Well I got Power Protect instead becasuse it locks video, music, pictures and other files... so I went with that.

But thanks anyway.

I don't know if it's been talked about here but just there some might be interested to check this out....

http://www.vitotechnology.com/en/pr..._p800_p900.html

There are a couple of features I particularly liked like ring tones for groups, and a birthday field in contacts... blah, blah...

Posted by: Calculon

Interesting but it looks lke something that could really muck up your OS if it goes faulty.

Posted by: L Bo

Well I'm down to 10% off my now 3 day charge. I noticed that the % will vary since I've seen it come back up after being lower than my original check.

Now its time to charge!!

Keeping fingers crossed!

Sorry if this has been posted before. I couldn't find it if it has.

I'm looking for an IM application for the P910a.

Are there any that work with aol, msn and yahoo?

Also, does anyone use any other email application. I'm currently trying out profimail but can't get it to work with my gmail.

Somone recomended jmsn pro.

That looks like it's nice too but then it only supports msn and it's not free either.

I am also having problems with opera. Does it automatically detect what connection to use. I can't seem to find anywhere to select a connection either. any help or ideas would be greately appreciated.

Posted by: dimensiondvdrob

i also have 2 questions:

1. When I use Advanced Call Manager, the photos app does not allow me to show photos full screen and also slows down the photos app. Does anyone have any experience and/or workarounds for this?

2. When I paste the web address for my T-Zones homepage into Opera, the site won't open, though it will open using the built-in browser. Does anyone know if this is not able to be done with Opera (opening the WAP page for T-Zones)?

Thanks.

Ok well I figured this out. Sorry about that.

I restarted the phone and it worked like a charm. I'm going to have to switch to the $19.99 media works plan at the rate I'm going...

I'll be calling them first thing in the morning to do that. Probably drop my mins to 450 too.

Hey L Bo, u mentioned a place to get the settings for Wireless media for the P910a? I've not been able to get SE to work on the download and Cingular is a blank. I need to manually load it I guess. I do really like the phone otherwise and if i ever get this minor problem worked out i guess i'll keep it a while.. Tks

Try Here

I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for and if you know where to go to input them manually but I hope it helps.

Posted by: dotokpa

Why do the P910a's come wiht sandisk memory cards instead of Sony memory cards?

And why can't I talk on the phone and browse the internet at the same time as well.

Posted by: rchinn

I'm enjoying the P910i. my text messages a little bit faster to write than my P900. The larger internal memory is also great.

One thing that is taking some getting used to is the five applications shortcuts displayed vertically on the left hand side when the flip is open. I think these are from my service provider (orange) because i cant find a way to ditch their crapola internet shortcut and replace with an opera icon or something else.

Do i upgrade the firmware with from the SE website and risk negating my orange support? Is there another way?

Another that is weird is my IMEI is different on my box to whats *#06# says by the last 1/2 digits. I think this is giving me issues registering software. Anyone else get this?

Posted by: dotokpa

The last 2 digits may change with firmware upgrades...

As far as your icons, they're probably set up that way by orange.

I was skeptical about the keypad before I got my P910. I thot it would be too flimsy to hold the phone while typing and didn't want my phone breaking off from the keypad but it seems to be stronger than that off the P900.

The keypad also takes some time getting used to but it's a lot faster once you're used to it. I use it even tho my fingers are not small.

Posted by: dotokpa

Just got my 1GB card for mp P910a. I've transfered some music to it and I'm impressed with the player and ease of use of the player. Not planning on replacing my ipod but I'm sure it'll come in handy.

Now I just have to get some good ear plugs.

I'm waiting for the jabra c220's. And then I'll be set.

Posted by: newbie101

Can the P910 do landscape mode when web browsing?

Posted by: artesea

Nope, but the latest firmware version of the browser offers "Fit to Screen" browsing.
That and the scrollable jog dial hyperlink cliking, makes surfing the web with one hand great.

In our sub forum, the important info section has settings for just about all carriers. Seems like you may have already found a solution to your problem though.

Sorry for the delay, I've been taking care of off-line biz.

I was going to order P910a today off of the Sonystyle site untill I had seen that t was goign to be back ordered till Dec 15th 2005 I called them up and asked when they are going to be expecting them in as thats a LONG way off (and probably wrong)...

the person is going to call me back when he finds out...

