Just Snagged a 1G MS Pro Duo. :) Bigger = Better ?

I managed to snag a Sony High-Speed 1G Memory Stick Pro Duo yesterday after putting in an order for some 512mbs for a m8. I assumed it would have arrived a bit sooner then that, but this is early enough for me. It's not a shocker that this 1G pricing is super inflated though. I only managed to get one at a little less then 140 GBP, so Sony will be making a killing on it until competing manufacturers start to release them. It does save the convenience of having to purchase several 512mbs though which at this point I already have 4 of including (35) 128mb MSDs. However, I'm not quite sure what this means in terms of utilization. I'm still waiting for software developers to take advantage of the expanded memory potential of the P910.

With that said, I wonder what lies in store for the P910. Being that I've already maxed out its capacity I wonder if SE will leave larger media capacity potential to is successor. I'm guessing by the time a 2G + MS Pro Duo gets released (more likely Q2-Q3 of 2005) it will be right in time for the P910 successor to start making waves in mobile news.

On the other hand, those spare MSDs (128mb - 512mb) laying around the house will come in handy for a soon to be released Sony toy... I'm expecting to grab my MSD PRO compatible Sony PSP in exactly 3 1/2 weeks. It's amazing that Sony is only packaging it with a 32 MSD, but that shouldn't pose an issue for most Pxxx owners that more likely already have a few around. So keep those MSDs around for keeps sakes. I'm sure you'll find good uses for them as I will in my case.

You filthy bastid!!

I've been looking high and low for one and came to the conclusion that I wont find it locally and the internet was the only way. Thus began the chase to achieve the 512Mb.

I picked it up at CompUSA for $130 tax incl. Personally, I dont use that much memory so this size will do for my MP3's, pics and home videos.

Did I mention I hate you? If not, I really do. No no, really I do.

Love you too... Don't sell your 128mb MSD m8. At least not yet. It will come in handy very soon. Not sure if you plan on picking up a Sony PSP soon, but I guarantee you'll regret dumping your old sticks. Only 3-1/2 more weeks until I can feel like a kid again before I get my hands on one. I gather by the time the rest of the world gets a PSP MSDs will be a highly sought after commodity..

By the way, Sony is the only manufacturer that has released a 1G MS Pro Duo right now. I noticed there was a thread above this one regarding these sticks and someone mentioned Sandisk. Sandisk's release date is TBD.

I sold my ps2 due to lack of use, so I cant imagine getting anything after that.

I had mentioned that Sandisk MSD actually come with the p910a. Hadnt noticed that. My 512 is also a Sandisk. I guess its the cheaper alternative.

Congrats.
-What are you gonna do with a 1 GB duo though? I got a 256 Hmmm, widescreen .avi movies for smartmovie?

I managed to optimize these two full screen files below for a 512mb MS Pro Duo. Extremely smooth playback and clear picture resolution. I'm guessing I now have room for more or better yet tons of programs. Although I'm still waiting for a developer to release that one program that require tons of data storage...

Oooh, nice man. I only got a 256 MB card. Think you can hook me up with your rips?

my friends p910 came with a sandisk 32msd. hehe i was like yo the place that sold u the phone ripped u off. hehe maybe i was wrong?

Posted by: L Bo

Yes you were. SE is sending them out like that.

Posted by: BigFeat

All P910s were shipped with Sandisk Duos. Including P910is. With that said, being that Memory Stick is an open platform technology and SE is technically a separate entitity from Sony I guess they went with the company that could deliver the cheapest cost. In this case, apparently Sandisk must have won the bid. Needless to say it doesn't make the MSD any inferior that that of Sony's. All MSDs are going to be forced to work the exact same way in a Pxxx regardless of its taglines like 'high speed' or manufacturer. The Pxxx doesn't know how to treat them any different whereas that may not be the case for other devices like PDAs,PPCs, or Digi Cams.

Man... I SO could USE the 1Gig MS Pro Duo. I currently have a SanDisk 512MB (cuz its cheaper) and it's FULL! Cuz I jammed all my non-system applications, Mp3s, Pictures and Movies on the MS. I used SmartMovie to convert my DVDRip of StarWars Episode II. The Full Episode II movie with Divx 5.21 Pro encoding through smartmovie's default settings produces a 327MB file! Man.. could have up to 3 full DVD rip movies on a single 1Gig MS Pro! Of course, my bank account has to survive Xmas shopping debts before I can treat myself to one of those 1Gig sticks! Hopefully SanDisk will make a version that is cheaper or Sony will drop the prices a bit!

Oh Yeah.. my P910i that i got through SE does come with a 32MB SanDisk MS Pro Duo (weak). I guess they come that way!

Check this link on eCost.com for Sandisk Pro Duo prices (that 512 is very tempting right now):

Just checked my box, and discovered not only that I have a Sandisk stick, but also if you look at the box, it's the Sandisk which is on there too.

as tempting as the 512 is. the 1gb pro duo is less than double the price of the 2 512mbs. now that's tempting.

There's only one problem with that m8, it's a misprint... Sandisk hasn't released any 1G MSD PROs yet. Sony's was the first to hit the market and the $300 price tag is normal right now because there are no competitors yet. These idiot vendors have been known to screw up their advertising of MSDs for the past 2 yrs now. For some reason, they don't make a distiction between the two formats. That link references a 1G MS PRO. So heed my warning. Stay far away from that link..

By the way, after 1 week of playing around with my 1G stick it's already at 90% capacity... I guess bigger was necessary .. It's a good thing I have spare 512mbs laying around..

SanDisk and Sony developed the Memory Stick Duo jointly.

Why didn't Sandisk get any credit in the initial Japanese MSD press release a few years back? I remember being in Japan at the time and it was the only market where one could purchase an MSD. The press release at the time was delivered by Sony, but I do remember Sandisk and Lexar announcing their development of the medium only few months later. Although Sandisk is a bit more involved in flash memory technology though. I'm curious to find any material that elaborates on the companies that took part in the initial developement stage of the technology. However, Sony clearly grabbed the reigns on manufacturing and delivering the product to the world. Nonetheless, all the sticks behave the same regardless of the name printed on the casing.

I read about SanDisk and Sony here:

http://www.memorystick.com/en/support/faq.html

This site does not seem to elaborate any further on the subject but I have not read everything there. Good site for anything to do with memory stick technology.

Man I am jealous! I need to find a place locally that sells them. You would think in a city of 4 million people I should be able to find a source, but that is not the case.
