New Sharp Tm200!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: wilsont

I don't know if you ppl know already but Sharp just released a new phone called the TM200. Its got 2 megapixel camera, mp3, bluetooth, short movie. Its pretty much similar to the GX-30 except for the camera pixel. Here is the website but it is in chinese. Cheers

http://www.ringhk.com/sharp/sharptm200.html

Posted by: strider420

Wow. Super cool! And it's definitely headed to T-mobile from the looks of the T-Mo branding and the TM-200 model number.

Posted by: ajamils

Looks very good but it has a CMOS camera....so it would be interesting to see how it compares with the CCD camera of GX-32

Posted by: MediaGuru

Nar, the specification is wrong: It's a CCD camera, 2 megapixel autofocus.

Posted by: ajamils

So it that a GSM version of 902 cuz it does almost everything that 902 will do.

Is anyone selling this phone yet ?? where can i get more info (in english) about it ?

Posted by: startroops

Looks good, hopefully it doesn't have to 400k restriction on playing movies....

and it would be awesome if it's a quad band like the 32.

i dont believe this is the case as someone said that its a cmos camera

Posted by: MediaGuru

No, it's not the GSM version of the 902. Different style, different operator. It does have a CCD camera sensor though, the linked web site is wrong.

Posted by: braindead5400

I'm not a fan of the large circle on the front

Posted by: MediaGuru

Yeah, I know what you mean, there's not gonna be any confusion over whether your phone has a camera in it or not It looks like you could fit a telephoto lens to the front! Hmm, maybe you can...

Posted by: hocky

According to the chinese webbie, it still does not suport mp3 ringtones..... That's sad to hear. But the website also suggests that information abt the TM200 is limited and most of the info are just speculations. I hope that there will be changes such as mp3 ringtones.

Posted by: strider420

from what I read it does support MP3 files.

Posted by: hocky

being able to play mp3 files and supporting mp3 ringtones are two different things. Just take a look at the gx-32, that's a good example.

Also just found a PDF here:

It's in German but looks interesting. And yes, it does have a CCD camera.

They don't have them in stock yet. Does anyone know any other place (who can ship to USA) ?

Posted by: Hjorten

Anybody who knows if it has Active flip??

With that and MP3 ringtones and unrestricted Bluetooth, Sharp is finally getting there.

Posted by: MediaGuru

I got sent this picture of the backlit keys, really cool blue, red and green lights I think:

My English contact told me that the phone doesn't have active flip and for Bluetooth is has DUN, headset/carkit and the PCLink software but not object exchange. Dunno why they missed that off, MMS revenue objections?

I also learnt about the mystery key just above the 3 key. Apparently this is a generic Zoom Key. When the zoom icon pops up (looks alike a small A becoming a big A) on the screen you can push the key and the content on the screen will "zoom". According to my friend this applies not just to fonts on the screen but also graphics, like thumbnails and also - my personal wish list item - photos take with the camera. You can zoom again and again into a picture you've just taken and check out the detail.

He also said that the music player works well and supports not just MP3s but AAC's too including music ripped with iTunes (.m4a files). Apparently, T-Mobile Germany have some kind of music download service "t-music" ? - Can anyone comment on that? I'd imaging it'd take a while to download songs but I'd be interested to try it out. Maybe it can download them in the background or while the flip is closed or something (I'm just guessing).

Actually I just had a look at Phonescoop and they have a picture of the phone with the music player on it here. Hmm, it's got speakerphone too, nice.

I hope T-Mobile US starts to sell this soon - just put in active flip.

Would you happen to know if the menu icons like on GX32, or kind of messed up by TMobile?

Maybe they are like on TM150? And how are they?

Also, it's supposed to have voice memo that can record conversations (unlike GX-3x)?

Can you operate the phone while having the MP3 player running in the background (i.e. send sms's and stuff)?

Posted by: MediaGuru

Hey Hjorten,

I haven't got the phone yet (I'm in the US) but I hope to get one on loan really soon so I can't answer the detailed usage questions yet but I do know the menu looks very similar to the TM150 but with the addition of the AAC/MP3 player.

