amazinhammerbro, go to the sprint/nextel web page, your manual or download a picture from your phone to your computer and check on the specifics of your phone to find out the screen size. (the 860 is something like 145x220). After you know what your display size is, take a picture you want and edit it with photo editing software. If you don't have a good photo edit software, just use paintbrush. You want to resize the image to your screens display. So, if you have an 800 x 600 resolution picture, open it in paintbrush, click on "image" then "stretch/skew" and shrink it by whatever percentage you need to get it to the display size of your phone. (you'll have to do a little math or a lot of guess and check to get the right size) Once you have the right size, save the picture as a *.gif or *.jpg and make sure the saved file is in lower case letters. ("picture.jpg" not "picture.JPG") Also, if you save the file and can't see the extension "*.jpg", then you have to enable it by going into "My Computer", click on "Tools" then "Folder Options" then the "View" tab and about the 9th or 10th option down, uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types". Then open WebJal and download it to your phone.

How To Rename Your Host File
To rename your Hosts File all you have to do is open it in Notepad, do the changes you need to and then Save-As "HOSTS". It is important that you save it in all caps with the " " on the ends. Also make sure that right under where you type in the file name that you make "save as type" All Files and not Text Files.

The HOST file is the main problem for most of you. Make sure you only have one HOST file on your computer (you can find it in this folder XP/2000- C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc 9x/ME- C:\Windows\System). If there are multiple files that say HOST then delete them. Also make sure that the HOST file does not contain any file extensions (i.e. .sam, .txt, .blah blah blah). One Last thing to check is that the "Read-Only" box is not checked in the prop. Right click on the HOST file and go to PROP. Make sure that the "read-only" part is not marked.....its at the bottom.

okay..so took me a while last night to connect and log in to webjal, but when i got the new webjal patch.. i logged in no problem & sent files to my phones no problem....but now when i hook up my phone with my usb cord, the computer wont notice that its plugged in. i've tried every port and reinstalled all the software.. still wont regognize the usb and i still cannot log in. help.........please

Do you see in your registry that Webjal is configured to use the USB port ?

Kinda: HKey_Current_User\Software\Motorola\Webjal\Options

You should see in the right pane: Use USB with 0x00000001 as a DWord value..

See it ?

Ok, i have been working at this for a while and reading all the forums i can but still cant get it to work. I install the USB drivers for the motorola IDEN phones, then i install webjal and patch it. But for whatever reason i cannot get webjal to read my usb cable connected to my phone. I go to device manager and under modems it says motorola IDEN usb phone modem and it says its working properly, I plug the usb into my computer and my comp reads it fine and says its working properly but i cant get webjal to even read that i have it installed on my comp. I know this has probably been asked and answered a billion times but maybe i can still get some feedback on this problem. thanks for your time

Don't feel bad I tried the regedit and no luck for me. It's weird. I just got this laptop and it's running Windows XP plus im using a router. I wonder if that could be it but I doubt it. At this point I am as frustrated as you are.

I even tried this but with no luck.

I tried that and it didnt work BUT after staying up all night I finally have ringtones.

I uninstalled everything for the 50th time and with the reg hack zip that is on here and reinstalling it finally tried to connect but told me my software wont read my phone that I needed to update the webjal. soooooooooo I uninstalled everything and again and downloaded everything from www.blazerxtreme.com/i860 and it works now.

I guess the version he has is the newest one and the patcher installed different then the ones I was using. if you download from him the patcher is in the webjal zip file already so read the readme file.

I have been reading the posts on here for almost a month but just signed up yesterday. I know the long time posters on here(which are only several I am referring to that I kept reading) has a problem with people posting questions and not searching. all I can tell you is be more patient with people. I have forum experience and own 2 atv forums but you have to remember 80% of the people that comes on here has never been on a forum before. that and the search feature sucks to find anwsers here cause it dont highlight you search. . when you have threads as long as some of these are and you search for one thing and it spits up 28 pages you have to go through it would be nice to have you key words you searching for highlighted. I dont know what was more frustrating reading through all the crap to find an anwser or the phone not working.

dont take me wrong please, it was just what I saw reading through all the post. and to who ever owns the board, thank you alot for providing us with a place to learn to use our phones. thanks alot.

i started up webjal last night...had to get a new patcher to get it to connect to phone..added wallpaper and ringtones no problem. turned off the program, 2 minutes later i went to use it and it will not connect to phone. says that i need to check my connections. i unplugged and replugged the data cable sever times and still wouldnt connect. any ideas?

ok so yesterday i decided to just try to use it again, i plugged in the phone, started the program...and the stupid thing connected. i dont know what happened. but it worked. so i quickly got all i wanted on that phone and two others. not sure what happened....restarting the computer fixed it i guess. anywho, so i no longer need help.

