Audiovox 5600 Modem Tethering - Need Driver!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mnicol819

I am trying to tether my Audiovox SMT 5600 to my laptop. I turn on the modem link, plug in the the USB cable, and Windows detects the device. The device is detected as a 'USB Device'. When I try to install the drivers it fails to find anything. I am allowing Windows to search for the driver and have also tried to pointing it to the drivers on the CD that came with the phone. It never finds a driver! The CD contains a file called 'USBMDM.INF' but it doesn't work.

I reluctantly decided to call AT&T about the problem but they were unable to help. They didn't have any information about the drivers because the phone is new. If anyone has gotten this to work or has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks!

make sure you have latest version of activesync installed (3.7.1)

Posted by: mnicol819

I have the latest version. Did you get it to work? What driver did you use? Thanks!

I don't know how it is with the 5600, but with every phone I've had in the past it was VERY IMPORTANT to install the data cable drivers BEFORE plugging the Phone/Cable into the computer. Otherwise, it will either never install the drivers, or install them incompletely.

Probably the same for your phone as well.

Good luck.

Does anyone know if this phone comes with the USB cable?

Posted by: mnicol819

Yes...it comes with a USB cable, which also happens to charge the phone. My ActiveSync works with the cable and bluetooth but the modem does not seem to work!

I just ordered this phone and the ATT rep said that it doesn't come with the cable or a headset. What all is included? Obviously the handset and batt. You said it comes with the USB cable so I am thinking that the rep I spoke with didn't know what she was talking about. If it does come with the cable then it should also have software. Did yours come with any type of headset?

I haven't really looked at the CD yet, but the phone comes with the case, a USB to mini USB sync cable, an AC to mini USB charger, and a wired stereo headset with an inline volume control.

mnicol819,

Amazing... Except for calling ATT (I know better ), I went through the exact same thing. We even did it on the same day!

Anyways, I found the USB modem driver for another HTC device at http://www.ppcw.net/downloads.php. I did a quick test and it works.

For those of you who hasn't gotten as far as mnicol819, here are the basic steps:
1) Setup the Phone
- Unplug the USB cable and/or disable USB connection from ActiveSync.
- Go to Start->Accessories->Modem Link (Shortcut Start 9 9 4 4)
- Select USB for Connection
- Hit the right softkey for Menu and select Activate
If you have problems activating, try unplugging the USB cable and/or disabling the USB connection from ActiveSync.

You have to do this everytime you go online. If you hit "done", you will be disconnected and the phone will go back to normal ActiveSync mode. If you want to use the phone, just hit the "home" key instead of "done".

2) Setup modem
- Download the "USB modem driver" from http://www.ppcw.net/downloads.php. Decompress the zip file and save the INF file.
- Plug in the usb cable
- When Windows will ask for a driver, point it to the inf file

3) Setup dial-up networking connection (DUN)
After the phone/modem is installed, proceed to setup a new "Network Connection" (DUN). I won't go into details since it is lengthy and OS dependent. Instructions are readily available elsewhere. Just remember to:
- pick "HTC USB Modem" as the modem,
- use *99# as the phone number,
- use blank/nothing as the username and password

Note: Depending on your plan, there may be additional charges for accessing the internet via your phone. There's no definitive answer yet but take a look at this thread for a discussion on charges.

Good luck!

spikoman...it worked. You da man!

The funny thing is that I came across that page many times but never downloaded the driver cause I didn't think it would work. I even got it to work now over bluetooth. True wireless internet anywhere on my laptop...doesn't get much better.

As for what the phone comes with...

1. Stereo headset. It has left and right earpieces for listening to mp3s. Has a talk/end button and volume adjustment inline. I'd prefer just one earpice for talking on the phone but I have a bluetooth headset for that.

2. Wall charger. Nothing fancy here...no cradle or anything.

3. USB cable. This is used for connecting to laptop for ActiveSynce, file transfer, modem, etc. Yes...it does charge the phone!

4. Phone belt case. This is real nice. Much better than most included cases. Only thing i don't like is that it can't be rotated, it always sits sideways when on a belt.

This phone is really nice! I'm a big fan of the Smartphone OS and this is the best one out there and a very good value as well. I had the Samsung sp-i600 from Sprint (not to be confused with sph-i600 from Verizon) and the Audiovox is much better. Not only does it cost half as much but it has bluetooth and a camera. Sprint disabled the modem functionality also because they want you to buy their modem cards and pay a seperate monthly data charge of $80 for unlimited use. What a joke!

Thanks again spikoman!

mnicol819,

I am glad that it worked out for you.

Which data plan do you have? I have the $25 unlimited mmode plan. I did some quick tests. I want to take a look at my bill before doing much while tethering to a laptop or pda.

Oh... Do yourself a favor and email yourself the inf file. Or put a copy of your PDA/USB drive. You never know when you may need it.

Enjoy...

I'm pretty sure the mMode unlimited plan does NOT cover the data transfered while tethered. mMode is only for the phone. You have to purchase seperate data plans for tethering. I'm in the same position...I just have the mMode plan. The thing is, without having a seperate data plan, I have no idea how much they will charge for the usage. GPRS is pretty slow so I doubt I will use very much anyways. I'd consider paying for it if the phone had EDGE or UMTS.

they charge $1 per MB when tethered.

Could someone guide me to set up an unlocked AT&T SMT 5600 for use with Cingular's GPRS? It has been an aweful trip! HELP!!!

Posted by: userplane

Hey - has anyone found a Macintosh Modem Script driver to tether the 5600 for GPRS connectivity?

Posted by: spikoman

Apparently the link to the driver went dead. Attached is the driver for Windows. Enjoy.

I am trying to set up my phone to use as either an IR modem or USB modem. I haven't been able to find a active link for a driver for the USB and even tried the one above but it isn;t an inf file. I can not figure out what I am doing wrong. I have read various sites about the set up and they all vary slightly as what to enter for the initilization sting ect. I am using Cingulars network. I was told by Cingular the username and password to use, but alot of the sites saty to leave it blank. the also told me the dial string is *99***1# , most site say just *99# , which is it? I was told the APN was isp.cingular is that right????? Every time I change something just slightly I get a different error message. Hopefully someone can help. It would be greatly appriciated.

hey read this page http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...ight=modem+link

or specifically this user(named ascalon , all credit goes to him) talks about some of the settings you need , and if you need the driver one guy post it in a link that works a little bit lower. I had the same problems and once i found this post I was set. Also if you want a good tutorial visit this page http://www.ppcw.net/index.php?itemid=1369&catid=4

Oh dear lord thank you. I've been trying to get this to work for months, and I finally got it!!! For the past week, I've been searching for the needed driver. I found the right driver for the smt5600 as "HTC USB MODEM" here

http://www.bugir.com/jon/gprs.html

you should right click the link, and save as to your location of choice. Then, just run windows installer, and look for the driver under where you saved the driver file. I thought I'd never get it to work.

also, here is a perfect faq http://www.ppcw.net/index.php?itemid=1369&catid=4

I have cingular, and used the following initialization string

AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular","",0,0
username- WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
password- CINGULAR1

And there you go! Everything you need to make a modem connection with your phone, and with a pretty **** good connection speed. But, it's still not dsl speed. Is there any way to change the settings and make it faster? Also, could someone please sticky this iether here or in the smartphone forum? I know there must be others out there who spent a great deal of time trying to find theese resources. Put it as "smartphone modem howto". Thanks.
