Just wondering what is the difference between DCA-540 and DCA-510 cables.
Also, how can I say which one is which by just looking at them?

Here is a quote from Siemens website:
Quote:
Connect your mobile to the PC using one of the following cables compatible with your C65:
- Data Cable DCA-500 (serial->serial) / Data Cable USB DCA-510 (USB->serial, use only COM port 1 to 9)
Please note that the Data Cable USB DCA-540 (USB->USB) is NOT supported

What is USB->Serial and what is USB->USB?

The difference is that a USB->Serial cable plugs into a USB port, but will have an electronics package somewhere in the cable (you can't miss the bulge) where it turns the USB interface into a serial interface that the phone can use.

The DCA-510 is a USB->Serial cable that has a large bulge and an on off switch for whether or not you want the phone to be charged while plugged into the cable or not. On one end is a USB connector, the other end a Slim-Lumberg.

The DCA-540 is a true USB cable with no additional electronics (the phone has a built in USB interface) with a USB connector on one end and a Slim-Lumberg on the other.

A phone made for one will not work with the other.

Thanks a lot, 4mula1

Note that you cannot update firmware with DCA-540!

DCA-500 and DCA-510 can be used to update firmware.

I stand corrected on one point I made earlier:

It seems that on the newer 65 series phones you can use the DCA-500 (serial -> serial), DCA-510 (USB -> serial) and DCA-540 (USB -> USB). The catch is that you can't use the DCA-540 for firmware updates like DonnyDave pointed out.

what?! then what cable do you actually use to upgrade the firmware on the SX1? i thought the DCA-510 wasn't compatible with the SX1

This has baffled me. For the SX1, the only cable you can use is the DCA-540, which works for not only data but for firmware updates also. Why on earth Siemens made it so you can't use that cable for firmware updates on the 65 series phones is beyond me.

My wife is getting an SL65 for Christmas. Good thing I already have the DCA-510 for her SL55...

so is there any good for me getting serial cable for my sx1?
