S40 vs. Ericsson T39???

I'm switching from At&T to T-mobile this coming week and need to get a new phone. I don't need any games, colour screens etc. I'm looking for a relatively small, reliable worldphone/triband with good reception, good battery life and straight-forward menu system. I think I've basically narrowed it down to the S40 and teh Ericsson T39 since I don't like Motorola very much. I like both phones when I've played with them in the shop but that doesn't mean much it seems. The Ericsson strikes me as a workhorse phone, while the S40 is more stylish and seems more fragile.

Anyway, I've read so many conflicting reviews on the S40 that I really hesitate to buy it - it seems like a hit or miss thing. Some people say it's the best while other say it's the worst! The ericsson genearlly gets great reviews. Are the problems with the S40 only related to which firmware version you have and how do I know before I buy which firmware is in the phone?

So, my question: what would you recommend? Have you used both phones? If so, what is your opinion?

By the way, the best prices I've found for unlocked models with t-mobile are $25 for the Siemens and $79 for the Ericsson.

Thanks - I really appreciate any opinions!

I'd say go with the T39. I personally own both and they are both good phones, but there appears to be more of a following with Ericsson Phones and thus greater support from people here.

The S40 is a tough phone too, and it takes well to drops.

There are basically more things you could do with the ericsson than the Siemens... Plus the S40 is a discontinued phone... as some people have said in this forum...

the T39 is good... and it does better with reception too!

Thanks! I went out and bought two Ericsson T39s for me and my girlfriend. I compared siemens and ericsson at the shop and finally decided that I really like the utilitarian look of the ericsson. Plus the guy in the shop told me he thought the Ericsson was a better, more reliable phone (he had little incentive to).

I've been playing around with it and must say it seems like a great little phone. Time will tell more I suppose

The T39 is discontinued as well. However, it is a great phone, I love it. Great battery life. the slim battery will last about 5 days. the thick one about 3 weeks !!!

Well, I had the T39 for three months before it developed the infamous 'no network' problem and has become unusable. I sent it in to Ericsson last week but I doubt they'll get it back to me soon. Frustrating! I hope it doesn't happen to my girlfriend's phone too. Damn.

I'm trying to find a Siemens S40 cheap but no luck yet.

Just an update.

PM me with your definition of 'cheap'. I have 2, unlocked, with hands-free and car adapters, as well as cases. Both used, but well taken care of. And both about 4 months old.