I guess in the begining of MediaGuru's post "My English contact...." means he/she has a friend in UK. That's maybe how he/she grabed those detailed information. But he/she didn't purchase/have the phone here in US yet.

Posted by: MediaGuru

Yeah, that's right. But I wonder what T-Mobile here in the US would say if you asked them for one... maybe they can get it. Maybe we should start a petition to get all of Sharp's phones in the US - I personally would like to see the Sharp/Xera GZ200 here as well as the TM200.

Posted by: MediaGuru

Hmm, the keypad picture's off the server for some reason. Here's another one instead:

Posted by: PDXMatt

Still no illumination for the soft keys. Seems odd.

Man, you just earned yourself a bear.. or two..

Yeah, those Tmobile menus ain't that cool (but not as terrible bad as the Vodafone either!), but I guess you can live with that due to the rest of the fantastic features...
I reckon I just got spoiled by GX32 that has really nice menu icons.. that's all..

Will be interesting to see who'll get it first of us two.. Last man in is a loser.

Is TM200 support MP3 Ringtones?

Yup..

Calendar and 'bluetooth are improved too.

Posted by: dave_100

can you view pictures as a slideshow?

also is the screen on par with the gx30?

Posted by: NEFFETS

Hi all!
I have the TM200 from T-Mobile...
It's really cool, but some things are bad:
- no MP3 ringtones
- no full bluetooth object exchange... only with the sharp PC software, but this isn't yet available for the TM200 at the moment...
- no videos over 300kb can be played

Posted by: dave_100

awesome! where did you get it from please?

also, does it have a slideshow function, so that you can view pics one after the other not opening them individually?

if you get a chance, some sample pics would be awesome.

how does the screen compare to the gx30?

any response would be great, im looking forward to this phone. A LOT

Posted by: NEFFETS

I'm from Germany and since last week the TM200 is here available at T-Mobile...
At the moment I'm waiting for my SD-Card, which I orderd this week, so I can take some pics with the phne. The intern memory is only 5MB...
Well, I hope I can find an alternate PC-software to transfer data via bluetooth, becaus as I already said is the original sharp Handset-Manager not yet available for the TM200.
Have you any ideas which software I can try? I tried the Handset manager of the GX30, but it didn't work...

Okay some things about my expierience about the phone:
- the display: wow really cool ... sharp and bright
- the menu: it's okay but T-Mobile brandet with T-mobile colors
- the keypad: really good e.g. for writing sms
- battery life: hm I think short: max 3 days (without listening often to music)...

Posted by: dave_100

thanks for your thoughts. can you tell me if you can view photos as a slideshow?

Hey NEFFETS, I'll appreciate it if u can answer the following questions.

1) How is the mp3 player ?? Is it any better than Gx32 ? Is there a playlist function ?
2) How it the sound quality ?
3) How is the video capture ?
4) Does it have the feature of connecting to the TV to view pics and video ?
5) How is the picture quality ? (Can u please post pics that u have taken from the phone)

Thanks

Posted by: NEFFETS

I can't compare the TM200 to the gx xy, because I only have the TM200...

1) yes there is a playlist funktion
2) good (in my opinion)
3) not tested yet...
4) I don't know
5) the best I've ever seen taken with a cellphone! ... pics are coming soon...

here is some information about the phone:

how is the 902 better and will that be able to be used in the us?

i know you can buy the tm200 unlocked for use in US, but is that only on tmob? not cingular?

the tm200 really seems amazing and to have every feature i would want. It seems that the reviews produce only a few minor downfalls or limitations to using it in the us.

I just worry that tmob is prob the worst carrier in the us. Is this phone really worht switching to tmob and dropping either sprint or verizon. id ont need 2 cdma carriers so it would be good to get a gsm one instead and have 1 of each.

i was thinking cingular because they are the biggest and for the mpx220 and/or the razr v3 and the new moto Mpx will prob be fore cingular too but now with the sharp tm200 it seems maybe worth it to buy it online unlocked and switch to tmob

Posted by: bronco

the sharp 902 is 2x optical zoom as well. and it has been unlocked. its dual mode so its WCDMA/GSM so it can be used .

T-Mo is really good if you are in a metro area. Best values for the bucks....and superb customer service. Sprint, on another hand, is the worest cell phone company in the country period.

