Audiovox 8910: How to upload ringtones the easy way!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Snuff

What you need:
- A data cable to your PC futuredial.com or radioshack.com
- USB Drivers For The Cable - prolific drivers
- BitPim - bitpim.sourceforge.net
- Verizon Wireless service (May work on others?)

Connect to BitPim
First, connect your USB cable to your computer, making sure that your system has recognized it. (This is a very important step...if your computer does not recognize a connection with your phone, neither will BitPim!) If your computer is not recognizing your phone/new device, try shutting off any syncing sofware you may be running... i.e. ActiveSync, etc... If that doesn't work, try re-installing the USB drivers and reboot.

After getting the settings the way you like, click on the "Filesystem" tab. From there, you should see a "+" next to a "/" underneath "Name". Click on the "+" and wait... If you have to wait more than a minute, or you receive an error message, your phone is not properly configured, or not compatible. Try starting at the beginning of this tutorial again. If the "+" turns into a "-" and you see a directory tree, you have successfully connected to BitPim....CONGRATULATIONS!!

Put the ringtones on the phone:
1. Navigate to user\sound\ringer.
2. Right-Click the 'ringer' node and select New File.
3. Select a .MID, .MP3, or .QCP file in the "Select a file" dialog box.
4. Click Open
5. Repeat steps 2-4 for all files you want to upload.
You are done with BitPim

Make your phone see the files:
Go to your phone's main screen.
Press:
Menu> 4 Get it now>1 Get it now>CLR
(Your phone just created the download_snd.txt file!)
CLR> 6 Media Gallery>3 Tones

There they are!

-Snuff

** Thanks cuwmb2 for text from his post in Tutorials For 8900!!
** Thanks nanotube for pointing out that it generates a download_snd.txt file after you visit GIN!

Posted by: Snuff

Another tip:
If you want to use a voice memo as a ringtone:

Record the ringtone
Menu>8>1>1>1

In bitpim, navigate to:
VoiceDB\All\Memos

Right-Click the Mem00001.qcp file and save it to your hard drive.

Now upload it to:
user\sound\ringer

Follow the steps above under "Make your phone see the files"

The next thing I wonder is:

Will it generate files for the Pix and Animations?

I dont know what folder they are supposed to be stored in.

Now I really am starting to feel like a computer moron ... I don't understand why anything I upload to the phone, be it MP3 or MIDI, either does not play on the phone, or gives me an odd chime sound. It's starting to frustrate me. The only file I was able to upload to the phone and have actually WORK was a 4+ minute downloaded MIDI file, and it was a ringer I most definitely didn't want, one I was just experimenting with. Perhaps I am in need of a "Sound files for dummies"? I'm really thinking of just giving it up and recording everything through the speaker as a voice memo, no matter *how* bad it sound ...

... there's a workaround for everything... I'm struggling a bit too but it won't be long before one of us here hammers this out...

here's to the cause...

AmbientBlu, this is EXACTLY what I was experiencing on the [3] 8910s I have... using BitPim, it wasn't until I used QPST when these problems subsided...

..from an earlier post: "- I too have toyed around with BitPim, BrewSky, and XVI32 and was somewhat able to x-fer .mid files [as well as having them show up on the phone] but oddly enough, the ringtone would only play just the FIRST note of the file... [even though the entire file[s] contents would x-fer...that is, until I came across QPST from QualComm... "

Snuff, thanks, but it wasn't really a "find", it was more like a "stumble across"... still working on pix, wallpaper, contacts, etc.

kind regards and ok a few head scratches,

could one of yous in this forum with a vox8910 please tell me what your ip address is for the virginXL

if you need the the code proxy thing try typing in ##77699 end (red button) please tell me this could tell me wether or not you can get WAP

Posted by: thepindoctor

OKay i know that the file system is almost the same as the 8610, me and any guy were able to get ringtones on it but not wallpaper, i used a serial data cable which i still have, but i am wondering if it will work for the 8910, i would think so, but who knows. As for the wallpaper i tried number of ways with hex editing and putting the wallpaper in different folders but nothing happened..
But what about games does the phone use java games or brew games?