BTW, you can get the 910a from mobileplanet for $669.95.

u can get it for 669.99 at letstalk.com

Posted by: WirelessAndy

I just read MobilePlanet's return policy- something I always read, because you just never know:

MobilePlanet Return Policy

No returns! Zip! Nada!

The policies at LetsTalk appear much more reasonable (Let's Talk's return policies *link*) and currently cheaper. But I noticed the listing for the P910a is "AT&T". This isn't a BRANDED one, is it?

Let's Talk P910a page

Update/Edit: I called Let's Talk, and they say they don't sell the P910a without a contract. Oh well! Nevermind.

mobilecityonline.com also has it for $649.99 unlocked.

Posted by: L Bo

Another rather annoying issue I've come across with the p910a is I like to have my incoming call picture set to full screen, but when I turn the phone off then back on again, I must click the box again in order for it to work again.

Anyone else?

Posted by: Calculon

Hmmm.... never noticed if it does that on my phone.

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers!

Posted by: BandLeader

Hello All,

First I want to thank L Bo and all the rest of you who participate in this forum on making it a great place to get useful information on the P910. I intend on picking one up next month and have a few questions.

When it comes to computers and related gadgets, I consider myself and power user (but not a techy). My money is made USING these tech tools, not working on them. In short, I'm all about out-of-the-box functionality that also allows for very specific customization.

My questions relate to email and the pre-installed Sony Ericsson PIM.

1) One of the reasons I am interested in the P910 is for the Blackberry option. However, reading these forums has made me a bit less sure about how easy this will be to get working. In another PPC forum there was a lot of positive discussion about the Smartner push e-mail client and service. All of my e-mail accounts (8 total) are POP3, so I would be looking at the Smartner Internet Edition for Symbian. Does anybody have any experience or advice on how this works with the P910 and Cingular's MediaXpress Unlimited? Or does anybody have any experience and recommendations with other push e-mail clients?

2) I use Outlook and have mutiple folders and subfolders for both contacts and e-mails. I also have all of my contacts organized by category, and then by name/company/address/business phone/etc. within each category. Having contacts organized like this is VERY important to me as I have hundreds of contacts and don't always remember name associations of people or companies. Does the pre-installed SE PIM allow the ability to organize my contacts this way and sync seemlessly with Outlook without having to reorganize things everytime I sync? If not, can anybody recommend third-party software that will do that?

Thankx so much for your help!

Posted by: wallyn

I am using the internet edition with a 910a on attws. It works flawlessly. Yhe only drawback is that I can only use 1 pop3 account

Posted by: BandLeader

Thankx wallyn! 1 POP3 only may be a deal breaker for me. Anybody have any suggestions?

Also, does anybody have an on-the-ground experience using a P910a in Europe or Asia? I'd like to know if/how the lack of 900Mhz support limits usage there.

Posted by: captnoir

I know that with the Audiovox 5600 you can flash the rom to make it the european version, C500 I believe and have the 900 band then. Is there a way to do that with the P910a? Then I'd be able to get that 900 band when traveling abroad, still don't understand why they didn't make the thing quadband.

Posted by: Calculon

Nope.

The radio in the 910a supports 850 not 900. It's a hardware limitation.

Posted by: Bracmobil

I was wondering about the camera's capabilities etc? Anyone have any pics? Sorry, if this has already been posted and I missed it.

Posted by: dimitris

Hi everyone,

Apologies if this is a FAQ: Googling aroung didn't reveal anything so here I am:

I went into the diagnostic menu of my P910a (flip closed: up-*-down-down-*-down-*) and navigated to Information->SIM locks. The list that comes up has four entries, each with what appears like an unlocked padlock icon on the left. The entries are:

Network 5
Network subset 5
Service provider 5
Corporate 5

Am I right to assume that the unlocked icons mean there's no SIM or service provider lock on this phone? I got it with an ATTWS contract but I did try a T-mobile SIM and it worked. I'm not interested in switching US providers, but on trips to europe the ATTWS roaming charges are a joke.

Any idea what the "Corporate" [lack of] lock means?

Finally, any idea what the numbers are?

Thanks, D.

Posted by: BlueCasper

Hey guys, Im pretty new here - and Im an aussie, so most of the network stuff wont apply to me (I work for a mobile service provider so i get 25% off the RRP for the phone hehehe!)

As for programs. Im having a hard time trying to find download sites for some of the progs - namely emulators. I've done theoogle, the yahoo, the warez.

