SMT5600 and Cingular

Who wants to place bets as to when the SMT5600 is offered by Cingular?

Especially with the problems the MPx220 has been having.

I'm going to go with Feb '05 as a release date for the Cingular version of the device.

The more i'm hearing from various forums, the less likely i think it is that Cingular will ever release the 5600.

I went ahead and unlocked a new AT&T 5600, set up the internet settings, and its working great w/ my cingular sim. The only two issues it has (which really arent issues), is the mMode branding and when im on a Cingular tower is shows '310410', but of which are minor and effect nothing. Im happy.

When I redesigned the homescreen using the ruttensoft designer, I just removed the carrier part so that I do not see that 310410 - if there is service, then I am not charged roaming, so that made that one easy.

If you've got a registry editor on your phone, try adding the following to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Microsoft
RIL
OperatorNames

Insert a new String Value there. For the Value name, input '310410', for the Value data, try 'Cingular'. Make sure the Value type is a REG_SZ.

Exit the reg editor, reboot the phone and see if that makes a difference.

I am fairly confident they will release the phone.

I certainly hope so. The MPX 220 is the best phone feature wise I have had, if only they would fix all the bugs in it.

JiveDonkey,

Do you have MMS working on Cingular for the SMT5600? So far it says it sends but the message isn't received by the other party. It never receives MMS messages either (no error, just nada happens).

It might be a glitch with my 3 day old account, though I've had Cingular check and they say all is good. My MPx220 configed out of the box for Cingular MMS doesn't work either.

I've been with Cingular since last May using a Sony Ericsson T637 up until last week. I gave up on MMS after a couple weeks of tying to get it to work. I've read it's pretty unstable, but that's just my own experience. Good luck.

p.s. I haven't tried it yet on my unlockd SMT5600

From my experiences Nskgti23 has been very accurate with his "assumptions". Nskgti23...if you were to "assume" Cingular would be picking up the phone what date would you "assume"?

Well I was just looking through Engadget's website when I came across a little piece from today on the 5600. Apparently they called Cingular's media relations office to get the scoop on what was going on with the phone and the guy said "Cingular was testing the phone on their network and would be reintroducing it soon, but how soon, he couldn’t say."

Sorry, No Dates....

from todays RCR Wireless News:

Cingular works to certify Audiovox smart phone for its network
By Mike Dano
Nov 24, 2004
Cingular Wireless L.L.C. is testing Audiovox's Windows Mobile smart phone for use on its network, a move indicative of the complications surrounding the carrier's combination with AT&T Wireless Services Inc. AT&T Wireless sold the Audiovox smart phone before the merger.
Since its acquisition of AT&T Wireless, Cingular has been working to assimilate AT&T Wireless' phone line-up. The carrier said it is considering adding AT&T Wireless' Audiovox STM 5600 smart phone to its own line of phones. The phone is still available through Cingular retail outlets that were previously AT&T Wireless stores, as well as through Internet retailers and some business-to-business outlets.

There are NO complications surrounding the combination of networks or the certification of the SMT5600... They have to certify the device just as AWE did. These people are fing stupid...

Quit posting these STUPID articles everyone. THE DEVICE IS IN TESTING... ENOUGH SAID.....

wow! which people exactly are f-ing stupid??

I wasn't trying to suggest that there are complications - just posting a public news clip.

you started this thread asking for bets on when Cingular would offer the phone. my posts intention was to simply strengthen your point that they will. relax....

and if you're an insider (and know the dates), don't antagonize people with release dates by starting a thread like this. what where you trying to accomplish by starting this thread i wonder..? i'm guessing it was so that you can show off a bit (with your ultimate knowledge). that to me is pretty STUPID...

anyway, RCR and Mike Dano are reliable sources and have contacts within Cingular/AWE which are most likely much higher up than you are.

happy thanksgiving to you and everyone else.

I started this thread to drum up some discussion about the SMT5600. YES I knew that Cingular is testing this device. NO I do not have dates as to it's release, because it hasn't finished certification. No need to show off on my end, I will get the ROM for my SMT5600 when it is ready. I could care less when the phone is released.

My point is that everyone is posting these quotes from other sites that have minimal inside knowledge. As for the guys at RCR and all the other sites, I'm sure they have "good" contacts, but the majority of those sites last week were saying the SMT5600 was dead. At the same time, I was posting the device was going into certification.

As for their contacts being higher up, I've had access to the PDA2k, MPx220 and a number of other devices for months. I don't think their contacts are any higher than mine. In January '04 the Sidekick II(A 850 version) was sitting on one of my contacts desks. A few months later a XDA III was on the desk next to him with one of my other contacts.

I am just tired article after article being posted about how the phone is dead, then a week later saying "You've heard it first, the phone is currently being tested and will be rereleased asap..."

Time to move on... I have better things to do, like finish getting drunk...
