The first 220 I bought had a problem in that when you tried to play an mp3 there was no sound out of the speaker. I took it back Saturday and exchanged it for a new unit + bought the BB extended service for $39. On Saturday evening the problems started. I called my daughter. She said it sounded like I was across the room talking into my phone...she could not understand what I was saying at all. On the 3rd attempt I got my message through. That made me worry based on all the posts I had read. On Sunday I made 3 more calls that were bad. They were spread out though over a 6 hour period. On some calls made in between the bad ones callers said I sounded OK. Others said they could hardly hear me.

I can handle slightly low volume on my end and I agree that it is subjective...BUT when the people I call can't hear me...the phones not going to work for me. I drove back to BB in Memphis today and returned the xxxx thing. I tried...I really tried hard. Even defended it here on the boards but in the end I took it back. Too bad...I think it'll be a great phone when they get it fixed. I'll be getting a SMT5600 in short order I guess.

Did you note that the mic was under the phone? When I made initial calls holding the phone in my left hand I placed my pinkie over the mic port. When I placed calls holding it in my right hand I had no trouble. Maybe the 5600 will make you happy though, or even the Treo 650 which has me buzzing. I am patiently waiting on the MPx but this Treo release may be another of the many detours on the road to what I hope will be MPx bliss.

mb -- your experience seems to confirm that there might be some hardware issues with this phone. Since you, indeed, had no volume problems with the first one and had this outgoing sound issue with the 2nd -- it would be reasonable to think that these problems are more hardware than software/firmware.

What are your thoughts since it was *your* experience?