I have a million and one roms for the nes (surprisingly I own everyone of the games - mind you the actual physical games no longer work though lol) and for the super nes (same thing applies), as well as the megadrive (once again I own the games I have emulated).

Now the question is I know there isnt an SNES emulator but there is a couple nes ones. Anyone know where to download thm from?

Also, anyone know of a freeware Database creation/edit applicatioN?

the thing i don't like about the p910 is the fact that the keyboard keys does not light up when in the dark. i mean... they could of made it so that it at least grows in the dark

This is something that seems so simple to do, since the keyboard on the phone lights up. Seems like they could've made the keyboard keys more see-thru so that light would come thru them and light up for night-typing.

Just my $0.02.

I have a Tmo sim in my p900 and compared it to cingular and to be honest, cingular blows tmo outta the water in my house which has a similiar problem to haywoods (I live on a tree lined block).

Since I received my p910a ( I call her cutie), I only whip out the stylus for something that requires that the flip be open (deleting muliple emails, sms and mms). The good thing about the short cuts on the phone is that you can pick which ones you use frequently and have them instantly available. I never used the jog dial so much before.

On a side note: I dont like that I need to open the flip to create an email. I'd like to be able to whip that out and get to typing (as previously stated, my fingers are too big for the tiny keyboard).

Until haywood mentioned it, I couldnt figure out why my battery would drain so fast!! That 850 gets work around these parts!! :laughs:

Getting the 910i would only be a plus if you travel alot. If you spend alot of time here in the US, then stick with the p910a.

I've heard people complain about a buzzing in the treo 600, but I've never had that problem with the 900 or the 910. The only problem I've heard is network related (wind like sound during silence or something relative).

Working on 850...does that explain why, here in Southern California, my PDA2k says Cingular on it...when in fact I have T-mobile service? Is that the deal? It just latches on to whoever has the better signal?

Hope this helps, good luck with your choice.

How is that s710 treating you anyway? You ever miss having a smart phone?

Posted by: bull_paqqy

It by far has the best RF of any phone I've had to date, including 6620, 6230. The only thing I have to get use to is not having the keypad available at all times. But it's a keeper. I can't see any phones on the horizon that would make me get rid of it.

By the way, has anyone tried handyday 2005 professional? I kinda like it. No complaints ...... YET.

I just purchased an unlocked one from Impact Wireless. Just got it today via courier! I LOVE it!

I tested everything today... internet, pop3 email, sms, mms, WAP, and signal strength etc. Awesome! I don't know why some people think it sucks! They need their head examined! I have used Pocket PC for awhile and I am willing to give up the ppc to use this one converged device! It has everything I need and more! My only complaint is a slightly sluggish OS... notice I said slightly.... I can live with it because if it was a faster processor, then I'd be complaining about battery life, and so far the battery kicks butt, even with BT on!

Impact Wireless has them for 799 CDN - pretty good for us in Canada... with no chance of duty being tacked on. Thats about USD - but again if I had bought one in the US cheaper, I'd have had to dealt with duty on top of taxes plus higher shipping across the boarder, and likely longer wait time for delivery.

I am a happy camper tonight!

Does anyone know if Sony Ericsson gives discounts to Cingular employees?

Posted by: pari_jun

Hello all,

I am a mobile newbie (never ever had one despite being a bit of a gadget freak) I work from how and was only too happy to be unreachable but my boss and job make it an absolute necessity.

I really love the look and functionality of the p910 and i can have it (whoopee) if and only if i can get it to sync notes using syncml. The bossman will not budge on this. Is there an application that will let me do so?

The P910a manual says, contacts, calendar, and todo under syncml (remote synchronization)

Does symbian have something? Or Sony Ericsson? Has some programming guru of my dreams written an application?

Pretty please with sugar on top help me. Thank you.

Maybe it's the firmware update.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the great info here. I'm about to upgrade from my trusty old P900 to the P910, and I have the choice of buying a P910i, or for about $30 more, buying a P910a. I know that the "a" was released specifically for use in N. America, so I'm wondering if there are problems with the "i" in the US? I'm in CA on T-Mobile. Thanks for any opinions/recommendations.

Posted by: yetis

I have the i over the a for one specific reason. The i is the only version that Blackberry functions will work on. The manual was in spanish, but not the end of the world.

