How to connect my laptop to the internet with an MPx220?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I want to connect to the internet on my laptop using my mpx220. i dont want to pay cingular like 70 bucks a month for their laptop to phone connection deal, cant i just hook up my phone via usb or bluetooth?

Posted by: yakky

Yep, the instructions are in the owners manual. I've even got my Sony Clie (Palm) using the mpx-220's GPRS connection

Posted by: myke

alright ive checked the manual, theres just a couple things i need clarified..

p.85 - When it says to type in the new initialization string, it says "Change the APN name as needed". What is an APN name and what should I change it to?

also,

p.85 - it says "Under Telephone Numbe type the codes your network administrator provides, uncheck area codes and dialing rules.." What is this code I need? Is there just a general cingular mpx220 code I can use?

thanks!

You should not have to change any settings on your phone assuming you bought it from Cingular.

You can use windows dial up networking to connect with your bluetooth connection.

Enter *99# as the number to dial, leave the user name and password fields blank. Assuming you installed your bluetooth modem drivers correctly then you should be able to connect.

wap.cingular
*99#
Also make sure you have wait for dial tone unchecked. For user and password, check the v600 sticky in the moto section.

When I download the driver and attach my MPx220 to the USB, the Device Manager finds it under a new entry "Windows CE USB Devices" and not under Modems.

Under that entry there is no Diagnostics tab and I cannot Query Modem.

Any suggestions on what I need to do to get the MPx220 to act as a modem.

I am running Windows XP Professional w/SP2.

Sounds like you're not turning the modem "on" in the phone...go to Start/more/more/more/Accessories/Modem Link, click Menu, Activate. Then see if Windows sees it as a Modem.

Oh...for some bizzare reason, don't click "done" in the Modem Link screen after you activate it...that exits and deactivates it. Either click the home key, the end key, or the "back" key.

HTH's, and take it easy---

Would you mind sharing how you setup the connection with your clie? I have a Clie UX50 and i'm trying to use the mpx220 as a bluetooth modem. It used to work with my nokia 3650, but I cant get it to work with the mpx220. In connection settings when I try to find the mpx220 it will not connect to it. I've tried it with the phone in discoverable mode, and "on" mode and neither works.

from what the instruction manual sounds like, you can only use the phone as a modem with USB and IR... which doesnt make sense, but a lot of stuff doesnt make sense with the mpx220

Good idea. When you are done, do not click "done".

Thanks for the tip. It really works.

I have done that and I can see the Motorola USB Modem device in the device manager now.

My questions are

1. can i use gprs dial-up with the *99# if i don't have a data plan? i have just been using pay per use WIX.

2. can i dial my own ISP (regular telephone number)?

I have tried both and have not been successful with either.

Thanks.

I was going to get an MPX 220 next month but this is an important issue for me. I just assumed that you could use it as a wireless modem for a laptop or PPC device using bluetooth. Is this definitely not the case?

Posted by: ClarkG

So, if you use the USB cable and phone to connect to the internet are you actually charged anything? If I use this during my free nights and weekends will I be charged a fee or does it just use the free minutes?

Just wondering. I got a MPx220 this week and wont be using it for 3 more weeks.

Posted by: craigg

You can use the MPX220 to tether to a laptop via bluetooth. As I posted earlier, you need to install the correct bluetooth drivers (I use the Widcomm bluetooth modem driver) and then simply use windows built in dial up networking.

Use the v600 instructions but change the init string to the one recommended in the MPX220's owners manual.

Folks, I'm having a problem that probably bhas a simple answer, but for the life of me I can't figure this out, so I'm asking you all for help. :-)

I'm trying to get 2 different computers to use bluetooth for communicating with the Internet through my mpx220 phone and WIX service. I know you have to add an init string to configure the APN and such for the phone, before you do the dial.

But on my Windows XP systems, there doesn't seem to be any place to add the string (for the bluetooth modem). This is true on both systems, though both have bluetooth adapters that use Widcomm software.

So, does anyone here have such a configuaration, and where did you add the init string for the bluetooth modem?

Thanks,
Mike

I'm not seeing consistent info here. One person says leave the modem settings as they are. Another person says to put the manual's connection string in there.

