Hey guys I have a 99 Altima GXE; the other day I had my oil changed at Brakemasters, and they tell me that i need to replace my transmission oil fluids.. They wants to charge me $80 bucks.. I was like Good lord thats a lot of money. I know the car needs it but is it cheaper to do on my own,or take it to my local shop? Or should i just have them "professionally" do it?

That seems pretty reasonable, they will drain the old fluid, flush the trans and change the trans filter. It can be messy if you do it yourself. I do mine myself because I have a hoist.

You might want to ask them what they do exactly with their "transmission service."

There are 3 options,

They will drain the fluid and refill it.

They will hook it up to a machine and do a flush-by.

They will do the flush-by and in addition, drop the transmission pan and replace/clean the filter and gasket.

Depending on the mileage on your car, a flush would be recommended over a drain and fill concerning that your Altima is a 99.

Doing this regularly should preserve the transmission for the life of the car (with occasional hard driving mixed in)

^ i was just about to say that.

if you do it yourself you not doing much. tranny fluid in a normal car is about 7 quarts. 3.5 in the pan and 3.5 in the differtial. You can drain all your tranny fluid from the pan easily but you can get the stuff out of the differtial by your self.

$80 is cheap for a complete flush and new filter gasket and what not.

make sure their doing what their suppose to be doing
also ask them to use factory tranny fluid (nissan fluids)....

How many miles do you have? If you got lots of miles and tranny fluid has never been changed, don't get a flush. Anyways do the work yourself, always cheaper and you know you did it right.
