MPx220 Keyboard backlight / lights in general

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Has anyone figured out a fix for the keyboard backlight? I've read that it's controlled by a photosensor down next to the "*" key. If so, all three of the units I've had were broken. The keyboard backlight comes on for MAYBE 4 seconds and then turns off. I can NOT get it to stay on.

Also, every Motorola phone I've ever had that had an external power connection / car kit would turn the lights on and LEAVE them on (keypad and display backlights) as long as the phone was plugged into the external power source. The MPx220 doesn't do that. I have a car kit that it fits, don't have the HUC yet, but the cable fits the phone, all the handsfree functions work, the phone switches to the CAR proflie, and even THAT won't keep the lights on.

Any comments / help?

which car kit model if you don't mind?

thxs.

I'm afraid your phones were not broken.

The keyboard backlight on my MPX 220 only stays lit for 4 seconds, too, and I've read similar complaints here from other MPX owners.

It's really annoying. That darn light keeps going off at the most unfortunate times--like when I'm hunting for a letter while typing out an e-mail.

If there's any way to change the backlight setting, I'd REALLY like to hear about it.

It's the Motorola hard-install car kit, not the bluetooth. I'm waiting on Motorola/Cingular to release the SYN9988A HUC. Everything else in the car kit is generic, works for the V60x, Vxxx, T7xx, etc etc, just change the HUC (hang up cup).

I've exchanged my MPX220 for the same back light problem. Nothing seems to fix it. Does anyone have the new .342 firmware and have the same problem? Maybe they fixed it with the new firmware. I know, wishful thinking..........

I just got my third one from BB last night. It has the .342 firmware, same keypad / display backlight issues. The earpiece IN-CALL volume is dramatically better from the first two units I had. FWIW

Yes it's still the same with the .342 f/w

I have the AT&T version and if its dark enough the keypad light will stay with the backlight for the screen. If the lighting changes around me or I shine a light right on the sensor it'll turn on or off accordingly.

I take it back--it is NOT the same--last night I was playing with my phone and as long as you are inputting info the keypad stays lit--unlike before where it would go off in mid type--

So are you saying that if it's dark, the keypad lights up BY ITSELF, without you having to touch a key, and;

If the keypad does light up, it STAYS lit without you having to touch the kaypad?

Thanks

argg, anyone find a fix to this problem?

this is starting to really suck with all these problems with this thing...

1.30 F/W fixes the keypad/backlight/sensor bug, along with most other complaints.

theres no where I can get it is there?

If I take my phone into cingular will they replace it? lol...

I've had 3 different firmware versions to date: .325, .342, and now 1.300. On the first two, the photocell that is supposed to control the keypad light did not (in my opinion) work. The timer on the keypad backlight had a 3 second timer on it. Period.

With 1.300, the photocell does turn the keypad backlight on in low light situations (if the screen backlight is also lit). The keypad backlight is also NOW controlled by the screen backlight timer.

Now, if the lights would only come on and STAY on when the phone is plugged into a charger/car kit, (like every OTHER Motorola phone that I ever owned did) they would have it whipped.

i have .343 from at&t. i just covered the sensor directly below the "*" key and the keypad stayed lit until I took my finger off the sensor, it was for more than 30 seconds. so, depending the light situation, it seems to be fixed, in my phone at least.

Speaking of the key back lighting, do the right hand keys, 3, 6, 9 & # light up completely now? On the initial version I had from BB, the right half of these keys (such as the e and f on the 3 key) would not be illuminated and thus it was tough to see the outside half of those keys in the dark.

Thanks for any update.

You could aways put a small piece of opaque tape over the sensor.

yep, all keys light up, though i still think the "3" could be a tad bit better, but all ok.

No, come to think of it, when you look at those keys the D E F, M N O and W X Y Z are only partially lit - but then again, the number is lit and that is all I need.... and I know where those letters are....

On select handset models, the keypad back-light operation is light sensitive. There is a light sensor located underneath the bumper next to the <*> key that acts as a switch to turn the keypad lights on. When in an area of adequate light, the keypad will not illuminate to help conserve battery power. When in an area of low light, the sensors will allow for the keypad to illuminate within a few moments of the flip being opened or a key being pressed. This is a part of the phone's design, and cannot be disabled. This function can be demonstrated by placing your hand over the bumper, *, 7, 4, and 1 keys, then pressing any uncovered button several times. This should cause the keypad lights to illuminate regardless of the amount of ambient light.