Posted by: Wetta3217

thx you people i was able to get new ringtones on the phone but the ringtones are only 30 secs, am i doing anything wrong or is that the max for this phone? or do i have to go into some secret menu or something?

thx

Posted by: Snuff

Somewhere around 20 seconds is the max. Anything beyond that is wasted space on the phone.

Posted by: GH3TT0 PH0N3

Alright, i just got the 8910 from Virgin Mobile, and i can access the phone from bitPim, but there is no user\sound\ringer directory on the phone, HOWEVER; there is a MYRINGTONES directory, which baffles me to no end (screenshot below). anyone have any clue how to upload the ringtones through this phone??

Posted by: GH3TT0 PH0N3

BTW, the ##776699 (end) does not work on the 8910! might be another way to find the proxy, but i haven't found anything yet.

Posted by: Nacron

OMG...this should be stickied...I tried using the 8900 method on an 8910 and got a bunch of weird tones insted of the midi i uploaded because of the txt file.

Posted by: zschank

for 8910 phone, everything seems pretty jake, but then, well, when retrieving, it becomes much, much less than jake.

Basically, it will not load the directories, even after about 20 minutes. Should I use a different phone type setting than the LG-VX4400 or no?

here is the protocol log if it helps:

13:07:34.006 COM4: Opening port COM4, 115200 baud, timeout 3.000000, hardwareflow 0, softwareflow 0
13:07:34.006 COM4: Open of comm port suceeded
13:07:34.016 LG-TM520/VX10: Attempting to contact phone
13:07:34.016 LG-TM520/VX10: Listing dir ''
13:07:34.016 LG-TM520/VX10: brew request Data - 2 bytes
<#! p_brew.memoryconfigrequest !#>
00000000 59 0c Y.

Other notes:

Using a usb port off a USB 4 port hub. Port for phone is COM4
Curitel drivers and cable (WDM/COM4)

the port, modem, and USB composite ports all are working properly and with correct drivers (finally).

Thanks to anyone who knows whats going on.

Posted by: Nacron

i chose the vx6000, the 7000 wasn't connecting for me.

nope, still nothin

Posted by: markkm

I to have a bell 8910. I downloaded from the internet a ringtone it seems to have put it in the M dir , there is three new files there called 10.dat,10.gcd,and 10.url . I saved the 10.dat to my pc with bitpim changed it to 10.mid and there it was the ringtone i downloaded. so i tryed to upload one from my pc no luck. changed the .mid to .dat the phone did't see it. any help would be great. my file system is the same as mau108.

Posted by: mrwh1te

I heard downloading and uploading from bell phones were disablled. Has anyone ever had succes using a 8910 with bell?

Posted by: mau108

I tried uplaoding an mp3 to the phone making user/sounds/ringtone folder but that didnt work...

The thing is when I goto Get New button it doesnt create a download_snd.txt file .. it just goes to the browser and when I hit cancel it goes back to the main screen.

hey markkm, would you mind expanding your whole directory structure so I can see what was difference between yours and mine as you have downlaoded a ringtone, I cant at the moment as I dont have wap service and bells system is down (their tech support system).

Please post a screen shot of your fully expanded directory structure.

Posted by: markkm

what the hell we do with this info, I have nooooooooo clue!

Posted by: mau108

ok guys, i got the i upped into my phone renamed as 10.dat and overwrote the 10.dat that was already there...

I then went into the 10.gcd and 10.url and the other file and changed the filesize accordingly...

It now plays the mp3 perfectly in downloads, but when I go into ringer setup or I call from a phone my phone restarts saying User data being restored [7] or something like that...

Posted by: markkm

[IMG][/IMG]

Posted by: markkm

I did something the same to my sons 8900 and its doing that to saying User data being restored [7] phone restarts let me know how you get along with it.

The LG VX-6000 cable will work with the Audiovox CDM-8910...still working on the 9900...more as that develops.

Ok so ive gotten the ringers to transfer TO the phone.....
Now how do I do this???

Make your phone see the files:
Go to your phone's main screen.
Press:
Menu> 4 Get it now>1 Get it now>CLR
(Your phone just created the download_snd.txt file!)
CLR> 6 Media Gallery>3 Tones

When I go through these steps I end up in camera mode and then in screensavers? Im not quite understanding the "get it now".......