I'm trying to load opera mini with webjal. I keep getting the error message " an error has occurred while trying to read the file for download".
It's the .jad file I click on to download and it's under 16 characters long but I can't get it to work. I'm out of ideas.
Please help.
Or if anyone can specifically help with how to get opera mini on an i860....

Anyone having trouble with WebJal v3.0, Ringtones, Wallpapers, J2ME go to http://harrythompson.com and follow the easy and self explaining instructions, and support him if you can, or link to his site, pretty good guy. Haxors with demanding but vague messages in gigantic all caps like above need not apply, forget it, your hopeless....

PS - Including "I get some error Blah Blah" in your request for help, as well as being annoyingly gigantic is the fastest way to get ignored, since it apparetly isn't common knowledge...

ok so i dont know what im doing wrong ive used web jal before and ive never had a problem with it now when i try to connect the phone to it it gives me "there is no IDEN USB driver isntalled. please refer to your IDEN USB driver installation instructions." thats even after i install the drivers, and it also gives me the same error when i go to options and i try to click on the "connect via USB connection" box PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1:my phone is not connecting to webjal. I keep on getting the message "application was unable to read the required information. please check your connection and your prefences. ..So i check my prefernces and and I check the box that says" Connect via USB connection" and it says my drivers arnt installed. (But i have installed the drivers) ..I have tried this like 500 times(literally)...I have been at this for like 2 days straight...

Oh and I tried ***** and I get the same message"no driveres" check preferences..I dont get it...CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP...THANKYOU!!

A month ago i had the same prob after haveing been using this for over a yr. MY 870 just stoped working and my wife 730 would work. So when i got my wife a new 870 two weeks ago and her phone worked. At that point i knw what the prob was. My phone had to much stuff on it.
After removing some games from my phone it worked fine. I spent three weeks or worhtless work trying to get the thing rht when it was my phone and not the program. Check the phone remove some apps that may be holding up a ton of mem.

I just recently figured this out. Install everything normally. Start up your program and disconnect the phone or USB cable. Then when you click a connect to phone button (either on Webjal or phonebook manager, etc.), plug the phone back in while it is trying to establish a connection. It should then work. Its been doing the trick for me. Good luck.

First I thought I would mention that it took me about 3 days of constant tweaking, searching, and cursing to get webjal to load on two of my PC's. First thing to note, is that unless you are running your own webserver, you need to be on the internet to login. Second that caused me much pain, the data cable for the ixxx series phones seems not to connnect very securely, it has so many pins that it will come disconnected from the phone, or just not connect to begin with. Unless you have sounds disabled on your PC, you should hear the "New hardware connected" sound when the phone is properly connected, if you immediately get the "hardware disconnected" sound after putting the phone down, the cable is coming loose. With one of my older phones, I had to use a little tape to hold it on.
Last these phones are extremely picky about the data you load, wallpapers for instance cannot be over 16,000 bytes in size (16kB), Wav's have to be in a certain format (can't remember now). If you load a file, and it seems to load but doesn't appear on your phone DO NOT keep reloading it or others. It may be sucking up memory, but not visable on the phone. To fix this issue, upload a file with the EXACT same name as the first but in the correct or different format to relpace the original.
Last note that took me a while to get right, on the i415 & i450 phones, wallpapers should be 130x130 pixels or you will get tileing.
Hope this helps at least one person!

I install webjal as directed using the drivers and patcher as required and I get an error when I click on the box to use USB connection and the error states I did not install USB drivers but I did? What is wrong?

all the apps loaded to the phone and the phone still work, but now when i try to connect to phone in webjal, it end up crashing again. My wifes phone still works with webjal and this is my second i870 in a week(exchanged my 1st i870). I thought that maybe in exhausted the phone memory while uploading the java apps, so i deleted some of the apps i didnt like. loaded webjal...crashed again... grrrr.... Now what? i have reinstalled all the iden related software on my pc and everything still works with my wifes phone... and i dont want to make another trip for a 3rd i870. HELP!!!

