BB dumps MPX220?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

With rebate and 1 yr commitment it sells for $49. Yesterday it would have set you back $300.

It appears they are dumping the phones they have in inventory, just to get rid of them.

Is it possible that after these are gone, the MPX is gone as well?

Robert

It appears to be for brand new activations and not for existing customers who are eligibile to upgrade. I could be totally wrong.... If I am wrong, then all the more reason to go in tomorrow and get one.

OK i was wrong on my last post, it IS $50, (in case you didnt read it, i'm a bby employee) and no, we're not getting rid of it, there's just a $300 MAIL IN rebate and yes it's only for new activations, but you COULD cancel the new service like 1 minutes after activation and pay the fees and still come out a lot of $ ahead

what kind of penatly is there to cancelling a 1 year commitment?

Cingular's early termination fee is $240.

My vote is for "Black Friday Sale"...

well this is just great...im on thanksgiving trip and my receipt is at home..800 miles away. Do you think bestbuy can fix me a rebate receipt for the $300 rebate with just the phone? Pull up the info from their computer or something? thanks p.s. the phone is still less than 30 days old.

FWIW, last time I called BB and was put on hold, I heard an automated message that said something like "Lost your receipt? No problem -- we can pull it up on our computers for you", so ... maybe you're in luck.

Were you a new Cingular subscriber when you bought the phone a few weeks ago?

I'm not buying until the 1.30 or 1.003 (since it keeps getting posted both ways) is out and if BB has it at those levels then sure and heck I will sign up.

when i bought it i added a 1 year contract on a new family talk line added to my other family lines. Guess ill give it a try tommorrow and see what happens ... thanks

I carried mine back and got a v551 and it is one of the best phones I have had. Personally knowing what I know now about it I would not gove .50 cent for it.

Sorry to hear that. The MPX220 isnt for everyone I guess. Personally, the V551 looks like a toy phone to me with the blue rubber trim.

IIRC the cancel fee is not $240, but $10/month lef on your contract, you still come out with a phone for 1/2 price.

and the whole look up your receipt is iffy, if you paid credit or check then yah, if cash, then MAYBE if you know the day, and register you checked out on.

and they probably cannot do it over the phone, but you do have 30 whole days to bring it in to get that rebate, they basically return the phone and re-sell it to you, so the new phone is good for another thirty days (though the price probably isnt guaranteed for another 30)

The ETF in most parts of the country is $240 (prorated over remaining contract term).

If you buy the phone to get the rebate, but have intentions of cancelling the contract, realize that you'll also pay an activation fee and a minimum of one month of service.

But, consider this..

If you buy the phone outright with no contract, it will cost $500 ($350 plus a $150 up-charge)

If you get the rebate and then cancel after a month, you'll pay:
$350 for the phone
$36 activation
$30 minimum charge for a month
$220 ETF (assume 11 months left on a 1 year contract)
The above totals $636 - after rebate you're down to $336.

If you have to keep your service on longer to make sure your rebates are fully processed, add $10 of cost per month to your "overall cost" - since in any extra month, you'll pay $30 of service charges, but save $20 of ETF.

So, I'd use $336 as the "comparisson" price.

The alternative I can think of is to buy the phone with a one year contract, and then (right after leaving the store) migrate the line to a second line on a family account... then just ride out the contract for the year.

By doing that, you'll pay $350 phone + $36 activation + $120 charges (over the course of a year) = $506 - less $300 rebate = $206

The whole point of this is to remind that $50 isn't really $50 - but it is still a better deal than $500!

BB stores had an additional $25 rebate today too. And they let me add another mpx220 as a family line phone. Very nice. :-)

Thanks,
mike

When I bought my MPX220 on day 2 of its BB launch I got out without signing my contract. When I returned two days late to return it and cancel my contract I read the seperate sheet BB has you sign. Something about if you cancel the service before 4 months is up they charge $400 termination feel. So add that onto you $636 fee.

I am waiting for the FW 1.3 before I do anything. BB is not getting my money on this one.

look at the details* because if it's a fee best buy charges, you can contest it and usually win, because you signed a contract for service with cingular, not bby, at least thats what i've seen customers do in my store with cell-one phones.

or the other option- $120 to keep the darn thing 4 months.... :P

Seperate sheet?? All i signed was the cingular contract and the best buy cell phone/service receipt and it mentions nothing about any fee to cancel the contract just states the return policy.

so say i bought the phone on Oct 22nd for $500 but i just exchanged it for the .342 firmware on Nov 16th. Is it still possible for me to return the phone and get my $500 back and then buy it for $350 since its within 30 days of the 16th?

Posted by: jhebert

sort of, depending on the local store policies regarding cell phones, it changes from carrier to carrier and store to store, but in another context, say you buy a computer saturday, well sunday there's rebates out for it, you bring your receipt in, they basically return it and resell it to you and you get the rebates, so i dont see why it wouldnt work the same for cell phones
