Wondering if anyone here has bought the SMT 5600 from amazon. Interested in how long it took to get to you and if it was activated or you had to set it up yourself? Thanks for any info.

It took three days for mine to arrive. I ordered my phone and paid for next day air. I got an email the following day from Amazon telling me that AT&T needed more information. I called AT&T and the phone was shipped the next day. I received it the following day. I had to call AT&T to have it activated.

Thanks for the info. How is the phone working for you?

I absolutely love it. I had the mpx220 and returned it because of the low volume issues. I had a hard time making that decision because I prefer the flip style. I don't have problems hearing on the phone (5600) and people can hear me. I also noticed when playing video (I convert dvd movies and play them on the phone) they don't show garbled on the 5600 like they did on the mpx220. I like the fact that the screen is a little larger also. One thing I noticed is it does take a long time to find a signal sometimes. It says "searching...." for a minute or so before it can find one. I will call AT&T one day to see if they can assist with that but it doesn't happen much.

I'm now having a problem where they are saying that att & amazon are having a technical issue activating the phone. That I should call amazon with the imei of the phone and the phone number, yet they haven't even sent me the phone yet. They also mention the data plan item, which I didn't get online, so I'm wondering if that is an issue now, they even said it might be. Was yours similar?

My situation was different. Amazon sent an email (with an application number) stating that I need to contact AT&T to give them more information to activate the account. I called AT&T and gave them the application number. The guy did not ask for any additional information he just told me he was going to approve the account. I called Amazon the next day and they shipped the phone right out.

I actually had the same thing, contacted amazon and then they came back with the other email. Weird thing though, I haven't even received the phone yet, it's shipping anytime now. That's why them asking for the IMEI number is weird, I'll have to call on monday. Att actually said everything was fine and ready to go, so I'm not sure what is going on.

I would try to call Amazon before Monday if I were you. I don't know what the problem is but I just got the following email today from Amazon:
" Greetings from Amazon.com.
We have been notified by AT&T Wireless that the wireless phone you recently ordered has been activated. If it has not shipped already, your phone will ship shortly; when it does, you will receive an e-mail confirming the date, contents, and method of shipment.
For your reference, here is your new wireless phone number:

If you have questions regarding your wireless service, we encourage you
to
call AT&T Wireless directly. You can reach AT&T customer service at
1-800-888-7600 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Thank you for shopping at Amazon.com, and we hope to see you again.
Sincerely,

I've had the phone and used it for almost 2 weeks now!!!

Thanks for the advice. Also, do you happen to know what if any hassles their are if you change plans once you buy it from amazon? I ask because I might do so, but curious if att will want me to get a data plan on the phone when amazon didn't require it?

When I called AT&T to activate the phone they asked me what plan I wanted. They seemed to have no record of the plan that I had selected on Amazon's website at the time of order. No pressure at all to select a specific data plan although he sales person at AT&T mentioned that I needed one. I selected the 4mb plan.

Wow, they had no plan on file for you. Hell, I just got an email telling me my new phone number and that activation has now went through. Weird thing though, I logged onto attws site to check out my account and it has the weirdest minutes shown. Good to know about the data thing, mind if I ask if you use yours much? Difference in that vs. mMode?
Posted by: forest007
I don't use mine much at all. I go days without accessing the internet. I've used almost half of the 4 mb in about 3 weeks. I have downloaded about 3 ringtones. I've checked my email from Yahoo's website. I've looked around a little at some of the ringtones available and some other stuff. I could not get a answer to the question about the difference between the internet plans and the mmode plans. I asked the AT&T sales rep. He gave me some vague answer. Basically smartphones need an internet plan is all I got out of him. I did not ask any more questions because I got the plan that I needed. By the time I got the email from Amazon with my new phone number (number assigned by AT&T) I had already received the phone, called, had that number changed to a number ported over from another provider, and used the phone for almost 2 weeks.

Just received my 5600. I noticed one thing interesting, when I search for networks, cingular doesn't showu up yet, not here in mn. ALthough, I can choose t-mobile which I thought someone said that wasn't possible, anyone else have this happened?

My experience was very similar to Forest007 except without the ATT phone call. I purchase the 'vox 5600 on Amazon after returning the MPX220 to Best Buy due to volume issues (I could not hear them, they could not hear me, could not hear the ring, could not catch ring on vibrate mode, etc.). I upgraded my shipping from 2-3 day service to 1 day a few hours after I ordered it. It was on backorder and said ~2 weeks expected delivery.
The phone surprisingly arrived a few days later before the Amazon email with phone number or anything. It arrived on a Friday and I could not get it to activate. I called ATT and they transferred me to Amazon, but the support folks in India told me the wireless phone people had already gone home for the weekend. She made account notes and requested an email.
I left the phone on all day Saturday and still no activation. On a whim, I turned it on late Sunday afternoon and whammo, it was activated. I got a support response email from Amazon Monday, but told them I was good to go. I got the standard "here is your new number" email late Monday or Tuesday after I had been using my phone a couple of days. I think the upgrade to impatient overnight service got my phone to me before the programming was complete.
I got in right before Amazon started requiring a data plan, and I would not be an ATT customer if that had been forced. So far good coverage with the 850/1800/1900. I had tried ATT with an N-gage of my kids (no 850 band) and it was not good here (fringe area), so I'm pleased with the 850 band and relatively seamless transistion from ATT to Cingular to unkown towers (t-mobile?).
I really like the phone. Only one small downside is sometimes I think the flip phone form factor would be nice, but this thing packs so much in a package so small I may end up liking it better than a flip.
My 2 cents