What could cause Webjal and Myj@l to go through the whole download process where it gets to the end of downloading wallpapers to my phone and then says "communication error..."? Both programs recognize the phone and I had been d/l wallpapers just yesterday. As well, I can still install Java stuff, so it is not an issue of not finding the phone.

I tried both usb and serial cables.

I have installed WebJal into many of my friends PC's always with no problem using the VinnyCuz server patch method now on my own new PC I just belt my boot drive letter ended up being F: instead of the more common C: or D: This has caused issues with the patch since its only programmed for a C: drive extention to find the hosts file under Windows\system32\drivers\etc But I think I found a way around this my only issue now has been installing the drivers into the F: drive or my back up drive of D: drive it wont install or recognize I keep getting the below error when I go to check the USB tab in WebJal

If anyone can help with this with some sort of exe editor or something to chance the install of the USB drivers I need I would really apprecite it.

To RI-SHO you might be able to change the driver letter under disk management. I'm not sure that this will work as it is the system or (Boot) drive, but it's worth a try. Right Click My Computer>Manage>Disk Management.
Highlight the F: drive that you are needing to change, right click and check "Change Drive Letter", set it to C:, and all should be well. (Note:If your system already set some other drive to C: right click and change that drive to Z or something first, then try to change the boot drive, then change the Z drive back to another letter.
Note for the future that you can use this method to change the drive letter of ANY other drive in your system, but also remember that if you have applications installed to it, that they may cease to work. For that you would need partition magic's "Drive Mapper" It may or may not let you change, I've never changed the boot drive, but I did have this same problem when I installed to a Raid array for the first time.
Hope this resolves your issue.

I'm in the same boat as this guy.....I'm getting that same message that the drivers aren't installed and I've installed them 500 times also.....any reasons why my PC isn't picking up my phone?

So I finally got everything I needed to download stuff to my i275 WebJal, the patch, the cable, everything. So I downloaded an update for my phone from Motorola first and then added some Wallpapers. I downloaded more than one at a time. The download history shows I got it on my phone but I can't find it. And I've tried to redownload from the Java Menu, but still I can't find my stuff. What do I need to do? If it is in my phone somewhere, I need to delete it to free up space, but how? HELP!

I spent too many hours almost 24 (on and off) trying to figure this out and no break. Ok I recently downloaded webjal, My issue is this I have the i850 the usb cable and the software.The error I get is when I'm downloading my ringtones.It says the file is to big or that the format must be a midi file. Ok I did a search but couldn't seem to find
the answer to my problem. I have Webjal on
my computer and everything works great, but
I tried to put it on my friends computer and
it keeps coming up that there is no phone
attatched. I tried my phone on it and same thing
so I don't think it's the phone. I also tried uninstalling
Webjal and reinstalling 3 times and it still says the
same thing. Oh I also tried differant USB ports and
the cord works fine on my computer. I'm Stumped!

I recently loaded a few ring tones into my i850 and they didn't show up but the memory says they have. I was wondering if there is a way to get this lost memory back? Would going to Menu>Settings>Reset Defaults enable me to get my memory back? Also if you know how to put mp3's on this phone and how they must be formatted inorder to do so, i would greatly appreciate it.

I have looked everywhere, I keep getting "A general communication error occured while communication to the phone. Please verify the connection bettwen the computer, phone and cable as wel as your preference settings. In addition you may try setting the phone baud rate to 19200 or the "Can't connect to server" error, I tied everything, I tired different ringtones, I can't get anything to load onto my phone. THis is wat i got lets see if any one ran into this prob or knows how to take care of it. i have the whole vinny server hook up on my laptop- ok had a major problem with it saying that it does not have the iden usb drivers . and of course i have them and installed 20x's and it still says the same thing. now everything is up to date on my laptop. i just dump the system to give it a fresh start . i thought at first it was the mediacenter XP giving it the prob so i went back to the old xp pro. now what i did is tried the 870 to pick up on the drivers u know the pk1 and blah blah blah . it didnt do that . i tried the 730 and it worked find the drivers installed and everything .

So i think its all good tried a boost 730 and it works too. plug my 870 in and this is the error every damn time .even before formated the comp. "the application was unable to read the required phone information. Please check your connection andyour preferences. click retry to try again or cancel to stop." now it worked fine for the old phones. not the new one. wtf. now i read thru alot of this thread hearing bout how vinnys server is closed and the other guy is charging and all this other jazz. is there anything out there ? u can im me email me and everything.

i greatly appreciate any info.

