(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey guys i just got an SX1 but it's the chinese version! Is there anyway to change it to english from the menus? or do i really need to flash it or something? It seems to be a great phone and all (i finally figured out the radio!) but i don't wanna let it go because i can't read the menus

Hi there. The only thing I can think of is to check the variant on your phone by pressing *#06# and press the 'right' softkey to get more info. I know it's in Chinese but you might be able to see the Variant in there, example SX1C_C-CHINA-DOMESTIC-zh-ch or SX1_C-TAIWAN-RETAIL-zh-tw or SX1C_C-HONGKONG-RETAIL-zh-hk. Dowload the right firmware for your phone by going to www.siemens-mobile.com and you should be able to flash your phone in English. That's what I can think of for now as a solution. Any problems regarding updating your firmware, you can check one of my threads. Hope this works for you.

hey thanks for replying. i guess i'm a noob in the siemens threads. i got my SX1 yesterday from a trade with my beat up E715. so far the phone is great cept the chinese part. i did the *#06# and i got SX1C_C-HONGKONG-RETAIL-zh-hk and my SVN is 06. the thing is also that the data cable wasn't included (even though the cd-roms were)

i went to the site but then it says that i have to have the same Rolf Variant Name for upgrading the new firmware. so if i do that wouldn't it still be the hong kong retail one?

and a another question. does it matter which kind of cable i do get? usb/serial/oem/non-oem? i'm thinking about getting a mmc card for it too, but if i can't get it to english there's no point i guess. but is it possible to transfer songs directly to the mmc card in the SX1 with a regular cable without the need of a mmc card reader/writer?

thanks for the help!

Well, the only downside to this is you don't have the USB for the phone but you can purchase a USB cable through EBAY or check out this site www.orangewavewireless.com as they are located in Vancouver and carries Siemen SX1. They might carry the USB cable for SX1 or you can visit their store and have the phone flashed by them but you will end up paying the same amount as getting a USB cable so I recommend the cable instead. You can be able to download pictures, mp3s and upgrade your phone from your computer.

The firmware available now is 12 and believe me, it's worth upgrading your phone from Variant 6. It's an excellent phone once you get it going.

The variant you need to download is SX1C_C-HONGKONG-RETAIL-zh-hk. I just checked out this variant and yes, you can flash your phone to English. Also, regarding the USB, you have to get the proper USB cable for SX1. You can't just use any USB cable as the pins should match where you charge your phone. You should get an MMC card as well since the built in memory in the phone is not big enough. I got a 128 MMC through EBay for less than 20 dollars CAD. I have tons of pictures, games, applications and 10 mp3 files and still I have room for a lot of stuff. You can go higher than 128 if you want to use your SX1 as an mp3 player as well. I have my mini Ipod so I don't intend of using my phone as an MP3 player.

About transferring MP3s to your MMC, I think you have to go through the SX1 Data Suite to be able to put MP3 files in your MMC. Then again, you have to use the SX1 USB Cable and you need to install the CD-ROM that came with the phone in your computer.

Here's my thread about problems you might encounter when trying to upgrade the firmaware of your SX1. http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=492678

Thanks. Anymore questions, you can PM me on this site. GOOD LUCK!

i went all around vancouver, richmond, and burnaby today. they all don't seem to have the cable for sale at all for some reason! and there were only 2 places that flashed it, once charged $50 and the other $75 so definately i'll get a cable myself and do it.

just out of curiosity which was the cable that came with the SX1? is it the DCA-510, 512, or 540?

I'm not sure what type of USB cable came with the phone but the USB cable is also compatible with the following models: Siemens C65 CV65 M65 S65 SL65

You can check this site out: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...6335775275&rd=1

I'm not sure of any carrier that actually carry these cellphones but if they do, they should be able to have the USB cable for sale.

Ok, let's try this and see if this works:

Press the key just below the joystick (menu), then choose the picture of the tool box with a wrench in it (english for setup), and then click on the wrench (english for settings), and then choose the phone with the wrench (english for phone). Choose the first highlighted in yellow and then choose again the first highlighted and then go down and choose the third option in language (hopefully it's in English) and see if the phone will create English menus on it. On my phone, the first choice is Automatic, second is Deutsch, third is English and fourth is Russian.

Let me know if this works.

hey thanks again for the help, but it's still all in chinese i'm trying to search around the net for the DCA-540 there are some places that have it, but the shipping is insane since it's all coming from europe. i guess i trust oem more than non-oem. hey just wondering since we're both located in vancouver do you think it's possible if i could borrow your cable for just a day or 2 so i can flash it to english or something?

Hi there. Unfortunately, I'm away for a year so I'm not in Vancouver. What is your e-mail address?

Posted by: LiQuiK

wow a whole year

check your PM for my email

you don't need to flash anything. Mine came set to Chinese language too. I started experimenting with the menus, then called the outfit I bought the phone from, and they led me through it.

Don't see the SVN or Rolf Variant Name in the phone Info (*#06#)

I can look at the box after work.

I don't know if you can find the variant info on the box. It's usually in the phone. What are the instructions given to you in able to change the phone's language to English?

And you don't have an SX1!