Posted by: Snuff

My guess is that you do not have service with Verizon.

Get It Now is a service on the phone from Verizon.

-Snuff

Posted by: stillerrf

that answers my question.....

Now I will have to figure it out all on my own.....

Posted by: midtownboarder

ok, i have an audiovox 8910 and i followed all the directions to get the tones on my phone. they show up in the my media folder but it says i can't assign them. so i can't actually use them as a ringtone. so if anyone has any info on what to do that would be great.

Sorry about that, I thought people might have been able to find my thread about this subject. Anyways, you can find it Here http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=512938 keep in mind that tweaking the Virgin Mobile 8910 CAN be fatal to the phone! so don't try to tweak the phone other than what's advised in the thread.

Posted by: DownSouth

I have the same issue as midtown..... I put the new ring tone in the ringtone folder but the only place i can see it on the phone menu is under Media Gallery.... under tones but it will not allow me to assign it to anything. The folder structure is different from the bellsouth and verizon structures listed here so I'm stuck for the mement.

[edit]
I have 2 8910 phones and the one I used to download a ringtone from alltel with I cant even see the tone I manually installed into the ringer folder....on the other phone (no downloads via phone) I can see the manually installed tone on the media gallery page but it wont activate it.

Posted by: DownSouth

Ok got it now....I had gone to access apps on my phone and not on the wifes....you get an error message when you back out of that but thats ok.
You can then see the tone under media gallery and assign it to a ring tone under settings.

Now to work on wallpapers )

Posted by: midtownboarder

glad you got it. yeah i haven't been able to figure out wallpapers yet but i'm working on it.

Posted by: DownSouth

Might have to download one from the alltel apps and see what files change.

Got Bitpim to get the filesystem of my phone using the info from page one of this thread using a radioshack cable (#170-0792) and the prolific drivers for XP, all I did was right click on the inf file and select install before plugging in the cable, or you can plug the cable in and manually select the driver from the directory you unzipped the files into.

Current Bitpim version im running is 0.7-test8 with settings for LG-VX6000 and Com Port set to auto.

I decided to mirror the prolific drivers and a rar of my phones root here.

Since this is a brand new phone i just purchased today the root is pristine.

I did snap one pic which I found under brew>shared>jpeg and successfully saved it to my desktop.

All I need to do is figure out where ringtones would be saved to. Perhaps under user>sound>ringer, but havent tried yet.

I just noticed I did this while the phone is on and folded shut.

Posted by: emc2serv

The Cricket 8910 ringtone install is the same as Verison but instead of being called "Get it now" Cricket calls it "Cricket clicks" and the menu number for Media Gallery is 5 on the phone.

I timed the ringtone play length at exactly 22 seconds.

I'll try the other Verison file install methods hopefully today and report on how they work and any differences.

Cheers!

HELP!!

I have just got my first phone from Verizon, an audiovox 8910. I just got my cable from EBAY and am having trouble with drivers and bitpim

I cannot install the prolific drivers. It just says 'not compatible with hardware and will not automatically find them when extracted.

I found some Curitel drivers from google and they installed via windows detection, but I cannot access the phone with bitpim. It just sits there when I try to access the directory.

what can I try?

do I have the wrong cable?

Make sure you have the earlier version of bitpim, the beta version, and it will allow you to choose the type of cable...make sure you detect the ports to see if you're connecting to the correct port.

anyone have any ideas? TIA,Jay

ok never mind after a few hours of sleep i rememberd how to use my phone :P

Posted by: rdeavies

I'm can't install the USB Drivers while following the setup phone instructions at the vox8910 site. When i direct to the Curitel folder it says specific location does not contain information on the hardware.

Posted by: weiweiwei

are you using version 4.18 or 4.22?

not sure which version is the better one

Posted by: rdeavies

I installed 4.22. Downloaded this file: Curitel_USB_driver(ver4_22).exe and installed it. Then when i plugged my usb cable into the comp port (plug phone into usb cable first while its off) xp doesn't recognize the driver so then i manually select the installed folder but it still doesn't work. On the data cable it does say, "For Aud 8900" and I got it off ebay. Been trying different methods of installing the drivers for 2 hours but not working lol.

