Carrier WAP only no GPRS yet can view normal sites?

My mobile service provides gives me free WAP only access.

This means I can use the built in browser on my SE P800 without being charged.

However, I can't collect emails because the service is WAP only.

Now, what I don't understand is that I can browse normal sites using the built in browser, as well as WAP sites. BUT I CAN'T DO THIS USING OPERA?

If the sites I'm looking at are TCP/IP and normal http how is the data getting to and from my phone other if only WAP is allowed because WAP has it's own protocol called WTP (UDP based not TCP)?

Finally, if I can view normal websites can I therefore connect to anything that's on port 80 possibly? What can I use to test these things with? Is there something like nmap for my P800?

You can't get your email because your provider blocks certain ports. Download Opera and you'll be able to view regular websites. TCP/IP is just a transfer protocol and has nothing to do with a website.

Have tried Opera.

- Opera can't view websites
- In-built browser can

Wierd?

although it seems you are not in the U.S., i think i am having a similar issue as you.

but.. i've always been able to view regular websites and wap sites using Opera. Just recently it stopped working for me. like you i am still able to do the same using the P800's built-in browser.

anyone????

yea i have the same problem here. i was able to use my opera and all other programs using the tzones i got. but now nothing works except my built in browsers to tzones and my email. my opera stopped working, aim stopped, and my world pro also. i dont know wat's going on here.

i was readin up at the T-mobile forum and i think it's pretty much due to port 80 being closed.

i may be wrong but i was reading that aim also uses the same port but i am still able to use agile messenger (aim) on my p800.

oh well, i dont really browse much on my phone anyway. but i just moved over the weekend and was without cable internet for a couple of days and that's when i tried using my p800 to connect via the laptop and discovered it no longer works.

why are they closing ports. im paying them for this. those bastards

They want us to pay more, only way to get all those things back is to go with $19.99 internet plans.

i read somewhere that even those people with the 19.99 plan they had issues reading html sites

guys just set up a proxy and it will work like a charm http://www.alext.info/proxy.htm

All you gotta do is follow the simple instructions and download the software. Only downside is your computer has to be on. But it will make opera work and any other software that allows Proxies to be used.

As to why Agile Messenger works still since port 80 has been closed, it seems like Agile Messenger is smart enough to have their own proxy which you connect to so you might connecting on a port thats open such as 25 and then it gets switched over to whatever port AIM uses. Basically you are getting a hitchike using the Agile Messenger servers for free. Tmobile cant block out proxies no matter what they do so this is a proven method. Ive done this configuration on two different networks and both work like a charm good luck everyone!

The only problem is that some of the nicer features of AgileMessenger no longer work, like sending images or the push-to-talk functionality.

Hopefully, Agile will incorporate the ability to use a proxy so that we can all enjoy these features once more.

I am using P900 and I have T Zone service. I still can browse all the websites. I mean all wap and html. No problem at all using built in browser. Now I installed the opera software and tried to browse the internet and can't. It said connected but can't go to any websites. So I tried with the built in browser and it works. I don't know what's wrong with the opera. I put my phone on the sync station and browse the net and everythings good. Just can't browse using the GPRS.

I have Basic T-zone and can use both internal browser and Opera. To use Opera you must set "proxy". Go into Opera>Edit>Preferences>click on right arrow till you get to Proxy tab. Click "Proxy Enable" box
Server name box put in 216.155.165.50
Port number box put in 8080
You should now be able to surf with Opera with WAP only on T-mobile.