Both Cingular and Sprint have terriable customer service and thats the reason I am on T-Mo rite now.

With the unlocked TM200, you can use it on both Cingular or T-Mo, however you will loose the 850Mhz band of Cingular. Thye phone is tr-band and has no 850mhz. Since T-Mo is full 1900mhz, you are probably better on T-Mo anyway reception wise.

Yep, its backwards compatible so itll work with 3g sim cards and GSM sim cards. not CDMA.

Well, I might be wrong, but "tm"200 is design for TMobile only. I guess you will only get tm200 in some Europe countries have TMobile service and probably USA later. Like TM150 etc., I don't think this phone will be distributed to say, Aisa.

Posted by: bronco

mmm...well i jus thought that there might be a version for the rest of us cause we have not got a upgrade of teh gx32. the 902 isnt for us anyway. the tm150 was the answer to the gx32 so the tm200 is now for you guys and i want the asian version

Posted by: dave_100

wil the tm 200 come out in the UK?

Posted by: bronco

ill trade anyone a p900(mint) with 2x 128mb memory stick duos and the standard packaging with tons of software for a tm200

anyone?

Posted by: cnwk64

Where is TM200's camera? I have not seen one from Internet yet. Someone who already have it, can you please post a pic?

Posted by: bronco

how can you miss the HUGE camera like ring on the front of the phone?

Posted by: cnwk64

Sorry, I mean the pictures produced from those HUGE camera.

Posted by: bronco

lol. fair enough

Posted by: Avenger

I took a "few" pics of the phone itself here: http://koti.phnet.fi/pirhje/gallery/gallery.php

I'm going to post camera shots later on when I get my SD memory card.

Posted by: Hjorten

Heya,

a few questions:

1) does it have speakerphone?

2) Active flip?

3) MP3 ringing tones?

4) Can MP3 player be minimized during play, so you can continue using the phone for other purposes.. and if so, does it lag if you do that?

5) can you easily unscrew the antenna?

Posted by: MediaGuru

1) Yes
2) No - Same as GX30
3) No - SMAF - same as GX30
4) No - It's like the GX30 player
5) No - no need IMO

Posted by: cnwk64

what languages does this phone (TM200) comes with? I hope it can read some of the SMS from my Japanese friends.

Posted by: MediaGuru

It's got something like 11 languages on it, but they are European. If you want to read Japanese on a phone then I think the SH902 can do it because I think it has the Japanese fonts in it. Also, as you are in Hawaii, you might want to check out the T-Mobile Sidekick II which has unicode and Japanese font support. You can read Japanese web sites on it easily and email too but I'm not sure if that extends to SMS (I never knew that Japanese phones can send Japanese-encoded SMS internationally). The only thing you can't do is enter in Japanese into the Sidekick.

what carrier uses 3g sim cards in america though? i thought it was just cdma and gsm.

I understand there is a correlation between 3g and EV-DO and with VZW launching it and sprint to follow is there any chance of using the TM-200 wiht 3g sim card on those carriers?

This is off topic so I won't say any more in this thread but I bought a European (Danish?) one off the Internet and I have used it on T-Mobile here in the US. The reception is sketchy, it's much wider than you'd expect to hold, the buttons on the flip are awkward to press, there's a bug in the Billiard game that can hang the game every break, the IM client doesn't work (because it's a Euro version I suppose), the external display goes black when the backlight goes off, the Bluetooth OBEX is difficult to use and the main screen makes my eyes go funny due to the tiny viewing angle (you get a different view in each eye even in normal use). So, I've got it and it draws stares when I use it but it's mediocre IMO. Best thing it's got is being thin, and the keypad illumination is fantastic - like a Star Trek communicator.

Sprint and Verizon do not utilize sim cards so no. Not to mention they also use CDMA and not GSM. Also, the TM200 doesn't support any 3g services that I know of

WElectronics.com is selling the TM200 but for $699! I've no idea if they are reputable or not but they're based in Chicago. I think someone was asking how to get the TM200 in the US.

Any1 knows if this phone & Sharp V902support Mp3 Ringtons?

Thanks

Posted by: dave_100

anyone else with the phone? can you post your views?

