Purchase SMT 5600 w/o Contract

Anyone had any success purchasing a SMT 5600 from AT&T w/o a contract? I was shot down at each of 2 stores. They said they would not sell them w/o a contract. I am w/ T-Mobile so obviously I don't want to sign a contract. Is eBay/online purchase my only option?

Thanks in advance!

I think so - or you should know someone in the store. Amazon has it for 350 and ebay anywhere from 270 to 320

Exact same thing happened to me! A month or two ago, when the SMT had just come out, I stopped by AT&T Wireless corporate store to check it out, and the helpful staff member would have sold it to me for the full price ($350 I believe) w/o any contract or service with AT&T. But now when I went into the store, the 4 imbeciles working in a completely empty store during lunch hour claimed that their jobs would be terminated if they sold one w/o contract.

Last time I checked, my money is still good at Amazon.com, so that is where it will go.

I got one off eBay for $315 shipped. I guess that is better than $319.99 + tax at AT&T or $349.99 at Amazon. Now I just need to unload my iPaq 2210.

Is the 5600 actually unlocked?

This is what you do.
Buy the phone from amazon.com, get the rebate, then pay the ETF. 155+40 first month and then 30 second month when you switch down the plan plus 25 for the phone = around 250.

How do you get 155 + 40 first month? I thought the phone was like 225 then you are forced a 30.00 internet package by amazon, 36 activation charge + minimum 20 phone voice package. Would you mind letting us know the exact charges ? Thanks, George

Here is exactly what I did. I wanted to use this phone on my existing Cingular account but no one knows if Cingular will sell this phone.

Phone from Amazon = ~225.00
Rebates with 2 yr agreement make phone on amazon = -~25.00
1 month service = ~40 (whatever the cheapest is)
Activation fee = 36
Service + Activation = 76.00 minus 25.00 = 51.00
etf fee = 175.00
175.00 + 51.00 = 226 for phone w/o contract
If you need it unlocked = ~39.00

I did not have to sign up for a data plan. The Amazon website went screwy when I placed my order so I had do do the ordering manually through a service rep. She upgraded me to overnight shipping for free and didn't make me purchase a data plan.

or

Purchase the phone from Amazon for the 225 then cancel the service before the 30 day window is up and keep the phone. I dunno if this will work or if ATTWS will charge you the difference between the two prices (w/contract ,w/o contract)

I used to do that with sprint and all they would do is make you pay the activation fee and a prorate of the mounth and never mentioned anything about returning the phone. although never tried this with ATT.

but once you factor in the prorate/activation/tax you can almost get one off ebay for that price and not have to deal with the hassel. thankfully I found a friend of mine is hooking me up with one for 225 shipped so I patiently waiting