I have had the same exact problem, and same exact error with my i870. I have used my old phones that I have sold to friends and my wifes phone (i730, i830, and i860) and all those phones work fine. My i870 will not install p2k drivers unless I restart phone while holding the soft keys. Then of course when I restart the phone the p2k device is gone and the Iden Motorola Modem appears again. I start up webjal and it says it cannot get required info from phone. With all other phones it recognizes new device and installs p2k drivers. I have gone through every tutorial, and suggestion I can find so far and noting seems to work. And it is not only webjal but all software including phonebook manager, and software updates. I would love any help with this.

I have gone through every tutorial, and suggestion I can find so far and noting seems to work. And it is not only webjal but all software including phonebook manager, and software updates. I would love any help with this.

Hook up old phone and let it install the p2k driver then hook up 870 and it will again install p2k driver and all is well.

Installing the p2k driver is not the issue, it is getting the computer to recognize my phone as a p2k device. I have tried the trick mentioned somewhere on here about hooking up old phone and switching them really quick. That did not work for me, and as I said before all other phone models I have tried hae worked without a single problem. My phone will only be recognized as a modem.

Why am I having a problems downloading Webjal? During the setup I get a message that reads:

"Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabalize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the software vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing."

Anyone else getting this?
What do I do?

This is a Microsoft general warning because the soft. you're trying to intall has not been numerically signed. I'd say 1 company out of 20 MIGHT have the MS certification described. So go ahead, just make sure there's no virus.

i bought to sets of data cable to make sure that it wasnt the cable

Another dumb newbe ? I have webjal and the patch and a cable. We have three phones an i530 I'm trying to download ringtones to . An i710 and an i860 I'm trying to dowload ringtones, and wallpaper to. Webjal boots up I logon and it will connect to all three phones but when I try to download I get the check connection between the computer and the phone or set phone to 19200. I've tryed all three phones at 19200 and auto. Here is newbe ? what do you do to the phone. All the readmes I have say nothing about the phone.
I just have the phone turned on, do you put at some setting or what.
I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong section.

An easier way to get your phone going with usb is to install the iden phonebook or media downloader to get the usb drivers into your system. If after installing and using one of these programs, install webjal. if it still doesn't connect, start with the basics. when you plug your phone into the datacable the 1st time, xp should prompt you to install drivers. when that's done, you should have a new modem listed in device manager called 'motorola iden usb modem'.
If you get webjal (or iden phonebook or moto media downloader) connected to phone, modem in device mgr will go away and new heading will appear, "Motorola iDEN P2K Device'. You should be connected at this point to the phone.
Someone somewhere (http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1017685 )this info, if you've installed the iden usb drivers and it doesn't allow usb as connection you have to check the registry.
click 'start'
clcik 'run'
type 'regedit' and hit return
scroll to 'hkey_users'
scroll to entry that starts 's-1-5-21'
click 'software'
click 'motorola'
click 'webjal'
there should be a key 'use_usb' and the dword value should be 1

I just upgraded to a i850 from an i710. On my 710, I had figured out how to use webjal to transfer ringtones and wallpapers.
Well, I can't get a ringtone to transfer to the i850 to save my life. I get the "general communication error....baud rate to 19200" error we all know and love. I've run the wav. file through a program and processed it down to exactly what the Harry Thompson page said to do, still, no way. I've tried different tones, tried the ones I had on my old phone, tried mp3's, tried MIDI, to no avail.
Wallpapers transfer over on the first try.
What gives?
Is this phone not capable of recieving a ringtone in this way?
I can buy them on the nextel site, but would rather create my own.
Help!

Future reference, I think I figured out what the problem was.
We got these new phones and just swapped the sim cards. The Serial numbers and the sim ID's didn't match. Everyone at Nextel (besides our salesman!) knew that just swapping sims would cause problems.
This was one of them.
After I called nextel, switched sims back, and let them do the switch properly, I transferred the old ringtone over on the first try.
Problem solved!

you have to restart your computer. then start webjal
then choose login
when it ask you for the user id and password do not type anything just click OK.

