midi direct ringtones

Hi all, I am new to the cdm 9900 and this site.
My question for all you guru's is if you download a .mid file from one of those free sites, can you just mail it to yourself at my#@verizon.com and get the sound in to your ringtones? Does anyone have a step-by-step guide on how I would do this? I got all the other posts on converting ringtones etc, but if you get them for free, why bother, I say.
