for both PC and mac???? (For I'm still looking for the "flip'n thing").

Thank you for all the help you can give me!!!!

Keith

Thanks CBUD for replying back and sending me the email with the driver. That was really cool of ya!!!! I tried it, and for some reason it didn't work for me. I'm sure it was error on my end. Thank you again!!!!

I did find some other instructions on a Yahoo Group called maccellphone. After following the instructions, I'm happy to report, it was successful!!! YEAH!
---------------------------------------------------------------
Just a note to let everyone know that I have been successful doing a
QNC connection (14.4 kbps) with my
Audiovox CDM-8900 from Verizon.

Here's the process I used:

1. I downloaded the Verizon STD driver from:
Verizon_Wireless_STD_Driver.hqx>

***NOTE***: (Hey, this is Kieferdaman again! LOL! I tried the above link and it appears that Verizon took the driver off the website. Here's another place to get the driver: http://homepage.mac.com/jrc/contrib/mobile_office/
Once you click onto the website, look for Verizon_Wireless_STD-Driver and click on the part that says "(mirror)"... that will give you the driver!!!)

2. I moved this file "Verizon_Wireless_STD_Driver" into /Library/Modem
Scripts

3. I edited the file with BBEdit, adding the following after line 58:

write "AT$qcmdr=2\13"

This is the next line following "write "AT&FS7=90\13""

To be able to edit the file, I had to get info on the
"Verizon_Wireless_STD_Driver" file, then change the
Open with... application to BBEdit (or your favorite text editor, such
as TextEdit).

If you don't do this step, the phone will default to trying a high
speed connection, and unless your
account with Verizon is authorized for this, you'll get an
"Authentication Failed" message back from
Internet Connect.

BTW, I didn't figure this out by myself, but with help from a very
nice Verizon data support tech.
Even mentioning that I was using Mac OS X didn't stop him; he just
said he wasn't sure how to edit
the modem string on the Mac, but happily provided it to me and waited
patiently as I edited the file
and did my first connection. Thanks to Mike ?? in Verizon's data
support group!

4. Connect the phone to my PowerBook (Pismo) with the Verizon-supplied
($35) USB cable, which is
part of the standard Mobile Office Kit, which provides Windows-only
drivers and applications.

5. Open System Preferences->Network Preferences.

You'll probably get a message recognizing the new port. Just ignore it
for now. It'll automatically
create the port and call it "Curitel Communication Inc." I renamed it
to "Audiovox 8900", but this
isn't necessary.

6. I created a new location called "Verizon QNC", and turned off all
ports except the one that was
automatically created, which I had renamed.

7. In the PPP configuration, I entered "qnc" as the Account Name, "qnc"
as the Password, and "#777"
as the Telephone Number (all without the quotes).

8. On the Modem tab of the Network Preferences, choose the
"Verizon_Wireless_STD_Driver", which
is the one you've edited in step 3, above.

9. Click Apply Now to save the configuration.

10. Click the PPP tab, and then the "Dial Now..." button to launch
Internet Connect.

11. Click the Connect button in Internet Connect and you should see
your phone indicate that
it's dialing #777, and a few moments later, you'll see that it's
connected with RX and TX
speeds of 14.4 kbps, and that it's a "QNC Data Call".

Once you've gotten to this point, you're on the Internet, and can use
any TCP/IP application as usual, albeit relatively slow on the
performance scale. BTW, this is from Allentown, PA, which is a Verizon
1X network.
Also, I've confirmed that these data calls count as regular calls on my
plan, which of course means it's
"free" on nights and weekends.

Oh, regarding the Audiovox CDM-8900, so far I'm very pleased with the
phone's features and sound quality. I have not found a way to exchange
Address Book data with the phone via iSync or any other tool. The
BitPim site expressly warns against using BitPim with the Audiovox
CDM-8900, stating it can cause the phone to become inoperable!

Hope this helps someone.

All the best,

Bobby Roe

Hey nuke_this,

You want the Verizon_Wireless_STD_Driver.

This is from step 1 of the instructions:
.......Here's another place to get the driver: http://homepage.mac.com/jrc/contrib/mobile_office/
Once you click onto the website, look for Verizon_Wireless_STD-Driver and click on the part that says "(mirror)"... that will give you the driver!!!........

Then you want to edit the Verizon_Wireless_STD_Driver and that should do it.

Let me know,
kieferdaman@yahoo.com

Keith

P.S. I don't this email account all the time, so I should hopefully get back to ya in a timely manner!!! LATER!