Webjal worked fine for me up until today when I updated my phone to the newest software. For some reason webjal won't recongnize the phone, even after reinstalling the usb drivers and toggling the usb box. I am using software I originally downloaded from Harry Thompson.

I got it to work on media edition the trick was to plug the cable into the phone right after you select login and ok. As media find the device so will webjal

im using webjal and i can load midi ringtones only to my i670 and my understanding is that it can you wav ringtones but webjal says all files must be in midi format. and when i try to load a wav ringtone it gives me an error at the end. any solution to this or is all my phone can take is midi ringtones?

I was loading some java apps onto my using the iden webjal application. I was opening one of the applications and suddenly my phone powers off, then back on, then back off, then back on...you guys get the picture. I have tried to use the iden software upgrade available from motorola to flash my software, but it doesn't work. The phone says "FLASHStrap FS0Av00.23i28F128W18-ROM8 Code OK Ready to program." But I keep getting 2 errors on my computer. One is "Cannot read phone onformation. Please remove battery from back of the phone, disconnect the phone from data cable, put the battery back on, connect the data cable to the phone and retry to upgrade the phone. if problem persists please contact customer support." The other error I get is "Error 10212 The backup codeplug cannot be found. Phone cannot be recovered. Contact Motorola, Inc. at (800) 453-0920." Please help. Is there anyway to recover this without having to call customer care.

I tried using webjal to load some GIF files as wallpapers to my i830 (actually they were JPG files but I simply change the file extension to GIF which has worked for me before). They seemed to load correctly and my memory is showing that those images have taken up space on my phone (it is showing that I have about 2000kbs available when I normally have about 2800) but I cannot find them anywhere. I don't mind losing the wallpapers, I just want my memory back. I have tried to master clear the phone about 6 times, i have tried to reflash the software about 3 times. Nothing seems to be working. Please help.

sounds like you need to force the usb check box.
Run Regedit
go to: hkey_Current_user / Software / Motorola
Check the Subfolders for the WebJal folder Look for a DWORD Value with USE_USB in it and change the Value from 0 to 1.

Try with a program called betterjal, you might be able to find them and delete them.

Hey guys, i downloaded webjal and installed it and have been using it for years but i dont know what happened and now it dosn't work. I uninstalled webjal and re-installed it again and now its like the computer dosn't recognize the phone at all. I know it has to do with the drivers but I don't know where to get them from there. I read the forums a while ago and it said that i needed service pack 1 or 2 and i dont even know if i have 1 or 2 but when i go to microsoft.com it says that my version of xp might be a pirated version and it wont let me download the service pack I need. Is there a way around the service pack at all? What should I do? I have the same old boring ringtones from like 6 months ago and im stuck..... Thanks

I run webjal.
I login.
I go to preferences and make sure the baud rate is 19200, the "Connect via USB connection" box is checked.
I try to connect to phone and I get this error message: "The application was unable to read the required phone information. Please check your cable connection and your preferences. Click retry to try again or cancel to stop."

Like I said, I've read almost everything extensively on this thread and this question has been asked about seven or eight times without an answer. There has to be someone who has figured this error out and who can help. If I receive the answer, I will gladly repost, but I am at a loss for ideas right now. I've tried everything. Please help. Make sure you dont have any java apps running on your phone, or else it will not be able to connect. Also, i know on my i870 and i880, i sometimes have to remove my memory card for the phone to be able to connect. Check out harrythompson.com, theres alot of usefull information about different problems with webjal.

Sorry man, but the link is no good, what application are you sharing so we can at least search. I have tried the harry thompson method and also have attempted to uninstall and reinstall more then once. have been searching and reading for a fix. I also am getting the unable to recieve the required information. I think that this is because when the webjal patch came out it changed the registry to access a different website. there used to be a long process to make webjal access each persons own computer by tricking the program that it was accessing a server. * NOTE * this is my understanding, and offers no help into a quick fix, but i was loading apps and ringtones back when the 730 was new. and am stuck just like some of the people above.

I've used Webjal before on my old phone, but I just got a new one (same model) and now it won't work... I have an i880, and I can log into Webjal, but I can't connect to the phone. I keep getting the "The application was unable to read the required information from the phone..." message. I'm also getting a message from my computer that says that there was a power surge on the USB port. Could that have anything to do with it?

But only when I try to upload a ringtone, The webjal says only accepts 0 midi ringtones and I want to upload wav or mp3 any ideas??