Posted by: beowulf

Thanks to everyone who chimed in on my "a" vs. "i" question. I ultimately went for the 910a because I heard from a number of sources that the "a," with it's support for 850Mhz here in the states, gets a stronger signal inside buildings. A weak signal in my home has been a chronic problem with my P900, and also with my P800 before that, so I'm hoping the 910a will finally let me reliably use my phone when working at home. I also got a great price on a new unlocked 910a on eBay, $520 w/a 128mb MS duo included. It should arrive tomorrow; I'm psyched!

Hi to all…
Im new to this forum my main reason for joining is to clear some doubts I have about p910.
All the posts have been really helpful, but I have had a hard time finding info about editing/creating word excel documents. Can anyone share their thoughts on this ?
The main reason for me to by this phone is its alleged ability to create excel documents and email on the go.
I work as a consultant and editing documents and reading/sending emails onsite is crucial for me.
Any info is appreciated.

Well my copy of the software works.... and I do not have troble connecting ever! I can sync and backup any time I want to!

Did you try reinstalling? Or if your copy is maybe corrupted, go to the Sony site and download from there and try it?

If your trouble lies with the actual syncing and backing up... then there are a few tricks: Outlook MUST be set as the default mail app (when I go to sync, I just set it as the default for a few mins then switch back to my normal app (mozilla thunderbird) Another trick is that when you first install the software and drivers (two... one for the cable and one for the phone... and it will ask you to install both! don't assume the second is just trying to repeat the first!) DO NOT plug in the phone OR usb sync station until AFTER you install the drivers and software! (This is VERY important, but often overlooked and this ends up causing driver probs)

Unless you have some obscure version of Windows XP or something we dont know about... then the software should work just fine if you install correctly and make Outlook the default mail app. I dont know why so many have trouble, but I am guessing its one of those things..... I seriously have NEVER had trouble connecting at all or syncing!

Good luck!

Posted by: BandLeader

Synergie1,

Thankx for your resonse and suggestions. After 4 agonizing days of dealing with this problem (and dozens of uninstall/reinstall/reboots), I tried your suggestion of unpulugging the Sync Station and the uninstalling the Sync Station drive and all of SE's PC Suite (just to see if it would magically work now that someone else said it should, the way computers tend to do). Then I reistalled everything BEFORE plugging in the Sync Station and phone again. Still doesn't work.

My problem is apparently rare, but not unique. Here's the problem in a nutshell:

In order to sync or back up the phone using SE software, there are a few applications that must be working correctly. Phone Connection Link is the actual driver for the sync station. Mobile Phone Monitor is the sync/back-up/software install utility for SE. On my system, Phone connection link works fine and always immediately recognizes the phone when docked in the sync station. But that's only half the equation. Mobile phone Monitor must then recognize the connection and start automatically. In my case, though the connection is recongized the Phone Connection Link, Mobil Phone Monitor will not recognize the connection unless it is the first time the phone has been connected since start-up or reboot. Syncing is possible then. However, if the connection is disrupted (due to either taking the phone off of the cradle or having the phone reboot, as which happens when backing-up), Mobile Phone Monitor will no longer recognize the connection. This makes performing back-ups impossible, and syncing only possible ONCE with reboot.

I have researched this THOROUGHLY and found no known solution. My firewall is allowing all associate programs, including mRouterRuntime MFC Application, to run. My hypothosis for a cause is that a previously installed version of Mobile Phone Monitor (which came with SE's XTENDConnection software) did not uninstall properly and left some corrupted registry keys behind. (I uninstalled XTENDConnect AFTER I installed the P910's PC suite.) Installing the P910's PC suite with its upgraded version of Mobile Phone Monitor is confusing the system somehow. I am not savy enough to know what registry keys need editing.

So, I'm stuck. This problem does not occur on any other system here (none had XTENDConnect on them). SE customer support says there's nothing the can do. So I have three choices as I see it:

1) Buy a new PC (or cave into pressure from certain friends to buy a Mac)
2) Format my harddrive and reinstall everything from scratch
3) Find some other software that will allow me to sync (back up will still have to be done on another computer).

I'm considering MightyPhone's over-air syncing, but I'd rather stay the wired route for now. So, if anybody has a suggestion for a great sync utility...

What's the best price now for the Sony P910a, I've found $480 range, but I've heard people get lower, any help would be appreciated.

Someone mentioend buying direct from sony you get the free headset, I can't seem to locate the free headset deal.

Thanks

Any help on any deals going on? Or if I should wait for the next phone in line?