I am having an issue with the connection to Bitpim if anyone else has experienced this feedback will be welcome and appreciated...

when I connect my Vox8910 (in pwr'ed down mode) to the cable the front LCD lights up but nothing appears on it. I try to access it in bitpim doesn't work
when I connect the fone to the cable in pwr'd on mode it doesn't detect it either ... I was able to successfully able to transfer files between my HDD and my 8900 with this exact setup
I have both the Future and Cruitel Drivers installed when I go into hardware manager there are no "troubled" devices

thanks in advance for any info

**oh yea and in bitpim I have tried the VX4400 and VX6000 modes
**and the port is set correctly

http://tutorials.thephonemall.net/aud8910pic.htm says:

Connecting your phone:

4. Power your phone on, leave it unconnected from the cable, and type ##7678 and then the END key. You will get a list of USB options. Choose USB DIAG and hit Okay. Make sure you CLOSE the flip before before plugging the phone in. If you turn off your phone you WILL have to repeat this step. You can now plug in the phone.

try that maybe?

This is the error that I get when i plug in my USB cable into my phone (after entering ##7678)

After i click on the unknown device to see the drivers installed.

Then i click on driver to see properties of the driver and click on Update Driver.

Then i direct the driver installation directory to the directory that setup.exe of the Curitell Driver 4.18 installed into.

This is the error i end up with.

Any help will be appreciated.

I was reading up on the BitPim online help after it didn't work, and found this:

" Audiovox CDM8900 This phone is no longer supported by BitPim. Do not use this phone with BitPim. Do not ask for support. The internal software in this phone is very fragile, and the phone can be rendered completely inoperable through trivial operations. "

This is for version .7 test 10 I know as of test 6 it supports the phone. Also, I'm assuming that the CDM8900 is similar to the CDM8910, correct me if I'm wrong. Does anyone know where I can get any of the tests before test 10?? Thank you so much!

did you read:

Connecting your phone:

4. Power your phone on, leave it unconnected from the cable, and type ##7678 and then the END key. You will get a list of USB options. Choose USB DIAG and hit Okay. Make sure you CLOSE the flip before before plugging the phone in. If you turn off your phone you WILL have to repeat this step. You can now plug in the phone.

5. Open up BitPim and go to Edit - click on Settings.

Thanks for your reply but I tried that already and it doesn' work. Do you think theres any chance that the cable that I bought is just broken?

itsajoker,

To make the MP3's, try Switch Plus it came with Wave Pad and both were free, I found the link on this site. I have made a bunch of ringtones for myself using Wave Pad, to cut the wavs into 20 second parts, it takes a few minutes to get the hang of it, but it's worth it. I've read that anything over 20 seconds is wasted space on your phone.

I have Alltel service to, so our phones should work the same, you would think. On the uploading to the phone, I also spent hours trying to get Brewsky to work before I got Bitpim to work. I use the Bitpim program and data cable on port 4. I have tried wavs and MP3's, Wavs will not work, the files have to be in MP3 format for them to work. . Here is how I did it.

1. Dial ##7678 & press End on your phone, this will open Run Time DevMap. Choose 1. Next select USB DIAG, wait for a message then close the phone.

2. Plug data cord into phone (make sure the computer resopnds to the phone), start Bitpim. (You have to work in the File system section). Click on File System tab and click on the + symbol under the word Name and wait for it to retrieve your data tree.

3. Expand the User file. Expand the Sound file. Expand Ringer file.

4. Right click on Ringer file and select new file. Choose the Mp3 file you want, you need to be sure of the path, I put mine on the desktop so I can find them. (( make sure file names are on word ) ex. "myringer.mp3" ).

5. Wait for the file to upload to the phone, watch the status bar go up. You should now see the file in your data tree, remember, make sure it's in mp3 format or it will not work.

6. Right click on the - symbol at the top of the data tree, click the refresh option.

7. Right click on the - symbol again and reboot phone.

8. After phone turns off I always unplug the cord. It should restart on it's own.

9. On your phone goto Menu, Axcess Apps and enter the program.

10. When you see the folder options," the shopping cart, question mark and such", press the CLR button, you should see Good Bye on your screen, then you should get an error message (don't worry that means it worked).