Also, I followed the instructions and was not able to dial up. I tried *99#, *99##2 (found in another thread), I tried blank username/password, I tried user wap@cingular.com password cingular1. Nothing works. Then after a while, my phone just turns off by itself.

The username ad password are case sensitive, and these are the correct ones.
WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
CINGULAR1

The possible dial strings *99#, , *99**1#, *99**2#, or *99**3#. You may need to add the initialization string as well.

Is this free? does it use minutes?

Posted by: cblaze230

can someone post a link or step by step instruction for successful ux-50 and mpx220 internet connecting. been going crazy for the threads and how to's. thanks in advance.

yakky...you said the info is in v600 sticky. how bout a shove in the right direction? please

Posted by: juliej5

I had mine tethered before, and now I am getting an error. I followed the directions on Omega's blog originally, but now I am getting an error code of ISP connecting properly but IPX/SPX or compatible CP error 733 - a connection to the remote connection could not be made. then it says I can connect as is, or disconnect. WHAT IS THAT?

Posted by: Omega2008

Cingular could be blocking it......not sure...I will test.

Posted by: Omega2008

I just did a Modem Connection via BT and it is working fine. Double check your settings or try again, I got a error the first time but the second time it worked.

Posted by: juliej5

I may have screwed something up...It is showing that the standard motorola bluetooth modem is connected, but not the USB. Then I activated the modem in the phone, and now I still get the error, but when I ignore it, it will connect me at 115.2 kbs I was trying with all my might to get my HS810 to work as a microphone with my laptop, but I failed at that too...

Posted by: Omega2008

You have to have the Widcomm drivers for the BT headset to work with your computer. You need the Audio Gateway profile.

I start the connection from the computer by going to Start, Connections, Name of the connection and click dial....works fine. I don't have to put the phone in "Modem Mode" by Going to Start, Accessories Modem Link.

Posted by: juliej5

I did have the widcomm drivers. Or I had them, Im checking that. As for the dial up, should I just ignore that error? And is it ok that the USB modem is not showing as connected, but it is the standard modem for bluetooth? TY

Posted by: Omega2008

If you are using a BT connection then you don't need the USB driver enabled. When I set my connection up and go to Properties it lets me select the modem I want, I choose standard modem over bluetooth link, if I want the USB cable, I start the modem link app on the phone, plug in the cable, go to my properties for my connection and select the USB Modem.

Posted by: juliej5

OK so I will just use it as is, and ignore the error I guess. I mean, it is connecting, so I suppose the error doesn't really matter unless it is screwing with something I am not aware of...

Posted by: Omega2008

Not sure about you error...never heard of it. Have you tried restarting your computer and seeing if that solves the problem?

Posted by: juliej5

Still getting the error. It says it is connecting to TCP/IP, and asks me if I want to ignore proxy errors. Other than that it connects and seems to work ok. What should the max port speed and bps speed be set to?

Posted by: Guitar1969

Okay - I've set up my modem connection between my laptop and MPX 220 via the USB cable, and set up the int string - It shows that it has connected on both the MPX220 and the Laptop(shows data being sent back and forth), but when I try to use IE or get email through outlook on my laptop , it doesn't connect.

I am running Win 2000 pro, T-mobile, and I made sure all firewalls are turned off on the laptop, and USB driver is loaded

This should work but I can't get IE or Outlook express to properly download content from the active connections.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

If it shows your connected check your route list. I had an issue w/my Corp. VPN and Cingular both using the 10.x ip scheme. I would get connected yet not data would route properly. Solution to this was just removing the 0.0.0.0 route as my Cisco Virtual lan adapter would re-create the route list. I may have staticly added a route. Can't remember it was a while ago.

Start>run>cmd>route print

and repost your results while connected to the phone and gprs DUN conenction.

Posted by: Guitar1969

I actually got it working another way - The pop3 connection worked off the bat for email after fiddling with it, so I figured it had to be something to do with T-mobile's port blocking thing (I am on T-zones), so I set up the MPX220 modem connection to use a proxy server(port 8080) for IE on my laptop and now its working.

Thanks for your help,
mh
