using 8910 as modem for laptop

I have the Audiovox 8910 and Verizon as my carrier. I want to set up my phone as a modem for my Dell laptop which is running Windows XP. I have got the cable from radio shack and by reading on this forum I've managed to get my computer to recognize my phone and I have set it up as a new modem option. I used QNC as my name and password and #777 as the number. When I hit connet this happens:

Windows comes up that says opening port.
Next a window that says Error Connecting to Phone and in the window it says Error 692: There was hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device)

I click on more info and what is says is that the modem is turned off, malfunctioning, or is not securely connected to your computer.

Any suggestions????????

Here is some more info that might help.

Under Phone & Modem Options I can right click on my phone modem and check the user log. This is what it displays:

you need the verizon quicklink mobile software. its free. you can find it at the following link http://www.randomite.com/files/VerizonWireless/
and also this one http://www.randomite.com/files/Veri...And_Venturi.zip
its the verizon dialer.
its the one labled QLMobile.exe

pretty easy setup and all you have to do when you get it installed is pretty much plug in your phone and hit connect.

there is a help file with the software. so you should be good.

I installed the Verizon Wireless Mobile Office and still it didn't work. While setting up the program says to chose a connection. I chose the USB port.

Then It says to make sure the phone is connected and turned on. It was already on.

I hit next and is says searching for wireless device. It checks COM1 then COM6 (COM6 is where my phone is connected) then it stops and says

"a wireless device was not found. Make sure the cable is securely plugged into your wireless phone and your coputer. Also check to make sure the power to your wireless device is on and close all other applications that may be useing the serial port such as HotSync or ActiveSync."

I assume the programs aren't running but I don't really know how to check.