11. Goto your Media Gallery, under Tones, see if it is there. If they are there test them, if they work you go into your Settings, Sounds, Ringer Type and choose the new tone.

This works for me, I have loaded six on my phone already, not sure about memory problems, so I stopped at six. I have also done wallpaper uploads and changes, much the same but the files go in the Brew Files not the User files and of course they are not mp3's, I'll save that for later.

Hope this helps, let me know.

to make your own tones i think Audacity works best... then save export as an mps and put it on your card or in internal memory (but dont out too much on there)

I have used brewsky to upload ringtines to my 8900 for almost a year. well the phone dyed and they sent me a 8910 pluged it in uploaded the same ringtones and all i get is a single tone not the midi or mp3 file can someone please point me in the right direction.

Posted by: Shadow5

kfosh,

I posted instructions for this phone yesterday in this thread, look back two post. I remember having the same one tone problem before I really got it right. I think the phone is not seeing the changes you made, try these steps to make it see the changes, from my prior post:

If this doesn't work you may want to use Bitpim and the prior post instructions, they work every time for me. I never had any luck with the Brewsky program. I have Alltel service, not sure if that matters or not on these phones.

Hope this helps

this it what i get in bitpim the phone is not responding while transitioning from none brew can someone tell me what iam doing wrong please

itsajoker,

Have you set your settings "port" on the Bitpim program, it took me a while to get that right on mine, I think there are five to choose from, I use port 4 on both of my phones. Also be sure not to have Brewsky open while you work in Bitpim.

Not really clear on this part of your post " the phone is not responding while transitioning from none brew ", is this a message on the phone?

To make the MP3's, try Switch Plus it came with Wave Pad and both were free, I found the link on this site. I have two of these phones and the instructions I posted before work on both every time.
Keep posting and try not to get too mad and we'll work this out, if not me someone will be able to help you out.

Has anyone SPECIFICALLY been able to upload images and ringtones, especially mp3 ringtones, to the Virgin Mobile 8910?

I have a CDM-8910VM and unlike a contract with Verizon in which the phone can be replaced, mine CANNOT. So, considering the repeated posts from people who've fried their phones, I expect you'd understand why I'm a little cautious about uploading anything. Although I'd use the cable & app to d/l pix off the phone.

I'd LOVE to be able to upload mp3 ringtones to the phone, but only if people have consistently been able to do so on the 8910VM.

I hope someone can help.

i used the bitpim way to get the ringtones on my phone went to the get it now opening screen and then cancelled out i got my ringtones but verizon still charged me for downloading does anyone know how to get past the charge so it wont happen when i decide to change my ringtones

Posted by: 8910user15650

wait... they charged you for downloading? they couldn't charge you for downloading, unless you actually download something...

Call them up (*611) and ask what the download was... are you sure you didn't download a game, or an actual ringer??

I have an 8910 through Cricket. Connected through BitPim, downloaded a MP3. The file didn't show on the phone, so I power cycled it and now all I get when I power it on is the Cricket logo screen. After a couple of minutes it goes to a white screen that says dog.c 01013, then the phone reboots. Anyone know what is wrong and how to fix it?

Thanks!http://www.howardforums.com/newreply.php#

upping this powerful post (and hoping for a powerful answer)

i think its pretty safe to upload..not unless u have like a power surge go through ur computer or if you decide to delete things without care. I have alltel and so far so good. I was even pushed into a pool and thought my phone was ruined, but i left my phone out in my car in 100 degree heat and it dried it out..now everything works no blotches on the screen or anything..well my camera isn't as sharp anymore but i never really used that.

How do I install games on my 8910? I don't have an MA directory.

Posted by: steppnator

I have uploaded/downloaded ringtones and pics to my Celluar One Audiovox 8900 many times. I bought my kid a Audiovox 8910 (Cellular One).
I know how to use BitPim and Brewsky, but can't seem to get it working right. I can access the 8910, and load mp3's to it, but they will not play. I can see them in Media Gallery, Tones.

Any help?