FYI I reda on a description:

The built-in antenna is a reasonable performer and works on networks both in and outside of the USA. The P910i works on T-Mobile and all international GSM networks while the P910a variant will work on Cingular, T-Mobile, and on many international networks - but not all of them.

So, I'm not sure now, is P910a better buy?

Thanks.

jzipk,

To answer your question about the "better buy" betweem the P910i and the P910a, it really depends on your needs and carrier. The P910a uses the 850Mhz band as its lowest frequency, where as the P910i uses the 900MHz. Cingular is the only GSM carrier to support 850Mhz in the US. 850Hz is not supported outside the US as far as I know. T-Mobile uses the 900MHz band as it's lowest frequency. (It should be noted that in some areas Cingular does use 900MHz.)

The advantage to having a P910 that can support 850MHz is that this band generates better reception indoors. I have a P910a using Cingular and get great reception just about anywhere, but most notably in buildings or structures (like parking garages) where I would frequently lose the signal with other phones and/or other carriers.

The disantage to having a P910a is that, as you quoted earlier, it will not work (or work well) in all parts of Europe, where the most common frequencies used as 900, 1800, & 1900. Both P910 support 1800MHz and 1900Mhz, so if you're traveling in Europe, there's still a good chance that you'll be just fine.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, it does help. I have T-Mobile in the U.S. right now, so I mean P910a would work fine. But one thing I've noted is that I have not seen many retailers sell the P910i -- unless someone knows where I can get it for less than $500

Nope, Rogers uses the 850 band.

Bringin' this one back from the dead... it's been about a year since the first P910 owners have had their phones... what's your experience been? I'm considering getting this one--any long-term issues? I've been reading that there's some menu lag on the phone--how bad is it?

Other things such as scratched screens and all--is the screen durable? If you drop it as one might do getting out of a car, does it survive?

Absolutely amazing phone. In 13 years of wireless use and countless phones this is the best phone I've had the pleasure of using. Despite the big screen and somewhat delicate appearance, it is one tough handset. I've dropped it twice from about waist height and it has come through without a scratch.

I use a screen protector in order to keep the screen pristine.

Despite all the new models always coming out none come close to tempting me to replace my 910a.

I couldn't agree more. I started with the SE P800 and was always looking for the upgrade to replace the current model. Not so with my P910a. It does everything I want it to do, and it does it well. I'm not even cosidering going to the P990 because I don't want a smaller screen. I also recommend that you get the 910a instead of any other letter-rev because it really does have a stronger signal here in the US. My in-home reception improved greatly when I upgraded to the 910a from the P900.

I have had my P910a for a little over a year and love just about everything about it. Recently, however, as I have begun to do more online with it, like checking email and surfing a bit, I have been getting very frustrated with the slow browsing speed. Now that Cingular is rolling out their HSDPA I would love SE to release a P series phone to utilize this new service. Also, as I do more and more email I would really like a better keyboard, something along the lines of the HTC Wizard series of phones would be really nice. Of course I don't want to lose the keypad as I still will use the new device primarily as a phone.

I have seen the P990, but am less than thrilled with the design as the keyboard does not seem like a major improvement to the P910, other than its placement on the body of the phone. A communicator style device with a swiveling screen ala the HTC Universal but the same size as the P910 would be ideal. Maybe the P1200, or whatever the new rumors are calling it now, will fit the bill. Only time will tell, but in the meantime I'm still happy with P910a.

Yes, the P910 keyboard is virtually useless, but then, I consider all the small keyboards on the devices that have them to be useless. I can input text faster with the stylus than by using one of those micro-keyboards. That's why I won't buy a Phone/PDA without some form of writing recognition. I've been able to speed up input even more by using a shareware product called eZiTap. It adds predictive word selection to the handwriting recognizer; very cool and useful utility.

Sounds great, where does one obtain this eZiTap shareware?

Thanks - Bikedog

I don't believe that Yahoo allows email downloads via pop3 "unless" you have paid for Yahoo Mail Plus ($19.99 yr). Any mail service that allows pop3 downloads; your own ISP or even Google's gmail ... will work on the P910a. Works VERY well for me, LOVE this phone!

I do have the paid yahoo pop3, with t-mobile I'm trying to figure out the smtp and pop settings

Yahoo! has a pretty good help section that would have told you this:

POP: pop.mail.yahoo.com
SMTP: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