Posted by: NEFFETS

No MP3-ringtone support at the moment. I'm sure the hardware would support it, but the problem is the branded T-Mobile Software I think.
So also the video size is reduced to 300kb...
any ideas how to unlock all these stupid brandings?

thanks for the pics. they are ok quality,

would you answer me a few q's please?

how is the refresh rate of the tm200? does it snap pics quickly or is there a large shutter lag?

can you confirm that there is a slideshow function on the phone for photos? i have only heard it from one person.

what resolution were those pics taken at?

how is the screen quality compared to, say the gx30?

thanks for your time

Posted by: johnh_21

The screen quality is just as good as the TM150 or the Gx 30.
There is no slide show for the pics just a standard grid.
If you look at the bottom of the pics taken from the Tm 200 you will see the resolution. The phone is kinda like the Samsung D500 what it does is auto focuses the pic before taken. Its like a second and half delay. I live in SF so i am going to take some outdoor pics for you guys.

I have to agree that the screen quality is gorgeous, i feel bad i returned the phone but it was for a good reason.

Everytime the other party will talk while i had the TM200 on speakerphone they would hear " echoing " of themselves. Try it on yours and tell me if they hear it. Maybe is network related i dunno.

P.S. Call someone and when they pick up put your TM200 on speaker phone and have them talk and find out if they hear themselves echoing, good luck.

Where are you located anyways?

Posted by: johnh_21

Actually I just called my girlfriend and she says she hears no echos. Maybe just a bad unit. This is one of my favorite all around phones.

someone said there was a 'next photo' button, which allowed you to flick to the next photo with one button press. is this not the case?

please answer this is vital to my buying decision.

also what do you mean by grid?

if there is no slideshow, how long does it take to load a 2mp photos?

also thanks for all the cool photos being posted.

Posted by: MediaGuru

Yes, you just push the volume up or down key (on the side of the phone) to see the next or previous photo.
Also when you look at the thumbnails of the photos you can use the "a->A" key to cycle through different sizes, Small, Medium and Large.

www.welectronics.com and their 'in person store' seems cool but for in person shopping i go to HIFI at Western & Devon in Chicago, they know me there and since I sell phones myself, and direct customers that need unlocked phones to them, they give me good prices!!!!!!!!!!!! i couldn't believe the price i paid for my 6230. the price they charge people off the street now is still more than I paid and this was back in May/June 2004. I'll have to call them for the Sharp TM200. Ah, and yea HiFi only wheels and deals with cold hard cash. no refunds or exchanges either.

on another note....how loud are the ringtones on the tm200 and......can you set alerts/alarms to remind you of CALENDAR events, or is this still a no like the other tm150?

....any simlar phones to the tm200 out there or coming soon?

Thanks.

if so, have you any idea on a release date for the tm200 in the uk?

I think the ringtones are loud enough. I'm using a tone that I have converted myself, and that's very loud because you can make it loud when converting.

Unfortunately you can't set alerts to calendar events. Does anybody know a good java 'reminder' application?

great photos, i am impressed. any more of in low light? how does the camera perform in low light

Posted by: tmojay

i dont have any info on TMo UK just TMo USA.....so no release info on TM150 with UK and none planned for USA right now although the TM150's price has been completely dropped down quite low in the states meaning they're probably trying to get rid of it.

(gripes to self: WHY are there no alerts to set in the calendar? That really makes me mad because if I were to buy this phone I would be getting rid of my PDA too. . . .I dont use my pda enough to carry around a phone and a pda but I do use the calendar/reminder feature for birthdays and bills and things.)

I guess I'll wait for the TM300 lol

Actually i tried 2 units, call it bad luck huh? The guy was nice enough to let me try another brandnew unit and indeed the problem persisted.

Does anybody know something about a firmware-update?
I want to unlock these 300kb-video-lock...
I want to use mp3-ringtones...
any informations from sharp or t-mobile?

That'll never happen because those are not "locked features" waiting to be unlocked those are just part of the phone design. Future phones from Sharp will have unlimited plackback (the 902 already has) and MP3/AAC ringtones, just not the TM200.

No.. these features are locked by the branded T-Mobile Software... I still hope that there will be firmwareupdate soon.
