Hi i am new to panasonic phones and i am interested in getting a g51. Whats the difference between G51M and G51U and what other kinds of G51s are there?

Also how come G55's are more expensive that G51s when G55 is black and white?

Whats your overall opinion on the phone? Good or bad?
How much did you pay? I saw them on ebay at this wireless rush shop for about 100 shipped.

Since you are in the US, the "U" is the version you want, unless you travel to Europe or Asia a lot.

Every retailer I've seen, the G51 is more expensive than the GD55. btw, the GD55 is the older model, the current B&W model is the A100.

I have a G51U and generally like it. It's just a phone, but a really, really small one. That's it - no BT, IR, voice activation, camera or other extras. I have no trouble messaging quickly on it, but I have small fingers.

btw, I found the keypad on the G51 much better than the GD55. The keys themselves are smaller on the G51, but there's more space between them and that makes it less likely you'll hit an adjacent key accidentally.

I bought mine locally in Canada, so my pricing wouldn't apply to you.

1. Another few questions. Are you able to download your own polyphonic ringtones using gprs?

2. How can you be sure a g51 is U E M ? Like if it doesnt come with the box etc is there a code you can type in the phone to see? Or is there something under the battery too look for?

3. How is the software? Is it buggy? I heard the g55 used to be really buggy and would reset all the time and stuff like that.

4. Whats the latest firmware?

5. This phone has CSD dialup wap instead of GPRS?

6. Can you give me an idea on price even if its canadien?

1. Haven't tried it. There's a poly ringtone composer built in as well.

2. The 1st line of the sticker under the battery cover is:

Model No. EB-G51U

(I presume the E and M versions are labelled accordingly).

3. I've had 2 lockups in about 1 month of ownership, cured by pulling the battery. Nothing too serious, afaik. There's another thread in this forum about echo in speaker mode, which doesn't surprise me, since the speaker is really loud.

4. I haven't found any info about firmware. The U model is pretty new, so I assume it's current. Panasonic doesn't list a data cable accessory, so I don't know if a firmware update is even possible.

5. There are option pages for both CSD and GPRS in the menus. The GPRS indcator is showing on my phone, even though I don't have a data plan, so I assume the default is GPRS.

6. I got mine for $220 CDN, but I've seen it sold locally for as high as $325. That's unlocked, since none of the local providers carry it. $1CDN = $.80 USD. I believe the US MSRP is $165.

well i just bought mine today for $110 USD in the Los Angeles area from Wireless Experts in west wood. I guess pretty good deal.

My home gets poor reception though so half of the time it says emergency 112

So i have to leave it by the window

boy this phone is AWFUL!

The LCD already has a defect in it and it has been less than 1 week!
There is a blank horizontal line in the middle of the LCD now and I have barely used the headset at all!!

this is my first and LAST panasonic phone i EVER buy..
PANASONIC = TRASH!!!
