Changing soft key functions on C65

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Got my C65 yesterday. There is one think I couldn't do.
I want to change the functionality of the soft keys. By default, the left one goes to NewMMS and the right one goes to Games.
According to the manual I can easily change this by "briefly pressing the button and selecting Change". Well, when I press either one it goes streight to the screen to sent a new MMS or to select a game to play.

Called Fido customer service. The guy talked to a technician and said that this is impossible for C65. What is the manual for then?

Anyone with better luck than mine? Firmware update required?

Maybe it has been locked by your provider.

I have the same problem. Found no fix for it.

you cannot change the soft key!!... Siemens says it the provider fault, And fido does not have an answer...Siemens phones were great cause of teh ability to change everything!. However if its the providers fault and the soft key is set to the internet setting. I bet its a cash grab so when yo hit the key by mistake you get charged!!!

dam bastards!!

I think Fido techs simply don't know how to do this and what is the reason for it not working.

The two functions on my phone are NewMMS and Games. Both are free since they don't do anything "outside of the phone". I simply cancel new MMS if I get there or cancel Games menu. So there is no money here.

My bad. I cannot not remember what new siemens has the soft key saved to internet, but one does....

the c65 has a soft key right under the joystick that connects to the internet. It also cannot be programmed..... but all you have to do is disable the gprs in the Connectivity Menu and it will never connect, thus saving you some money if you should accidentally push that key

Just a thought here, would the headset trick with the CF62 work on the C65?
I remember discussions here that on the CF62, plugging in the headset will allow you to reconfigure the shortcut key. Would it work the same here? I don't own a C65 so I'm not able to try it at all.

Well, I don't have a headset. Maybe somebody who does may try it.

I was only able to change the key's function when you hold it, but I think that it means really briefly when you press it

I had the exact same problem. I purchased a C61 from Rogers, and the left softkey was set to Internet. I tried everything, and I just couldn't change it. I was really pi55ed! But try this trick - it worked for me!

Here's what you do to change it:

1.) Power OFF the phone

2.) Power ON the phone

The next step requires precise timing...

3.) Immediately after the startup animation, and immediately before the phone registers with the SIM/Network, you MUST QUICKLY press the left softkey (before it has a chance to load up the phone settings)

Since the phone cannot execute the left softkey function during this "startup" period, you will be able to set the left softkey to something else.

It worked for me! Good luck!

Let me know if this works!!

didnt work for me, strangely enough if I press one of the soft keys during booting, it seems to make the phone boot quicker.

About the booting quicker thing...seems like if you press a key during the startup animation sequence, it will interrupt that sequence.

Same thing for me. Could not do anything with the key functions but it looks like the phone boots faster.

I think it just skips the intro animation, causing it to go directly to the phone startup. I prefer the animation (using the football theme)

I changed the internet key. It goes to inbox when I click it, and SMS when I hold it.

Actually I would've preferred it to go to profiles when I click it. It didn't want to though.

In fact, I changed all the other keys too. The right softkey is camera, left-soft key is received calls....left on the joystick is alarm clock, right is "My Menu"; down is address book, up is profiles.

In any case -- no more pesky browser!

Regarding the eeprom tool:
When you first get it connected, click "load all" to read all the eeprom blocks on your phone. Then "select all" to select them all, and then click the left arrow to transfer to computer, then click "save as" to save to your computer.

After you use keychanger to hack, load that one eeprom and move it back across. It'll ask if you want to overwrite the block. Say "yes".

VERY IMPORTANT! At this point, highlight the block that was overwritten on your phone's side, and click "save selected" to do the actual overwriting. If you click "save all", it'll wipe the eeprom and rewrite only that one block. Save all is only used if you're rewriting the entire eeprom. If you screw up here, the phone is trashed.
