Pxxx Series - Appalling Data Transfer Capalities? What do you think?

Well folks, I am in a rage.

Been trying to transfer some simple stuff from my P800 to the P910i. And it has been a ×××× nightmare.

On a so called business phone this should be simple.

All I am after is the ability to copy the following items to my Memory Stick on the P800 and then to upload it in the P910i and for the uploaded stuff to go back into the appropriate directories. Furthermore there should be a readily available way of storing data on the MS if you wish. The items that to my mind should be easy to transfer are:

SMS/Text Messages
MMS
Audio recordings (which currently only record to internal memory!!!)
Contacts (including pictures and categories)
Calendar/To Do/Task entries
Jotter notes

I am so mad at present that I have vowed that my next SE (if I buy the next one) will be the last unless SE sort this cr*p out. It's supposed to be a business tool, so backing or transferring the data I have just listed should be an easy 10 minute process, not a million years nightmare. A business tool should increase your productivity and NOT make your life a misery.

You only have to look these two threads to see the long winded cr*p one has to go through just to do something that should be quite simple ( http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtop...p=148397#148397 and http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtop...=asc&highlight=)

No disrespect is intended, but the software solutions I have seen to overcome some, and only some of these problems, are quite frankly no good. I mean, if I have sent a multimedia message (i.e. MMS) why on earth do I want to back it up in a text only format?!! That's nonsense. Then there are the programs that enable you to store your SMS elsewhere but again only in plain text. It's a bit like having a document in your filing cabinet that you want to duplicate and finding out that the only way to copy it is to have the whole format changed entirely or for only part of the information to be visible - no one would tolerate such nonsense. No, if I save an MMS I want the back up copy to be readable EXACTLY as it was in the original and that goes for my Contacts, Jotter notes etc.

And I EXPECT the solution to be on the phone out of the box. I don't exact to have to buy a million and one different apps just to enable a simple task. After all, I don't pay Microsoft an extra sum to be able to copy files from my PC to a disk!!!

I am sure my friend who is using a Windows based smartphone doesn't have this nonsense problem. In fact he tells me that his XDA has autosave, whereby his data is automatically backed up to his data card.

I have steadfastly avoided buying a Microsoft Windows Smartphone machine but the way things look I could end up leaving the Symbian family.

What do you folks think?

I think we need to let them know that there is a massive weakness in their machine. How? By entering your vote in the Poll on this thread.

Best Wishes all

.

I can't vouch for the P800 as I've never owned one.. however, I migrated from the P900 to the P910i and it wasn't too bad. I asked on a thread and got a relatively simple answer... you can see this thread-> Best Way to Migrate Data/Programs/Settings from old P900 to new P910i?

But to summarize, for the P900, you can save the audio recordings to the MS.
Contacts, Calendar/To Do/Tasks, & Jotter notes sync with Outlook via the PC Suite. So that's a quick and easy, once you get your sync settings right.

the SMS & MMS were the tough ones, but I found some 3rd party programs that do well enough... (I keep my SMS's due to sentimental content. ) For a simple list check this thread->Which program to backup SMS msgs? Also,I've noted that full backup of the phone will preserve any SMS's that are on the phone at the time of back-up. I realize it doesn't help with data migration from your P800 to the P910i, but once you are done with the painful task.. you should be relieved to hear that all you need to do is make backups via PC Suite.

All in all.. I think improvements/streamlining in data management dept. would be nice.. but I don't think I would boycott SE smartphones over its current state right now. ALL new technology/gizmos/contraptions will have an initial learning curve.. (you know like how to stop the VCR from blinking 12:00)..and once you get it up and running.. I'm sure you'll be less bugged out!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the post

But the solutions pointed to in your post aren't that great.

And even the options you aluded to aren't up to much. For example, what if I don't own a copy of Outlook - I mean for God's Sake!! why does every software house think you must own a copy of Microsoft's rubbish.

Really, Sony Ericsson need to get their house in order as far as backing up goes when they produce their next phone.

By the way, if you head over to My-Symbian and click on my profile you will see two threads in which I took part where the backup solutions offered are far more comprehensive (but still fiddly and time consuming).

Anyway, thanks for your input.

Enyoy your phone
